CLIO RENNER ‘Don’t Hurry The Dance’ (Album out Feb 28)

Everyone’s go-to keyboard player Clio Renner releases her second album Don’t Hurry the Dance tomorrow (Feb 28) and it’s a bewdy! Clio possesses a great feel for melody and such an interesting approach to song construction. Her instrumentation/sonic choices and prudent use of additional musicians are all about serving the song, highlighting an artist whose intentions are both thoughtful and clear.

A collection of songs born from the turbulence of the pandemic, Don’t Hurry the Dance captures moments of transformation, self-discovery, and resilience in the face of profound change. What sets Clio apart is her ability to seamlessly navigate genres and styles, all while maintaining a sound and essence that is effortlessly and uniquely her own. Each song feels like its own island, exploring real-life experiences—such as a parent’s illness, a disappointing breakup, grappling with accountability in a capitalist society, and navigating adult friendships—always leading to a lesson learned and a hope for change. A recurring theme runs throughout the album: the preciousness of life and the desire not to let it pass by, to not hurry the dance.

We spoke to Clio Renner a year ago as our Musician of the Month in February 2024, in which she spoke about the beginning of her second album. You can view that interview here.

The record came to life across Melbourne, from home studios to Sing Sing, and involved a collaborative force including co-producer Lawrence Folvig (Ainslie Wills), Pip Norman (Missy Higgins, Troye Sivan, Baker Boy), Madeleine Jevons (Penny Quartet, MSO), Jono Steer (Angie McMahon), and Daniel Farrugia (Cat Empire, Angus and Julia Stone), just to name a few.

“Each song differentiates so much in sound and colour, it was important to vary the personnel to accommodate these strong stylistic differences. I feel lucky to be surrounded by such a richly creative community that I can call upon”

“I hope anybody listening can find their own place within the album. While it’s obviously drawn from personal experience, I always try to leave the door ajar, welcoming interpretation and multiple meanings. That’s what my favourite records have always done”

Clio has been tricky to miss on stage over the last decade. She has consistently toured and recorded with numerous notable Australian and international artists including Angus and Julia Stone, Paul Kelly, Remi Wolf, Missy Higgins, G Flip, Tim Rogers, Bob Evans, Alex Lahey, Killing Heidi and Olympia. Additionally, she has

been the keyboardist for the beloved Rockwiz house band since 2015.

Don’t Hurry the Dance will be available on all streaming platforms on February 28

Clio will celebrate the album’s launch with a live performance at the Gasometer Hotel on March 27, 2025, joined by special guests Lewis Coleman and Imogen Cygler.

JULIAN JAMES ‘White Lightning’ (single March 1)

Award-winning Melbourne musician Julian James dives deep into the spirit of Americana with his spirited new single, White Lightning. A high-energy celebration of roots and bluegrass, this track fuses Julian’s signature whiskey-soaked sound with a powerhouse of musical talent, delivering a song destined to get toes tapping.

White Lightning will be released across all digital platforms on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Produced by ARIA and multiple Golden Guitar award-winning Matt Fell, the track features a stellar lineup of collaborators. Pete Denahy, who once shared the stage with Australian country music legend Slim Dusty, lends his masterful fiddle to the track, while Hamish Davidson (Davidson Brothers) commands the banjo and mandolin with fiery finesse.

Says Julian: “There’s something magical about bringing together such a talented group of musicians. With White Lightning, I wanted to honour the energy of bluegrass while giving it my own twist. Having Pete on the track, knowing he’s played alongside Slim Dusty—an icon of Australian country music—makes this even more special.”

The release of White Lightning follows the success of Julian’s previous single, Catfish, a fresh and upbeat reimagining of the Muddy Waters classic Catfish Blues. The track was met with widespread acclaim, earning a spot on Joe Bonamassa’s Cutting Edge Blues playlist and reaffirming Julian’s place as a leading voice in modern blues and Americana.

