RADIO BIRDMAN: RETALIATE FIRST (Book in Stores now –Allen and Unwin)

You’ve heard the myths about legendary Sydney band, Radio Birdman, and perhaps you were fortunate enough to be among the thousands who witnessed the life changing performances on their recent sold out and final tour of Australia.

Now the dust has settled and the tinnitus eased, read the full story of their half century history in Radio Birdman – Retaliate First by Murray Engleheart, author of global best seller, AC/DC: Maximum Rock and Roll and the Oz rock bible, Blood Sweat and Beers.

Engleheart is a 40 year veteran of Australian music journalism and has interviewed Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and many others.

Seven years in the making, Radio Birdman – Retaliate First is drawn from more than 150 interviews with the band, their closest associates and most staunchly dedicated fans. It’s the first in-depth look at the Sydney act that, through sheer force of will, went from industry outcasts, who at times had to physically fight their way out of venues, to one of the biggest acts in the country, inductees into the ARIA Hall Of Fame and international reverence.

Birdman stalked into the post Vietnam War era of mid 70’s Sydney when the Woodstock age was spent and blasted out the then unknown music of the Stooges (with Iggy Pop), the Velvet Underground (with Lou Reed) and the New York Dolls when every other band desperately wanted to be Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple. Led by Australia’s own Mick Jagger and Keith Richards – singer Rob Younger and Detroit born guitarist Deniz Tek – Birdman played AT audiences not for them. Tek personally sold a guitar to Keith Richards and in his later career as a flight surgeon for the US Marines is believed to have had his “Iceman” call sign co-opted for the movie, Top Gun.

Radio Birdman’s fan base was and remains fervent with future members of Midnight Oil, The Sunnyboys, The Divinyls and Hoodoo Gurus as well as the later founder of Mambo and Deus Ex Machina part of their early audience. Birdman cemented a place in punk rock’s early history next to the likes of Ramones but their hard yards in staging their own gigs and making their own recordings paved the way for the Australian independent music industry.

The DNA of Radio Birdman has now been an indivisible part of that scene for 50 years. Radio Birdman however didn’t just reshape the conservative musical culture in Australia, they changed lives, permanently redirecting the existence of countless individuals. Something not even the mighty AC/DC can claim.

Read the full how, why and when in Radio Birdman – Retaliate First.
RADIO BIRDMAN: RETALIATE FIRST (Allan & Unwin) is available now in bookstores across Australia

LUCY PARLE ‘Best Of Me’ (Single/Video)

At just 20 years old, emerging country music talent Lucy Parle has clocked up some serious miles. She’s notched numerous accolades to her name – including nods from Triple J’s Unearthed High and the International Songwriting Competition – and a slew of performances and collaborations alongside many of the country’s best. The singer-songwriter reflects on the road so far in her latest offering, ‘Best of Me’. It’s a deeply personal track that marks a pivotal moment in Lucy’s musical journey. “The song is about me not being happy with my life and where my music was heading and the realisation that I had to make some major changes.”

Lucy was personally invited to receive mentorship from country music legend Gina Jeffreys when she was just 14. This partnership led to collaboration with Jeffreys’ husband, Rod McCormack (The Wolfe Brothers, Adam Harvey), who not only produced the new single, but co-wrote the hit alongside Lucy and Nashville-based songwriter Sam Gay.

The recording process for ‘Best of Me’ was both invigorating and collaborative. “We had a live band in the studio, which included myself, Rod McCormack, Jeff McCormack, and Glenn Wilson. The experience was a lot of fun and brought an authentic feel to the track,” Lucy reflects.

Authenticity is taking centre stage in the next chapter of Lucy’s career. “I decided to leave my record label and publisher as they were pushing me in a direction I didn’t want to go.” Returning to her country music roots, ‘Best of Me’, radiates confidence; Lucy’s cosy vocal, anchored upon a wash of mandolin and fiddle.

“I have seen Lucy develop into an artist who, I believe, has the potential to be one of Australia’s and the world’s finest writers and performers,” shares Rod McCormack.

The accompanying music video, produced by Duncan Toombs from The Filmery, pictures Lucy amidst Sydney CBD’s grungy metro. “It was the most embarrassing day of my life,” she laughs. “He was shooting me walking through the city and on buses singing the song. There were lots of random people staring at me, probably thinking I was a crazy person,” The video also features a special cameo appearance from her beloved pup, Charlie.

WATCH VIDEO HERE

As an ardent animal rights supporter, Lucy’s compassion extends beyond her music. She supports Animals Australia and the Animal Justice Party, has adopted a koala, and previously volunteered at Moo To Ewe, a farmed animal sanctuary on the coast. Lucy’s love for animals is evident in her personal life, where she dotes on her dog, Charlie – aka Pup, Charles in Charge, Fatty or Sir.

