Our fab photographer Jason Rosewarne caught the Lachy Doley band in action on Friday July 29 at Ziggy Pops in St.Kilda. The core band included Lachy on Hammond organ, whammy clavinet and vocals, Jackie Barnes on Drums and backing vocals, with Tim Curnick on bass. As a special treat, Lachy was also joined by Audrey Powne on trumpet and vocals, as well as Michael Paynter stepping up to the mic for a sing. Lachy Doley and band in full flight is an extraordinary sensory experience. Over two exciting sets, Lachy performed a bunch of energetic originals and threw in a cover of the Prince/Sinead O’Connor track Nothing Compares To You, which he included into his set for the Big Red Bash “because all the other bands on the bill had hit songs and I needed one too,” he joked. Frankly My Dear I Don’t Give A Damn featured a glorious bass solo from Tim Curnick on his well-travelled Fender Jazz Bass, while Only Cure For The Blues is The Blues showcased Audrey Powne on trumpet. Michael Paynter joined Lachy for the classic Gimme Some Lovin’ before everyone hit the stage to finish off in fine style with the Ray Charles version of I Can see Clearly Now. Check out Jason’s photos from the night below.