Whether performing with his band, The Moonshine State, Julian’s live shows have become synonymous with passion and raw energy. Now, he takes to the road in duo mode with his wife, the vibrantly talented Beci Kate on percussion and backing vocals.

Get ready for White Lightning—a fiery anthem that captures the essence of Americana Blues and pays homage to the rich traditions of roots and bluegrass.

Julian James will continue his Australian touring run in metro and regional Victoria, South Australia and for the first time, Western Australia over the coming months, before performing a string of shows around Europe.

BOBBY ALU ANNOUNCES EPIC DOUBLE AUSTRALIAN TOUR

Beloved Australian singer, ukulele strummer and drummer Bobby Alu is set to bring his signature feel-good energy to audiences with two exciting new tours to soundtrack both sunrises and sunsets across Australia.

Following the success of last year’s brekky run across 60+ Australian and European cafes, Bobby hits the road again with coffee in hand for the Breakfast Tour, bringing 42 free morning shows to fans across NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, TAS, and WA. Swapping out his morning brew for an evening cocktail, Bobby changes gears in nine select locations along the way, unleashing his full, dynamic live experience in intimate venues in celebration of the 10th anniversary of his fan-favourite song ‘My Style’.

Last year’s innovative Breakfast Tour concept turned the live music model upside down and delighted industry and punters alike with the wholesome backing of a milk sponsor, all the while serving as an album pre-order campaign that saw Bobby’s fourth studio album Keep It Tropical achieve #1 on AIR’s Independent Label Albums chart, and #3 on ARIA’s Australian Albums chart. Many coffee shops reported their best sales day of the year, with punters often overflowing into adjacent laneways and car parks.

Performing stripped-back solo sets alongside some of the best coffee and breakfast spreads in Australia, Bobby collaborates once more with Breakfast Shirts (aka Mark Crotti), the brekky connoisseur who made waves with his online following last year. A road dog at heart, always striving to step up or completely reimagine the creative experience, Bobby adds the night time element this year to roll out two tours concurrently. As the sun sets in nine Breakfast Tour locations across Australia, Bobby will switch gears into the ‘My Style’ Tour. In limited-capacity venues with his band of musical soul brothers in tow for most dates, these intimate performances will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Bobby’s beloved song ‘My Style’ from the Bay Sessions EP (2015).

The Breakfast Tour is set to kick off on March 24, followed by the launch of the ‘My Style’ Tour on March 29. Tickets available via bobbyalu.com/tour.

PAIGE BARNARD ’Strong’ (Single/video)

Naarm-based artist Paige Barnard brings forth her newest sombre pop ballad ‘Strong’ and its music video, both packed with a dreamy yearning and both out on February 19th.

With a powerful voice that gleams and the ability to weave songs made of pure feeling, Paige Barnard has gathered attention from all corners, from the likes of Triple J Unearthed, The Music, and MILKY, and receiving accolades like the Darebin Songwriters Judges Award 2020 and Recipient of AIR Women in Music Mentor Program.

Her latest single, ‘Strong’, is the perfect picture of her signature style, with heavy chorded piano setting the base for her steady, rich vocals. Showing an incredible range, Barnard’s unparalleled passion spills over into the listener, creating a personal, intimate soundscape.

‘Strong’ is a heart-wrenching emotional geyser, a ballad built from post-breakup emotion, exploring the ways that one is haunted by the ghosts of relationships past. Real and raw, it showcases the strength and vulnerability it can take to let go of the dreams built from that relationship and dream new dreams alone. Barnard speaks on the meaning behind the track:

“I was really struggling to heal and move on from this relationship because nothing really went wrong, it was more the long distance that we couldn’t manage and commit to and so I felt quite rejected at the same time. So this song was really cathartic for me to write and it ended up being the last song I actually wrote about this breakup, and there was a lot!”

Shot on film, the music video is a hazy and nostalgic dream, showing Paige bathed in sunlight, by the ocean, and amongst flowers, always alone, with the layered imagery making it seem like she’s her own companion. Filmed by Josie Wappet and edited by Eimhin Healy, the clip is a perfect accompaniment to this stunning track.