URBAN GUERILLAS ‘Invitattion’ (Single)

Overwhelmed by a stunning sunrise whilst driving east on the Bangor bypass toward Sutherland Urban Guerillas’ guitarist singer / songwriter Ken Stewart had to pull over and record on his phone what would be the opening lines to a new song.  “The sun is rising, the stars fade away, the Earth invites you to a brand new day!”

The challenge then was to capture the feeling and the grandeur of these moments in song. The idea of a set of instructions or a guide to behaviour for this planet Earth that would be simple and clear and easy to follow. There is so much beauty and splendour to enjoy and life to share. So much that the human species has achieved and is capable of, but sadly the gap between our best and our worst widens.

The song ‘Invitation’ is exactly that, it’s an invitation to look at our living planet and respect what it is and how all things react to it, and to each other. To understand its fragile tolerances and have a bloody good time sharing the experience with whomever one happens across.

The idea of a new opportunity with every new day, a recurring new start leaves the song drenched in optimism. ‘Invitation’ was recorded on “Earth Day” 2024 at Jim Moginie’s Oceanic Studio with Ken Stewart Guitar/Vocals, Phil Paviour Bass/Vocals and Mick Elsley Drums/Vocals. Engineered and Produced by Ted Howard and Mastered by Jeff McCormack

The new single sees the Guerillas into their 43rd year of making music and it is becoming their most productive time so far. They are oozing songs, musical ideas and things to say. The Guerillas music is developed from a vast array of influences and interpretations and best described as alternative indie though there are recognisable traces of  folk, rock, ska, and whatever it is that makes you know you are listening to Aussie Rock, pub style.

MEG MAC AND MATT CORBY ‘Bricks’ (Single)

Two of Australia’s most celebrated voices, Meg Mac and Matt Corby, today announce the release of their collaborative single, “Bricks.” This marks Meg Mac’s first-ever collaborative single release, bringing together two powerful and distinct musical talents in a unique and mesmerizing duet.
“This all happened about a month ago and wasn’t a very thought-out process. I started writing “Bricks” and thought it would make a nice duet (I’ve always wanted to sing a duet, but no one has ever asked me!). So, I sent a voice memo to Matt, one of my favourite singers, not really expecting him to say yes. But a couple of weeks later, I was on my way to Rainbow Valley, where we finished writing the song and recorded it straight away with Chris Collins. I can’t believe it’s coming out this quickly, and now I have my first duet and so happy that it is with Matt Corby!” explains Mac.

“Meg is a great singer and writer. We were collaborating already on some writing, and she sent me an idea to see if I would be keen to write and duet with her.  We jumped into the studio pretty much straight away and I’m loving what we came out with” adds Corby.

“Bricks” represents a significant milestone for Meg Mac, following the success of her 2022 album “Matter of Time.” The album not only secured her first #1 spot on the charts but also earned her a Best Solo Artist nomination at the 2023 ARIA Awards. After a triumphant sold-out national Australian album tour in 2023 and a notable closing performance as a special guest for Sam Smith’s national tour, Meg is set to return to the stage this month as a special guest for Teddy Swims.

Matt Corby, renowned for his soulful and stirring voice, has established himself as a beloved figure in the Australian music scene. His breakout single, “Brother,” has achieved 6× Platinum status by ARIA and remains a timeless Australian classic. Corby’s most recent album, “Everything’s Fine” (2023), showcases his personal and artistic evolution. The album, which has received critical acclaim, became his third consecutive ARIA Top 10 album and garnered nominations for Album of the Year by both the J Awards and the ARIA Awards.

“Bricks” is set to captivate fans with the seamless blend of Meg Mac’s powerful vocals and Matt Corby’s emotive delivery, promising to be a standout release in 2024.

LEFT CASSETTE ‘Two Left Shoes’ (Single)

Meanjin/Brisbane-based indie-rock band Left Cassette have unveiled their propulsive debut single ‘Two Left Shoes’ – produced and mixed by Jono Fraud (Surf Trash, The Baby Breaks).

‘Two Left Shoes’ channels a raw, anthemic energy, blending soaring guitar riffs with gritty rhythms. The infectious chorus ensnares listeners with its catchy melody, while the verses build tension through punchy chords and driving drums. Lead vocalist Josh Aldred delivers each line with fervent intensity, infusing the dynamic soundscape with profound emotional depth. Click to stream ‘Two Left Shoes’

Left Cassette talk about the inspiration behind ‘Two Left Shoes’: “The track came together after many years of trial and error. Having had the track written in late 2021, Josh workshopped the song to his then-punk rock band. When Left Cassette was formed in early 2024, the song was re-workshopped and we put our own spin on it. The song was originally written about being in a relationship that was always having its ups and downs. Not knowing whether you were in it for the long haul, or on your way out the door. The relationship got to a point where neither party knew who was at fault anymore. Both just entertaining the idea that things may not be perfect, but you’re too hung up on the other person to do anything about it. Just desperately holding on for the ride.”

