BAKEHOUSE STUDIOS OPEN DAY
Saturday, February 22nd 10 am – 2 pm
bakehousestudios.com.au
Situated between North Richmond Train Station and Hoddle Street, Bakehouse Studios is a beloved cultural icon in Melbourne. A bustling hub of creativity, Bakehouse is an inclusive and respectful studio that offers space for rehearsal, recording, filming and showcase events. Bakehouse is inextricably linked to grassroots music activism in Melbourne, with Helen Marcou AM and Quincy McLean AM, the co-founders of Save Live Australia’s Music (SLAM), inducted into the Music Victoria hall of fame in 2022.
Always wanted to take a sneak peek behind the walls at Bakehouse? Here’s your chance. On Saturday 22nd of February 2025, Bakehouse Studios will open its doors for a special studio-wide Open Day event, running from 10am to 2pm.
With live music performances from Miss Kaninna, Kutcha Edwards & Friends, Rudely Interrupted and Magnets, the event will celebrate the success of Bakehouse’s 2024 inclusivity upgrades, including the installation of a studio elevator, ramped stage and other accessible facilities. It will also celebrate the completion of the 2024 First Nations Artist Residencies, and launch a new round of inaugural studio residencies to support artists living with disabilities, to take place throughout 2025. Proudly co-funding these endeavours, Bakehouse thanks Creative Victoria, Office for the Arts, Greater Western Water, Position Inc, Arts Access Victoria and The Push for their commitment to supporting equal opportunities in local music.
Featuring a luscious courtyard oasis, historic architectural features, and semi-permanent installations in art-filled studios, this a rare opportunity for a self-guided walkthrough of the unique inner city sanctuary.
Accompanying the gig will be local vendors with fresh banh mi & coffee, merch desks with goods by your favourite local artists, and stalls presented by community organisations.
The Bakehouse open day is free entry, with donation options & door prizes to be won.
“For many years one of our senior Songmen couldn’t access the upstairs rehearsal spaces. When I was asked to support & advocate for a new lift so that everyone had the opportunity to be in all the beautiful rehearsal rooms at Bakehouse, I was more than happy to do so. Now the lift is in, it’s time to celebrate inclusion for all.” – Uncle Kutcha Edwards
“Bakehouse Studios is creating access to a vital development and showcase space at the centre of the Australian Music scene. They have taken this significant step to ensure no one is left behind. We couldn’t be prouder to bear witness to their commitment and dedication to equity. Bakehouse shows us the true power music has in connecting us all.” – Nikki Zerella, Deputy CEO, Arts Access Victoria

SOMA ‘SAY IT’ (Single/Video/Dates)
Bold, slick and laden with modern hip hop hues, Sydney-based artist SOMA unveils her new single Say It, conjured alongside the legendary Danny Duke (Lizzo, Sampa the Great), and also accompanied by a cosmic music video ahead of the release of her debut mixtape COBRA, due out on February 21.
A sultry slice of alternative hip hop merged with futuristic soul, Say It collides SOMA’s seamless artistry alongside nods to the fearless storytelling and creativity of SZA, FKA twigs, and Outkast. Also expanding her experimental approach to music via inspiration courtesy of Björk and Missy Elliott, Soma ultimately captures edgy celestial vibes with her own unique twist in her latest masterpiece. “Say It is about an alien falling in love with a human on Earth and exploring this intense, otherworldly connection,” SOMA explains. “It’s a metaphor for feeling like you don’t belong yet finding someone who accepts and loves you unconditionally. It’s sensual, intimate, and cosmic—pushing boundaries while still remaining deeply human. The idea came from a conversation about how love transcends everything: distance, identity, and even planets. Releasing Say It feels surreal. This single represents such a bold step for me as an artist—it’s raw, emotional, and unlike anything I’ve done before. Sharing it with the world is a little terrifying, but mostly it’s empowering. It’s my way of saying, “This is who I am, take it or leave it.”
Teaming up with Danny Duke, the award-winning producer renowned for his work with Lizzo and Sampa the Great amongst others, SOMA also channelled her boundless sonic stylings into an accompanying music video for Say It, with the clip, directed by Frederick McHenry, expanding SOMA’s creative evolution as she steps into a bold new era in the lead up to the release of her mixtape, COBRA.
COBRA will arrive on February 21, alongside an accompanying 20-minute long-form film, directed by Frederick McHenry, with the visual companion set to amplify the mixtape’s raw emotional power and creative depth, while also firmly signposting SOMA as an innovative visionary in the local scene.
Say It is out now.
SOMA’s COBRA mixtape and accompanying long-form film is set for release Friday February 21 via Mandatory Music.