Get whisked away by Paige Barnard’s heart-wrenching voice in ‘Strong’, her latest single, out on Wednesday, February 19.

JIMMY BARNES ANNOUNCES ‘DEFIANT’ TOUR FOR JUNE 2025

Frontier Touring and MG Live are thrilled to announce Australia’s heart of rock n roll, Jimmy Barnes, with his 6-date DEFIANT TOUR for June 2025.

Touring in celebration of his 21st studio album DEFIANT (out Fri 6 June via Mushroom Music, pre order here), Jimmy with his 9-piece band will play Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre on Saturday 7 June, Riverside Theatre PCEC, Perth on Sunday 8 June before heading to the east coast performing at the Palais Theatre, Melbourne on Saturday 14 June, The Fortitude Music Hall, Brisbane on Saturday 21 June and Sydney’s State Theatre on Friday 27 June before a final show at Canberra Theatre on Saturday 28 June.

Jimmy said, “I’m really looking forward to getting back on stage with my band again. I’m so proud of this new record – all the songs mean a lot to me and I can’t wait to share them with you.  It’s going to be some serious fun!”

Frontier Member presale commences Wednesday 26 February, 11am local time before tickets go on sale Friday 28 February, 10am local time.  Tickets via:  frontiertouring.com/jimmybarnes

Never one to slow down, Jimmy Barnes has always been a fighter…the son of a Scottish boxing champion, a survivor of a violent childhood and was once part of an Adelaide band who battled tooth and claw for six years, so it’s only fitting his new album and tour is appropriately DEFIANT.  Having notched up an unprecedented 21 #1’s on the Australian album charts (15 as a solo artist and 6 with Cold Chisel), the DEFIANT TOUR follows Cold Chisel’s triumphant The Big Five-O anniversary 2024 tour, and sees Jimmy hitting the road with his 9-piece band as he brings his DEFIANT album to life.

The first taste of the album being released tomorrow is the double-single ‘New Day’ (via Mushroom Music – available Monday 24 February here), including the accompanying music video directed by Paul van Kan starring Troy Cassar-Daley and Laurel Edwards and ‘Beyond the River Bend’ – inspired by the Barnes’ family home in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales where “hope keeps flowing like water”. It’s a thread which weaves through this music as it does through Jimmy’s life.

These are clearly the songs of a man who still has a point to prove: raw and inspiring. And he is in career-best voice – riding and driving an emotional rollercoaster from soothing croons to wailing abandon. They are the sounds of a singer who has finally arrived at the point of complete instrumental
ontrol.

ZIGGY ALBERTS ‘New Love’ (Album)

If albums are snapshots of an artist’s creative journey, the ZIGGY ALBERTS’ output paints a portrait of one that has had many different and exciting turns. The award-winning Australian artist is truly a global citizen these days, with his music and words giving him the opportunity to do laps around the world, nourishing a mode of connection with fan bases throughout North and South America, Europe, the UK, Asia and of course, his beloved home turf community.

From his early days busking on the streets of Australia’s Byron Bay, Alberts has always understood the power of direct connection with his audience. His rise has been driven not only by his emotionally resonant folk songs but by his determination to bring his music to fans face-to-face. Now a decade into his career, he has grown his fanbase the old-fashioned way: by playing show after show, year after year, turning small rooms into sold-out venues across the globe.

With the close of another summer season, Ziggy now reaches a new milestone – the release of his seventh album, NEW LOVE. It is an album full of insightful observations on life and the ever changing world we live in; more importantly, the album holds a mirror up to the beauty and flaws of the human condition. Such themes have maintained presence in Ziggy’s catalogue to date but with New Love, he displays continued maturity in his songwriting skills but also his world view.