In the live arena, the band sold out their headliner at Tomcat earlier this year (250 tickets) and are set to return to the venue for their debut single launch party. The band are also supporting locals Satin Cali and have already played a slew of live shows across their hometown.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Catfish & The Bottleman, The Wombats and Two Door Cinema Club, the band formed after Josh “found his musical soulmate in guitarist Trent Lord shortly after making the move from Liverpool, UK to Brisbane, Australia. In 2015, Josh was playing a show that Trent was sound engineering, and the pair bonded over their shared love for early 2000s guitar music, knowing one day they wanted to bring their talents together to create something.”

Australian sensation CYRIL teams up with singer-songwriter Dean Lewis for their new single “Fall At Your Feet,” a dance-pop gem that serves as a follow-up to CYRIL’s 2023 breakthrough hit “Stumblin’ In” and his official remix for Disturbed’s “The Sound Of Silence” from February this year; both have just surpassed combined 400M streams on Spotify alone with “Stumblin’ In” entering Global Top 50 on the platform just recently and collecting a steady number of 2M streams daily.

GORDON’S GRANDSON ‘My Lover Girl’ (Single)

19-year-old Melbourne-based Gordon’s Grandson (aka Harry Prior) is releasing his latest nostalgia inducing track ‘My Lover Girl’, OUT NOW. The alternative-indie track takes listeners on a wistful and melancholic joyride, with an ethereal yet retro sound entirely written, recorded and produced from the artist’s bedroom

Prior’s journey began with learning piano in his grandfather’s nursing home, where he performed for elderly residents and earned the affectionate moniker ‘Gordon’s Grandson’. This endearing nickname has now become his stage name, paying homage to his roots and the support of his family.

The intro to the track is a montage of real voicemails, on the concept for the track Gordon’s Grandson says, “There’s just always 1 little thing that sets off my creativity and I just go from there, this time it was a voicemail. I made the intro voicemail snippet before I’d even thought about turning it into a song. I had a silly idea to use all my voicemails to make one mega sentence. I find that when you care less about executing an idea to perfection, you have room to make something more interesting than you initially intended.”

Prior continues, “I was sitting on my bed with a tiny keyboard and made the instrumental in 20 minutes. While I’m creating, I can’t allow myself to think of the song commercially. It’s the only time in life where I’m purely in the moment and I put myself in that space as much as I can”.

His previous single ‘My Mother Said’ received signficant support from triple j and unearthed, including being one of unearthed’s top 5 tracks of the week. Harry Prior has also featured in various series across Netflix, Amazon Prime, STAN, ABC, SBS and Binge – most notably the Prime Original ‘Deadloch’, and Binge’s ‘Love Me’.

‘My Lover Girl’ by Gordon’s Grandson is OUT NOW. Play/Stream here

ABBIE CARDWELL ‘Husha Husha’ (Single)

alchemy /ˈalkəmi/: “The seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination”
Abbie Cardwell’s latest musical offering is an alchemical journey in sound. Her ongoing musical pilgrimage has taken many forms throughout its expansive journey.

Twisting and turning, transforming, combining and evolving through the creative process. Mining for the elusive diamonds of her artistic soul, this process has brought about a transformative change in style, exemplified by her new single “Husha Husha” from her upcoming album, “Love is an Amplifier.”

A past winner of Triple J Unearthed, BMI USA Songwriting, and a notable competitor on ‘The Voice,’ Abbie is no stranger to the Australian music scene. With guitar, banjo, harmonica, and ukulele in hand, her international sojourn has included performances with the likes of Tony Joe White, Steve Earle, Kasey Chambers, and The Waifs.
“Husha Husha” began as an acoustic, country-ish lullaby many years ago, but evolved significantly after Abbie’s participation in an online song club where she explored unfamiliar territory with beats and samples.

This revival alchemised into a dreamy, intoxicating track inspired by a George Carlin joke about “The Great American Dream; ‘cause you gotta be asleep to believe it!”. Abbie playfully nudges listeners to notice life’s sweet distractions that can buffer us from growing beyond our discomfort and limitations.

The addition of electronic elements has utterly transformed Abbie’s songwriting. The evolution was greatly influenced by producer Matthew Engelbrecht, a multi-instrumentalist, techno-writer and bassist for Bernard Fanning.

