On the back of winning her fourth Queensland Music Award, independent artist LT has today dropped an acoustic version of her latest track ‘Mercy!’.
Reminiscent of the early 2000’s Dance, Electronic, Pop era (Sophie Ellis-Bextor meets La Roux), ‘Mercy!’ is a collaboration between LT and London-based producer JHustl3. Released in March, the track received so much support, including high rotation on Double J, that LT decided to strip it back for the die-hard fans. She says, ‘Mercy!’ is inspired by the struggles faced with being an introvert at heart, and the social anxiety that comes with that. It’s using all your strength to get yourself to the party, and then looking for an escape route as soon as you arrive. It’s about being trapped in awkward conversations and wishing you could just disappear”.
LT’s QMA-winning single ‘Act Your Age’ is a stab at ageism in the music industry. On the topic, LT says “It’s an important issue that I hope continues to be discussed… Age, gender, shoe size, or any other external factors are completely irrelevant when it comes to music.”
Speaking with LT about winning the award for ‘Act Your Age’, she says, “It means so much because it feels like I’ve been heard.” She explains that it’s easy to become a little jaded as an independent artist over 35, balancing family, work, and other commitments. LT was not expecting ‘Act Your Age’ to take the win. It came as a complete shock. She joked that she probably would have hired a make-up artist for the event if she knew she’d be getting up on stage that evening.
LT is the project of singer-songwriter Leanne Tennant. In recent years, Leanne has drifted from her country/blues/roots style to explore the world of pop. Teaming up with co-producers/writers Joel Quartermain and Edwin White, LT has a fierce new outlook on life as an independent artist.
So what’s next for the Cairns-based artist? “I’ve got a few more singles for release, an album in the works, and hopefully a tour very soon!”