Ziggy has described this album as a sister record to his 2018 ARIA Gold-Certified album, LAPS AROUND THE SUN. Written in different locations that stretched across the UK and Europe, before returning to Australia’s East Coast, New Love is a collection of material that brings vibrant acoustic melodies together with soaring arrangements that bolster Ziggy’s moments of introspection.

Authenticity remains at the core of the music, with tracks like ‘Outlaw’ and ‘Where Does The Love Go?’ leading with transparency and a heartfelt tone. Songs like ‘Addicted’ and ‘Blessings’ highlight the dynamism of Ziggy as a musician and songwriter, while moments of intimacy felt on tracks such as ‘Feeling Blue’ and ‘I’m With You’ make it impossible as a listener, not to be captivated.

The album’s structure, split between a warm, folk-inspired Side A and a more expansive, rock-and-country-influenced Side B, mirrors the duality of life.

Side A represents the light, or North, with songs that feel familiar and intimate; while Side B ventures into darker tones and broader instrumentation, representing the South. It’s this balance that makes ‘New Love’ feel cohesive, giving the album a sense of being made to be listened to in its entirety, much like the records that inspired Alberts early on in his career.

ROWENA WISE & DIDIRRI ‘No Cure For Love’ (Single) and Tour Announce

Indie-folk darlings Rowena Wise and Didirri have today released their stunning duet ‘No Cure For Love’ and announced an 11 date, dual coast Australia tour via Beloved / Remote Control.

Didirri, known for his masterful storytelling and dynamic live performances, joins forces with Rowena Wise, whose crystalline vocals and delicate songs have earned her a devoted following across the country. This national tour sees them performing as a combined ensemble, presenting songs from their acclaimed debut records alongside solo works and collaborative pieces in a special extended set.

‘No Cure For Love’ is an evocation of the complexity of long-term love, with sweeping melodies and harmonies that hold the listener in a vice. The single is raw and rapturous in theme, using the pain and the pitfalls of their eight-year relationship to create a troubled ballad of real beauty. It sees two of Australia’s beloved indie singers at the top of their game, mining their sorrow to incredible effect. Recorded completely live at The Rat Shack, and produced by Robert Muinos (Julia Jacklin, Didirri, Little May) with Rich Bradbeer on bass, Lewis Coleman on synths/keys, and Josh Barber on drums.

“‘No Cure for Love’ was written in the wake of realising our love can be a double-edged sword. We’ve been in a relationship for 8 years, and turbulence is inevitable with anything that lasts a long time. During a phase of smoking weed and arguments, we could not see eye to eye. It was confusing when we’ve known each other so deeply and for so long, only to arrive at the feeling that we’re complete strangers. In those moments we considered whether the bond that tied us together was becoming too much to bear. The words “I’m too much for you” and “you’re going to leave me one day” were carelessly spoken, like a self-fulfilling prophecy waiting to happen. This song captures those moments where we have crumbled, said hurtful things, and had to look at our options. We came out of that chapter ready to face the challenge of our love, realising we can only love and respect each other if we do this for ourselves first. We can’t take each other (and ourselves) for granted if we want to be companions in this long journey together.

The music video for ‘No Cure For Love’ was directed and edited by Didirri, and shot predominantly on 8mm black and white film. It interlaces a micro-perspective on the comfort of domesticity with Shibari knotwork. The clip represents the restrictive discomforts and familiar pleasure of being in any long-term relationship. We were stripped bare and tied up for the final shot of the clip, embracing a new phase of creativity by exploring body positivity in both our artistic expressions. We were supported by an incredible crew which made the challenge fun to undertake,” said Rowena and Didirri of the single.

‘No Cure For Love’, which premiered on FLOOD Magazine, illuminates two artists who have carved out a reputation as inimitable figures in the Australian music landscape. Rowena Wise is hot off the 2024 release of her solo record Senseless Acts of Beauty, a compelling and incisive indie-folk album on love, loss, and alienation which saw her shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize 2024. Rowena will skip across the pond in March to play a show in Toronto, Canada followed by New Colossus Festival in NYC from March 5-8, then SXSW in Austin, with further American tour dates to be announced.