EMERAULD ‘In The First Place’ (Single)
Rising indie-rock artist Emerauld delivers raw emotion and unrelenting energy with the release of In The First Place. A powerful anthem about navigating life’s uncertainties and battling self-doubt, the track showcases Emerauld’s knack for creating deeply personal yet universally relatable music.
Written in the wake of graduating high school, In The First Place captures the whirlwind of emotions that come with stepping into the unknown. Through explosive instrumentation and layered soundscapes, the track magnifies the frustration and self-reflection underpinning the lyrics. From thunderous drum beats to soaring guitar riffs, every element contributes to a cathartic release of pent-up tension.
“This song is like my inner battle brought to life,” shares Emerauld. “It dives into my self-doubt and frustration and the chorus reminds me that I don’t owe anyone anything, but also reflects the exhaustion of having nothing left to give”.
IN THE FIRST PLACE – EMERAULD LISTEN
The rock version is just one side of the story. Emerauld’s acoustic rendition of In The First Place, set to be released on Feb 28th, will offer a contrasting, stripped-back perspective. REVEREND AND THE MAKERS ONE – OFF MELBOURNE SHOW
One of Britain’s most iconic bands, REVEREND AND THE MAKERS, has announced a one-off intimate show in Melbourne this April. The show will feature the full band, marking the first time they’ve performed in Australia in nearly two decades. The Sheffield indie ensemble, led by frontman Jon McClure, are also gearing up for the release of new music following the success of the 2023 Top 10 album Heatwave In The Cold North.
Never resting on their laurels and constantly striving to challenge perceptions of the band, Reverend and the Makers have become one of the enduring and great survivors of the British music scene. With a career spanning two decades Jon McClure and his collective of musicians burst onto the scene with their Top 5 Charting album, ‘The State of Things’. The album spawned the UK Top 10 Single, ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’. The five albums since have seen the band move through several incarnations, sounds, and lineups, and experience all the highs, and most of the lows, that the music industry has to offer.
Each of the albums has reached the Top 20 of the UK album charts, an impressive unbroken run of six albums. These albums have seen them cut across the creative spectrum, ranging from collective efforts to the frontman’s singular visions. Instead, The Makers is more a sobriquet, a statement of intent, a commitment and a guiding principle that has seen McClure consistently strive to build, innovate, and grow musically and artistically. The Reverend’s story is one of the great survival stories of the music industry as charisma, talent, defiance, and sheer willpower sees the band start a new chapter reenergised and raring to go. With a point to prove, with Heatwave In The Cold North, Reverend and the Makers set about the task in hand armed to the teeth with an arsenal of their biggest, best, and most accessible and ambitious songs to date.
REVEREND AND THE MAKERS will perform in Melbourne on Wednesday 16 April at The Curtin Hotel.
Tickets for this exclusive performance are on sale now.

BEHIND CRIMSON EYES ‘AN EXODUS FROM EDEN’ (final EP and farewell tour)
Legendary Melbourne 5-piece Behind Crimson Eyes have announced their final body of work and subsequent farewell tour, following the band’s decision to hang up their instruments after 20+ years in the game. The band’s final EP ‘An Exodus From Eden’ is set for release on the 4th of April, with the 2nd single from the EP ‘Burn It Down’ out as of today.
‘Burn It Down’ is a metalcore epic in every sense of the word. Seamlessly weaving between hard-hitting riffage, frontman Josh Stuart’s signature growl, and stunning uplifting vocal melodies in the chorus – ‘Burn It Down’ is a masterclass in dynamic songwriting. Lyrically, the track acts as a call to action – challenging the listener to rise up against inequality and social injustice.
“Burn It Down is a protest against discrimination, corruption, and the abuse of power. The song channels the pain and anger many feel in the fight against inequality, but also hints at the hope for systemic change. The song’s central theme is that we can rise from the ashes to build a more just and equitable future for all.
Musically, Burn It Down is a ferocious blend of Metalcore and melodic beauty, featuring the angelic vocals of Sally Chatfield from Lunacy. The track is reminiscent of the intensity and anger contained within The Bonesmen, along with the darkness of DEAD.DROP.DEAD. It serves as the best example of what to expect from our upcoming EP, An Exodus From Eden.” JOSH STUART, BEHIND CRIMSON EYES
‘Burn It Down’ is accompanied by a music video, shot by Peter John from Epik Films (The Paper Kites, Planetshakers, Morgan Evans). The clip meets the huge sound found on the track with equally grand visuals, with some seriously impressive production ensuring the band go out with a bang on all fronts.
Behind Crimson Eyes have become a staple of the Australian heavy scene over the last two decades. Forming in 2004, the band quickly found support from national radio stations – with consistent rotation spots on triple J and commercial stations across the country. Their debut album ‘A Revelation For Despair’ was released through Roadrunner Records, and hit No. 43 on the ARIA Top 50 back in 2006. In 2007, the band performed at triple J’s One Night Stand (Alongside Silverchair), and were also featured on the lineup for Pyramid Rock Festival, Bass In The Dust, Bass In The Grass Destroy Music, Homebake Festival and Trackside Festival that year. The band have also played at legendary festivals such as Taste Of Chaos, Big Day Out, Soundwave, Another World and Unified festival; and have toured with the likes of Funeral For A Friend, Bullet For My Valentine, Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Alexisonfire, Story of the Year and Senses Fail over the years.
The band will be hitting the road once more in support of their final EP, with dates in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. This will be the very last chance for fans of Behind Crimson Eyes to catch them live, so tickets are expected to sell out very quickly – head to Destroy All Lines and book now so you don’t miss out!

