Nicole Nighthawk is back with a striking new single ‘Going Under’, an ominous, atmospheric rocker featuring a wall of fiery guitars and huge drum sounds behind Nighthawk’s passionate vocal performance.
“Going Under” was written after ending my marriage, my band, and leaving everything I knew myself to be, to start over again. This song was my grieving, an outpouring of all the emotions that hit me, pulling me under,” says Nicole of the emotions behind the song.

ABOUT NICOLE NIGHTHAWK
A soulful and emotive artist, award-winning singer-songwriter Nicole Nighthawk’s relatable and heart-felt original songs take listeners on a powerful journey with her captivating vocals and lyrics. Nicole’s passion for songwriting began early in life. While in school, she was selected as a winner in a national songwriting competition and was flown to Sydney to record her original song, ‘It’s What’s Within’ at Albert Studios. The song was included on the ‘Enriching Australia’ album with Kate Ceberano and other celebrated Australian artists. Since then, Nicole has taken to the stage to support touring artists including Bic Runga, Shawn Mullins, Australian blues legend Russell Morris, and has performed on national television as backing vocalist for Christine Anu. Her performance of the National Anthem at the Drag Racing Nationals saw Nicole receive a standing ovation from an audience of 35,000 people.
With her band Grandhour, Nicole won Best Rock Artist at the 2016 Australian Independent Music Awards with their self-recorded, self-produced album ‘Bombs & Bullets’ – all songs written by Nicole. Twelve months later, while recording the band’s sophomore album, Nicole made the hardest decision of her life and walked away from everything she had been working so hard towards. With the heartbreak of leaving her marriage to Grandhour guitarist and producer), and the anguish of breaking up a band on the rise, Nicole’s journey to her debut solo release has been paved with emotional lows, highs, feelings of loss, new love, and finding the strength within. She found solace and healing through songwriting and, little by little, started to shape the beginnings of her solo career.
Her debut as a solo artist with dark-pop single “No Tomorrow”, described by Australian Musician Magazine as “An impressive debut from a multi-talented artist.”, was a step away from her signature rock sound (with band Grandhour).
Her newest single “Going Under” is a heavy-hitting, alternative rock track that encapsulates the feeling of despair as you navigate grief and the long and often lonely road to healing.
‘“Going Under” was written after ending my marriage, my band, and leaving everything I knew myself to be, to start over again. This song was my grieving, an outpouring of all the emotions that hit me, pulling me under.’ Recording began in 2019 with producer Voya Milutinovic but was shelved for nearly 5 years due to lockdowns, moving cross-country, and the search for the right ‘sound’ to match the heavy emotion of the song. Leaving Melbourne in 2021, Nicole is now settled into a new life in Tropical North Queensland. Nicole is known for her engaging live performances at popular venues and festivals in and around Cairns where she plays an impressive mix of crowd-favourites and original songs.

Official Going Under Lyrics:
Dull skies, dim lights
numb ache inside (deaf and blind)
All the pieces are so scattered where they landed on the floor
Makes it all the harder to walk when you’re trying not to fall
So, wake me up when this finally over
Wake me up when this no longer hurts
‘Cause I can’t breathe and I keep going under
Just another lesson, mark it down as learnt
Feet first, eyes closed – let it go
Deep breath, move slow – now it’s done
All the pieces are so scattered and you’re broken to the core
But the cracks along the path are where new life can start to grow
So, wake me up when this finally over
Wake me up when this no longer hurts
‘Cause I can’t breathe and I keep going under
Just another chapter, watch it as it burns
Are we destined to hurt each other time and time again?
Down the barrel we stare helplessly watching as it ends
Wake me up when this finally over
Wake me up when this no longer hurts
‘Cause I can’t breathe and I keep going under
Just another lesson, mark it down as learnt
It’s another chapter – watch it as it burns
Just another lesson, mark it down as learnt