With 75 million streams and an ARIA gold accreditation under his belt for ‘Blind You’, Didirri released his debut album Caught in the Act in 2023 to critical acclaim. Openly delving into subjects we shy away from, Didirri remains true to his mission of creating music for ‘lovers and over thinkers,’ weaving uninhibited lyrics that touch raw nerves and charming melodies that soothe hearts and minds. This approach has seen him sell out tours locally and abroad, and perform at festivals including Splendour In The Grass, The Great Escape, Latitude and Primavera Sound.

SHEA FISHER ‘Take Me Back To Texas’ (Single out March 3)

American-based Australian country music star Shea Fisher has announced the release of her first single in five years, Take Me Back To Texas (out March 3), a beautifully heartfelt song that reflects her love of the western lifestyle and speaks to her authentic self.

Shea achieved six #1 Country singles in Australia while signed to ABC Music as well as a Top 20 CMT video in the US for Don’t Chase Me. During the last five years she has led an incredibly busy and productive life, raising her three children with husband, world champion rodeo cowboy Tyson Durfey, and launching two highly successful entrepreneurial ventures: Shea Michelle Buckles and Shea Baby children’s western clothing (now in more 800 major stores across the US). In that time, she also established an online fitness and health program called Fit With Shea which has over 1000 subscribers and growing.

Music has always been in Shea’s heart, however, and with Tyson now retired from the US rodeo circuit and her children a little older, the time is right for this country hitmaker to make her mark on the music industry once again. As Shea has gradually built a more musical focus on her social media platforms, her following has grown from 30,000 to more than 300,000, and plans are now in place to release three new singles with accompanying music videos in 2025.

Collaborations With Post Malone, Keith Urban Hitmaker

Co-written with Karyn Rochelle, Garth Brooks’ longtime harmony singer, and five-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter, Jessie Jo Dillon (Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Keith Urban and many more), Take Me Back To Texas is the first grand taste of Shea Fisher’s musical comeback, as she continues to dream big as an independent artist and conquer new horizons. Now in her mid-30s Shea hopes her comeback will inspire other women to realise that age and motherhood are not barriers to success.

“A year ago, I might’ve thought it was crazy to go on this whirlwind ride again,” Shea says. “But I now see that if you have a passion, it doesn’t matter how old you are – you just have to make it happen.”

Take Me Back To Texas is available from March 3 on all streaming and download platforms.

MARLON WILLIANS AND LORDE  “Kāhore He Manu E,” (Single/Video)

Marlon Williams and Lorde have collaborated on“Kāhore He Manu E,” the next single and video from his first Māori language album, Te Whare Tīwekaweka, out April 4th. The video is pulled from Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds, the forthcoming documentary film by Ursula Grace Williams about the making of the record, and is a window into the recording process, friendship, and collaboration between Williams and Lorde (aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor).

When Williams was having difficulty writing an album in English, he found that switching to his other ancestral tongue, which while not fluent, unlocked a new means of self-expression and felt like an important act of reclamation. He spent five years creating Te Whare Tīwekaweka, reconnecting with family, friends, and his home town of Lyttelton after a globe-trotting decade establishing his career. The inspiration he found in those people can be seen throughout the record, including on “Kāhore He Manu E.”

Watch the Video for “Kāhore He Manu E (Featuring Lorde)”

“‘Kāhore He Manu E’ was one of those gentle labours. It played itself out to me, easily and near complete from the first. It was also obvious who should be singing it; Ella’s voice in a very real sense wrote the song. The distinct and striking characteristics in her voice cornering and demanding of the melody and phrasing what only her voice could. Singing with Ella is incredible; the amount of mind she’s able to pour into the vessel. We got to know each other through sharing the highs and lows of touring life, and in a real sense this song is an ode to the colourful but grim wormhole of road life, to the friends made and lost in the folds of time, ‘visions lost in the blur.’”

