RIPE HIP HOP ALL FEMALE LINEUP STANDS UP TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Ripe Hip Hop, a Melbourne-based event series founded by Katija Burcul and hip hop duo Ronks and Chooka of WAXX ONE join forces featuring an all female line-up to stand up to Domestic Violence with MISS RIPE

MISS RIPE happens Friday November 22 at the Vineyard, St. Kilda featuring Viliana, Grace Chia, Candi, Tay Tantra, Punz, with DJs Mishap, Petals808 and Ripe Cyphers.

Women in the Australian Hip Hop scene are commonly the minority when it comes to most show line-ups. Interestingly reoccurring themes of toxic relationships and troubled or violent experiences are woven throughout many of these artists music, which is something that resonates heavily within the broader community.

Artist Viliani emphasizes the importance of the event’s message: “We need to talk more openly about domestic violence, challenging harmful norms and taking action when we see toxic behaviours. The hip hop community can play a big role in spreading awareness.”

Since August 2023, RIPE Hip Hop has fostered a strong community presence through monthly events that celebrate local talent and encourage creativity. “Our goal is to create a safe, supported space for up-and-coming artists and creatives alike to connect and build the confidence to chase their dreams,” says co-founder Katija. “RIPE at the Vineyard is quickly becoming the heart and soul of Melbourne’s hip hop youth and wider music community,” venue owner Johnny shares Katija’s dedication to making RIPE a true cultural hub. The night’s line-up also includes celebrated DJs MIZHAP and PETALS808. Known for her skill with scratching and vinyl, MIZHAP has recently led Women’s Turntablism Workshops through her label Restless Records, passing on her expertise to a new generation of female DJs. PETALS808, cofounder of Harry’s Hip Hop Shop with her fiancé Jackson, has created a unique space for hip hop lovers inside a rooftop tram in Collingwood. The shop, which offers everything from streetwear and local artist merch to vinyl records, is proud to sponsor MISS RIPE and support the cause.

Artist Grace Chia, creator of Culture of Queens, reflects on her own journey within hip hop: “The scene still has a long way to go in creating safe spaces for women. There’s still so much misogyny glorified and normalised. Hip hop has helped me find my voice and process abusive relationships. Now, I’m focused on using my platform to help others going through similar challenges.”

MISS RIPE isn’t just about raising funds; it’s also about fostering local talent. Aspiring artists are invited to register for the open cypher pre-show, an opportunity to share their skills and support a meaningful cause.

We would love to see everyone turn up to support Melbourne’s unstoppable female talent. Get your ticket and join the movement on November 22nd. 100% of proceeds from the event will go directly to Friends With Dignity, a charity that focuses on supporting adults and children impacted by DV to rebuild their lives. Together, we can make a difference.