Fans can expect a spellbinding musical journey, filled with powerful riffs and epic choruses that awaken dreams and transport listeners into a majepic fairytale world.
Staying true to their creative process, MAJESTICA once again took full control of the production, writing, recording, and producing the album themselves. Most of the recording took place in their new creative home, Majestic Studios, while the mixing was expertly handled by Jonas Kjellgren, who previously worked on A Christmas Carol and Metal United.
Visually, Power Train is brought to life by Jan Yrlund / Darkgrove Design, whose stunning artwork invites fans to step onto the platform, hear the call of “all aboard,” and embark on an unforgettable metal journey. Chris Davidsson comments on the album release: ”Finally our new album is about to be released! It has been a long process and we are very happy with how it turned out. Can’t wait to hear what you all think about it! The album has a lot of dynamics, reminding about a train ride, it goes fast, slows down, mid tempo, full on again and so on. I think it has something for everyone, so jump on board the train and enjoy the ride! All aboard!”
Tommy Johansson continues: ”The song ’Battle Cry’ takes you back to when vikings sailed the seas in a fast, melodic and sing-along pirate metal tune.
The sound is very much inspired by Running Wild with some glorified elements from the old ReinXeed era. Set your sail and listen to our battle cry!”

PLAYLUNCH ‘Boys’ (Single/Video)
Start with sinuously soulful 70’s funk, throw in ludicrously catchy melodies and soon to be anthemic choruses, whizz together with a big walloping dollop of wry, tongue in cheek humour and top off with a liberal dusting of uniquely noughties (and naughty) Australian nostalgia and what do you get? The raucous new single ‘Boys‘, from the rapidly ascendant Melbourne band Playlunch, that’s what.
Hot on the heels of conquering last year’s BigSound with their brand of witty and glittery pop – or, in their own words, ‘Bogan Funk’ – Playlunch are ready to stake a claim on hearts worldwide with ‘Boys’, the latest missive in their arsenal of dancefloor ready disco bangers. Distilling the giddy likes of Daft Punk, Lonely Island, Bee Gees and more into one deliriously memorable 3 minute soon to be classic, Playlunch look set to cross over from best kept underground cult secret to Big Proper Pop Stars with ease in 2024.
Since their debut in April 2022, Playlunch – the passion project of Liam Bell – have exploded at a rapid rate across both the Melbourne music scene and now also Nationally (and internationally!) in 2024. Releasing their debut album in November 2023 titled Who’s Ready For A Good Time?, Playlunch have soared to new heights with viral Tik Tok videos, High Rotation Triple J play & massive Sell Out shows across the country (including a 550 person attended launch show at Fitzroy’s iconic, The Night Cat). Putting a huge focus on touring and bringing their comedic, yet serious live show to the people, the band have become a staple across the Australian Festival circuit with slots at NYE on the Hill (VIC), St Kilda Festival (VIC), Offbeat Music Festival (QLD), Good Gumnuts Festival (TAS), Party in the Paddock (TAS) & many more under their belts.