– Marlon Williams

“Over the course of several years I watched Marlon pull at the threads that became Te Whare Tīwekaweka. I saw that the further he got into the album, the deeper my friend came to know himself, his whānau and his world at large. Marlon is an undercover perfectionist, and he was never going to embark on this journey without turning over every stone, crafting complex waiata that speak to the past while also braiding in his characteristic humour and X-ray vision. Singing with Marlon is one of my favourite things to do on earth, whether we are tipsy backstage by a pool table or in a luscious  studio, and I was honoured he asked me to sing with him on this album. I’m so proud of my friend.”
– Lorde

Supported by long-time touring band The Yarra Benders, co-producer Mark Perkins, the He Waka Kōtuia singers, and Lyttleton-based rapper Kommi, the album is both contemporary and timeless, traversing Marlon’s folk-country-bluegrass territory, while continuing his exploration of pop and the inherent rhythms of Māori music.

The process of making this powerful record has been intimately captured in Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds, a feature length documentary due out alongside the album. A profound, revealing and joyful journey of reconnection and self-discovery, the film weaves together the various strands of Marlon’s experience – musician, actor, son, friend and student  – as he reflects on his career so far and the challenges and pleasures of articulating his worldview in te reo Māori.

PARRTJIMA FESTIVAL UNVEILS FIRST NATIONS MUSIC, ARTS AND COMEDY LINEUP FOR DAZZLING 10TH EDITION

New installations headline a massive 10-night program featuring illuminated artworks, music and comedy performances, talks, workshops, markets and more. Parrtjima – A Festival in Light has unveiled its full program for the milestone 10th edition, set to illuminate Alice Springs (Mparntwe) from 4–13 April 2025.

As the only Aboriginal light festival of its kind, Parrtjima 2025 will showcase the works of more than 20 First Nations artists across six major installations, alongside more than 100 performers and special guests spanning music, comedy, art, workshops, talks and more.

The free, all-ages event will debut four new dazzling installations this year, featuring a diverse mix of emerging and established artists. Visitors can look forward to immersive experiences, each offering fresh artistic perspectives to the festival’s ever-evolving creative landscape.

For 10 magical nights on Arrernte Country, Parrtjima will bring the world’s oldest living culture to life with captivating light displays and modern technology, all set against the star-studded skies of Central Australia and the awe-inspiring, 300-million-year-old Tjoritja/MacDonnell Ranges.

New installations and artists set to shine

Parrtjima 2025 will feature four stunning new installations by award-winning and emerging Aboriginal artists that celebrate cultural continuity and storytelling, all inspired by this year’s festival theme, ‘Timelessness’.

Three Generations of Station Women by Balanggarra and Yolŋu artist Molly Hunt pays tribute to the resilience and strength of three generations of Aboriginal stockwomen in an animated comic strip. This cinematic experience will be enriched by an original soundtrack composed by Australian actor Mark Coles Smith.

Hypnotic Reverberations will immerse visitors in Bobby West Tjupurrula’s Country, where beams of light dance through mist and reflect across a shallow pool, forming ever-shifting dreamscapes that evoke the spirit of the land. Bobby West Tjupurrula won the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2011 and is son of Freddy West Tjupurrula, one of the original shareholders of Papunya Tula Artists.

Transforming Light & Country invites festivalgoers to engage with Lyall Giles’ intricate sand dune patterns. By activating drums, guests will trigger dynamic rings of light and immersive natural soundscapes, highlighting the deep connection between ancient landforms and life-giving waterholes. Giles, an exciting and dynamic artist, is the most senior wati (man) in Tjukurla and is entrusted with preserving a vast library of stories in his head. Though he has shared these stories for many years, it is only recently that he has begun painting them.

At the festival’s entrance, The Gateway will stand as a powerful welcome, featuring towering poles created collaboratively by artists from Alice Springs’ three estate groups – Antulye, Irlpme, and Mparntwe.

Festival favourites Grounded and the MacDonnell Ranges Light Show will make their highly anticipated returns in 2025. The MacDonnell Ranges Light Show will offer a breathtaking fusion of contemporary classical music and Arrernte language, paying tribute to the deep spiritual connection to the land. Meanwhile, Grounded will captivate audiences with a large-scale projection, where six striking Indigenous artworks transform the red earth into a luminous, ever-shifting canvas beneath visitors’ feet.

Interactive and immersive workshops

Parrtjima 2025 will present an exciting lineup of interactive workshops, offering festivalgoers a unique opportunity to engage with diverse cultural traditions and artistic expressions.

Highlights include a watercolour painting session with local art centre Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands, where participants can explore the renowned Hermannsburg style made famous by Central Australian Aboriginal art legend, Albert Namatjira. Parrtjima Curator and Bundjalung woman Rhoda Roberts AO will lead a weaving workshop, while Muruwari musician Dobby will lead a high-energy drumming workshop, blending traditional Indigenous beats with contemporary percussion.

Bushfoods and traditional recipes will be the focus of a special session with Rayleen Brown (Kungkas Can Cook) and Bundjalung chef Mark Olive (Midden by Mark Olive, Sydney Opera House), while renowned language holder and ecologist Veronica Perrule Dobson will share insights into the medicinal properties of native plants in Aboriginal healing.

Thought-provoking talks

Parrtjima 2025 will feature a compelling series of talks and ‘in conversation’ sessions with some of Australia’s most influential Indigenous voices. Covering a diverse range of topics – including the power of media, music, art, and communication, as well as cultural economies and pathways to change – these discussions will offer deep insights and inspiration.

From the fusion of tradition and technology to the power of radio and rap as modern tools for connection, these sessions will challenge perspectives and celebrate the enduring strength of First Nations voices. Conversations will explore the ways that creativity can shape identity, the responsibility of cultural custodianship, and how storytelling continues to drive change – whether through country music, cinema, or the painted lines of an artwork.

Notable guests and speakers include Arrernte filmmaker and producer Rachel Perkins, along with kinship, language, and cultural reclamation expert Michael Liddle.  Community leader and advocate Armani Francois will also take the stage, along with ABC Radio National’s Rudi Bremer and Australian country music legend Troy Cassar-Daley.

Music, comedy and markets

Parrtjima 2025 will feature nightly live performances and special comedy acts. The festival’s opening weekend will see Troy Cassar-Daley take the stage to perform his only free

performance announced for the remainder of 2025, and his only free gig scheduled for 2025 in Outback Australia.

The festival’s closing weekend will feature an historic, ticketed performance by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra – marking the first orchestral performance in Parrtjima’s history. The unforgettable open-air event will immerse audiences in a stunning fusion of music and light as the 50+ piece orchestra plays alongside acclaimed Desert Divas Catherine Satour, Casii Williams, and Bronwyn Stuart.

Other musical highlights will include singer-songwriter Bumpy, hip-hop group Dem Mob, and Warren H Williams & Western Wind.

The festival’s first-ever comedy night, set for Thursday, 10 April 2025, will deliver plenty of laughs with stand-up performances by Andy Saunders and Sean Choolburra.

Festivalgoers can also look forward to the return of the Blak Markets during Parrtjima’s opening weekend. This collaboration between Desart and the NT Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN) provides a unique opportunity to explore and ethically purchase First Nations creations, from paintings and jewellery to woodwork, prints, baskets, sculptures, and handcrafted pieces from Central Australian art centres and businesses.

The much-loved festival continues to make a significant social and economic impact on the Northern Territory. Parrtjima 2024 attracted over 21,000 attendances, generating $9.42 million for the Alice Springs economy.

Tickets for the Darwin Symphony Orchestra performance are available via the Parrtjima website and select travel partners. Limited free tickets for certain areas will be released closer to the event, along with a small number of tickets at the door.