THE ELECTORATE ‘Peace Love & Kindness’ (Single)
Kicking off an exciting and busy new year, The Electorate release ‘Peace Love & Kindness’, the second single from their forthcoming 2025 album By Design, due out in May.
‘Peace Love & Kindness’ (premiered by Chimes on 2SER) is the second new single from Gadigal/Sydney trio The Electorate (Eliot Fish, Joshua Morris & Nick Kennedy), following the release of the hooky, metronomic and angular (2SER featured) single ‘Face of a Giant’ late last year.
The members of The Electorate have all been part of the Australian music scene for a number of years, with ties to Big Heavy Stuff, Knievel, The Apartments, Imperial Broads, Atticus and the Templebears. This invaluable experience has shaped their sound and informed their astute musical choices, evident on their 2020 debut album, You Don’t Have Time To Stay Lost, which received a 4.5-star review from Rolling Stone, and their upcoming new album, By Design, set to be released this May.
‘Peace Love & Kindness’ is a naive song of hope, written in the crushing wake of the failed Voice referendum, and the horrors of Gaza + Ukraine. Built on a riff that refused to go away, and nodding to the lyrics of too many other sad idealists, the song is a plea for decency and tolerance in a world that appears increasingly indifferent to both.
Produced by Wayne Connolly (Teskey Brothers/Babe Rainbow/Underground Lovers), ‘Peace Love & Kindness’ was the last song The Electorate would track for By Design. Whilst the verses had been locked in prior to the recording, the chorus took shape under Wayne’s experienced eyes and ears. As the band channelled the last of their energy, they pelted across the finishing line in a haze of frenzy, relief and joy.
Over a drum machine intro The Electorate steal and build their naive plea for peace, love and kindness. The clocklike tick of Josh’s guitar and Nick’s drums fuse effortlessly, whilst Eliot’s bass floats across the verses and frantically fuels the choruses. Over harmonies and handclaps, The Electorate yelp out in favour of a fairer, more tolerant world.
‘Peace Love & Kindness’ is out now on Bandcamp, streaming services and Amrap for our community radio friends across Australia.

BON IVER ‘Sable, fable’ (Album out April 11)
Justin Vernon turns the page and begins Bon Iver’s next chapter: the epilogue. Out 11 April on Jagjaguwar, SABLE, fABLE is the project’s first album in six years, and with it comes a love story set to lush, radiant pop music. While the record begins with the vulnerable unburdening of last fall’s three-song SABLE, EP, the triptych seamlessly gives way to a new nine-song saga in which one person becomes two, darkness turns to salmon-colored beauty, and sadness transforms to unbridled joy. Where SABLE, is a sparse and solitary reckoning with a pain that long-defined the past, fABLE looks towards a vibrant future filled with light, purpose and possibility: a partner, new memories, perhaps a family.
Ahead of its 11 April release date, Bon Iver officially enters the fABLE era this Valentine’s Day with ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love‘. The single will arrive alongside a music video shot and edited by filmmaker John Wilson, of HBO’s How To with John Wilson.
Produced by Justin Vernon and Jim-E Stack, SABLE, fABLE was primarily recorded at Vernon’s April Base in Wisconsin, after years that the studio spent laying dormant during a renovation. The conceptual genesis for the album occurred on 22.2.22, when Stack arrived at the Base with Danielle Haim. Snowed in for multiple days, Vernon and Haim’s voices intertwined on ‘If Only I Could Wait’, a duet with crucial perspective, about not having the strength to be the best version of yourself outside the glow of new love.
If SABLE, was the prologue, then fABLE is the book – but together, SABLE, fABLE is the album, and for that reason it is no fairy tale. There may be something undeniably healing about infatuation, and the intense clarity, focus, honesty and celebration it brings to these songs. ‘Everything Is Peaceful Love’ is the portrait of a man overwhelmed with happiness upon meeting the one he will fall in love with. But the shadow of SABLE, still looms, and old feelings can return, even after one has put in the work to reset and start fresh.
Like fables, each track instills a lesson, and fABLE is about the selfless rhythm required when one is enmeshed with another person or lover – a patient commitment to finding the pace for betterness, and togetherness. Gone are the evasive and dense layers of sound that guarded Justin Vernon’s voice on i,i and 22, A Million. The previous four albums were a cycle of seasons that is now complete; SABLE, fABLE is a canvas for truth laid bare.
Justin Vernon will speak more about SABLE, fABLE on 21 February, in a wide-ranging conversation with the Peabody-award winning broadcaster, National Humanities Medalist, and New York Times bestselling author, Krista Tippett, of The On Being Project. Closing out the annual On Air Fest in Brooklyn, NY, the two will sit down to discuss music, healing and other central questions. Tickets are available here, with audio of the interview streaming live via KCRW’s on-site internet radio broadcast, and later available via On Being.

DEAR SEATTLE NATIONAL AUSTRALIAN TOUR WITH HEART ATTACK MAN (US)
Fresh off the back of nabbing an ARIA #1 Australian Album and ARIA #4 Album placement for their third studio album TOY, Sydney’s Dear Seattle now announces national tour dates to celebrate the record with fans this May.
With the release of TOY, Dear Seattle achieved new heights as a band. Already solidified as one of the country’s best indie rock names, the four-piece broadened songwriting horizons and pushed themselves with the creation of this new album. A striking blend of riffs, melody and matured observations of relationships, growth and evolution, TOY captures Dear Seattle at a brilliant new creative peak.
Featuring singles ‘Evergreen’, ‘Say What You Want’ and ‘Counting Hours’, TOY landed with instant impact – achieving a whopping 50,000 streams on Spotify alone upon release day, TOY expanded their reach exponentially with this album, their first-ever Top 10 appearance in the ARIA Chart making TOY also coming in as the only Australian-made album in the ARIA Top 50 on release week.
Now set to take the album around the country in May, Dear Seattle are primed for their best shows yet, stating, “We’ve been putting in the hard yards to ensure this tour is the absolute best you’ve ever seen [from] DS. We always put in everything, but this time we wanna push the boundaries of what we’ve done in the past and make this album tour the most memorable one yet. We can’t wait to see you there!”
The Australian tour will see Dear Seattle joined by Cleveland, Ohio punk rock group, Heart Attack Man. Since 2014, the band has been consistently defining their style of music by sharp and poignant lyricism, matched with an urgent and natural sound.
In 2023, the band released their third album, Freak Of Nature, a record that highlighted the chemistry within the band and moreover, a sense of rejuvenation that has permeated throughout their process. This year, Australian fans will finally see Heart Attack Man bring it to life – the anticipation is mutual, says the band, “We’re stoked to be heading to Australia for the first time ever. Hope to see you all there!”
Also joining Dear Seattle on their latest national run will be Adelaide pop-punk duo TOWNS, and Melbourne indie-rock artist, LUCKY.
For TOWNS, their profile has continued to grow impressively since making their debut in 2018 with the track ‘Television’. Blending a love for ‘90s pop and rock, with a refreshing take on fired up songwriting and arrangements, the duo has evolved into a pure force, recently evidenced on sentimental slowdown, their debut album from 2024.
Emerging Melbourne indie force Lucky has been developing a strong local following since the release of her track ‘Never Know’ in 2024. Perfect for fans of artists including beabadoobee and Day Wave, Lucky’s love for this type of music has created excitement around her own original steps forward.

MAGPIE DIARIES ‘History’ (Single)
Magpie Diaries have shared their mighty new song History, written by Magpie Johnston and recorded by the band in the Tractor Shed studio at Dashville on the unceded lands of Wonnarua country.
The song centers on the belief that knowledge of Australian history is essential in allowing us to move forward as a nation in a positive light.
The video, launched on January 26, features a stirring display of Australian History archival content from the last two centuries, sourced through the National Archive. As the song begins, hauntingly dark fiddle commands your initial attention, as the heartfelt lyrics meander through to a rollicking chorus line that asks the question, ‘Do you know your history?’.
‘There’s not a lot to hold onto, we were lied to as children.’
Magpie explains, “As a child life was great, but I wasn’t really taught the true history of Australia, it was more about the colonial explorers, bushrangers and budgies. It wasn’t until later in my twenties and thirties that I began to seek out a deeper understanding of our nation’s true history. And that knowledge had a profound impact on me as an individual born in this country.”.
“These days it seems children are taught a better version of true history and there’s a generation of young people who now have power in knowledge, albeit whilst swimming in a pond of fake news and superfluous content, which can uninform or distract that learning. So as a parent, it’s our responsibility to play a role in the information exchange, to ensure that children know the true history of Australia.”
‘…so they can learn more about themselves and where they might be going.’, sings Magpie.
Led by husband-and-wife duo Magpie and Jess, Magpie Diaries, the laid- back family band are moving slowly towards a sophomore album release in 2025, starting with the release of another iconic single in ‘History.’
History is out now on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp. New album from Magpie Diaries due later this year.