MECHA MECHA ‘Mourning In The Evening’ (Single)

Dark indie triad Mecha Mecha is bringing the heat on Thursday, February 20 in their newest woeful tale ‘Mourning In The Evening’, an epic and moody song built on the rubble of a seminal breakup. Releasing with it, is its demo, ‘The Worst Dream’.

The three-piece duo was formed when two Brisbanite brothers, Angelo (who plays the drums) and Walter (a singer and player of various instruments), literally stumbled into the melodic aroma of Isaac Vincent’s violin playing as he busked on the streets of Lismore in 2016, and from then on, they’ve been a united front as they’ve performed on the bill with superstar lineup featuring Smash Mouth, Marsha Hines, Killing Heidi, Diana Anaid and The Church at Airlie Beach Festival of Music, received thousands of views on Youtube, been nominated for a myriad of awards, and DIY’d their way to glory.

Their latest single ‘Mourning In The Evening’ is deliciously dark and broody. Piano, drums, and static noise melt together to create a heavy fog of compelling gloom that settles around the vocals. Walter Anthony Webb’s voice is like a fallen angel’s, grieved and beautiful as it journeys from high notes to lows, taking a tone that shapeshifts through genres. Midway, the somber tone of the song takes on a more upbeat rock tone, before sliding back into that sweet sorrow, drawing the listener in and keeping them on their toes.

The lyrics of this song are heavy and emotional, as the singer grieves a breakup like it’s a death, but looking down on himself from an external perspective, as a means to cope with the end of a significant relationship. He struggles to understand his life now with this new outlook, refusing to move through the stages of grief, ending with the comforting nonsense of ‘na-na-na’s. Walter Webb describes the lyrics as,

“Esoterically, it’s just a comment on how life often seems to hit us with everything in one go, and we push on, the silver lining of rain clouds acting as a lighthouse that guides you through whatever storm it is you’re traversing. But lyrically, it’s just a sad song about the worst part of a break up.”

Reflecting the raw, vulnerable nature of the release in a magnifying mirror is the b-side demo, ‘The Worst Dream’, which lays emotions bare for the world to see.

Mecha Mecha is set to perform with The Wish Fufilled and Whitt’s End on February 20, the day of the release, at The Cave Inn in Woolloongabba.

JOAN & THE GIANTS ‘Still Breathing’ (Single)

Ahead of their very first international shows in Austin, Texas for SXSW, Joan & the Giants return with their first music of 2025: an emotional indie rock single, ‘Still Breathing’ (out now).

Joan and the Giants’ collections of accolades expanded exponentially in the past year. Having won Best Rock Song and Runner up Song of the Year at the 2024 WA Song of the Year Awards, touring along Australia’s east coast, playing Sydney’s SXSW, and playing alongside P!NK and Tones and I at OPTUS Stadium, 2024 was a productive year, and 2025 is set up to be a fantastic follow-up as they head to the US for SXSW in March.

‘Still Breathing’ is a dreamy and emotional track. Born impromptu from a jam session, this is a free-flowing and heartfelt single and a true reflection of the love and passion that Joan & the Giants put into every song. With two tracks of guitar, a percussive track and melodic track, this song is imbued with an internal conflict. Its echoing instrumentals straddle the line of wistful pop and energetic rock. Frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth’s voice is intoxicatingly authentic and leads the listener on an moving journey.

The emotion of this song comes from a very real place. This single marks the parting of frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth and her long time partner, bandmate and songwriter, Aaron Birch after their nine-year relationship has come to an end. A tumultuous time for both of them, this is a product of their shared pain after their separation, and in that tragedy a passion is captured. This song acts as a farewell to Aaron as he and the band go their separate ways. Grace comments that:

“The lyrics really speak about an inner war, trying to fight for the people you once were but knowing you have to let it all go – “But some things are best kept in the past, and I know we weren’t built to last”.

Fall into the emotion of Joan & the Giants’ new single ‘Still Breathing’, out now!