Matthew’s vast experience and collaborative spirit were instrumental in shaping the final sound of “Husha Husha” and the entire album.

Creating music has been something of a healing process for Abbie in recent years; free from expectations and genre constraints. This period of introspection and growth, spent reconnecting with nature and her inner self, has imbued her creations with a newfound depth and emotion that can be heard in the latest offerings. As she eloquently sings, “Love is the only master you will ever answer to.”

The new body of work is a genre-spanning celebration that weaves together elements of electronic beats, Americana, soul and dreamy pop. Abbie’s signature warm vocal tones glide over alluring beats and rhythmic patterns, creating a soundscape that is both eclectic and cohesive.

With its wide sonic aperture the latest single and album journey through introspective ballads, energetic electronic tracks, and soulful melodies, reflecting Abbie’s multifaceted musical identity and soul journey. Three singles usher in this new era before the full album drops in October.

For now, single #1 ‘Husha Husha’ out now on all streaming platforms.

The track marks the singer-songwriter’s first collaboration with producer duo MSquared, a departure from Robbie’s usual recording process. “I recorded Blow The Speakers with Jared Adlam and that’s a very comfortable creative environment for me. Working with Michael & Michael was new, and I was a little out of my comfort zone – but that was a good thing. They’re amazing and I’m absolutely stoked with the result.”

The single’s quirky music video further sums up the talent that is Robbie Mortimer. “As soon as I recorded the song, I knew I wanted to make a music video that matched the energy and fun depicted in the feel-good lyrics and aligned with my humorous and cheeky side.” WATCH VIDEO HERE

Robbie is currently taking the stage by storm as the feature artist on the Professional Bull Rider’s Association (PBR) Monster Energy Tour. “I’ve been having a blast playing to sold out arenas and Entertainment Centres on the PBR tour.” Later this year he’ll make his Groundwater Country Music Festival debut, alongside a stacked line-up of Australia’s finest performers.

Robbie Mortimer continues to captivate audiences with his unique blend of authenticity and modern flair. The jubilant, ‘You Got That Love’, not only highlights his growth as an artist but also cements his place as a genuine rising star.

ALISON MOYET – ‘SO AM I’ (Single) “key’ (Album out October 4)

Alison Moyet inspired a wave of fan anticipation when she announced the October 4th release date of her upcoming album ‘Key’, a collection of 16 reworked singles, fan favourites and deep cuts boosted by two new songs. It quickly became Amazon’s #1 selling vinyl above Taylor Swift, Coldplay and Billie Eilish, while the world-class talent that propelled Alison to achieve two #1 albums, six Top 10 singles, three BRIT Awards and a Grammy nomination was put back in the spotlight with a stunning Radio 2 Piano Room session.  Listen to ‘So Am I’ HERE.

One of the lesser-discovered gems from Alison’s published works, ‘So Am I’ features on her 1994 album ‘Essex’. Lyrically, a wry and sardonic out-of-body observation of defeat, it is counted amongst Moyet’s favourites. The ‘Key’version refocuses attention on the song in a collection which aims to unify her back catalogue into a cohesive form for live presentation. Written with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, ‘So Am I’ in its new iteration, joins the iconic re-visited

‘All Cried Out’ and the brand-new song ‘Such Small Ale’ in previewing the ‘Key’ album. A set that contextualises and acknowledges 40 years of original work, gathering together hits and deep cuts alike for an album where no re-packaging was desired. Produced and arranged by Sean McGhee, ‘So Am I’ is also graced by Suede guitarist Richard Oakes, one of Alison’s other key collaborators in this collection.

‘Key’ is available to pre-order HERE. In addition to Amazon’s popular exclusive signed orange double-vinyl with an alternate cover, her official store offers a turquoise double-vinyl, a white double-vinyl and a CD, while all bundles add a signed art print. In addition, there are retailer exclusive versions available from The Sound of Vinyl (a limited run signed marble black-and-white double-vinyl), select indie stores (a splatter double-vinyl) and HMV (yellow-and-black smoke double-vinyl).

In addition to the launch of ‘Key’, Alison has been further reflecting on her story with the hit podcast series ‘40 Moyet Moments’, in which she looks back upon landmark moments in her career to date during in-depth conversations with Steve Coats-Dennis. Interest has been immense, with #1 podcast chart positions achieved onApple Podcasts UK (Music and Music Interviews), Spotify UK (Music), Apple Podcasts Australia (Music Interviews) and Apple Podcasts Ireland (Music) plus strong placings in key charts in the USA and Canada. ‘40 Moyet Moments’ is available HERE.

Alison Moyet recently announced details of a long-awaited world tour which commences in February 2025. Due to overwhelming demand all UK and Ireland dates have already sold out and details of further legs in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia will be announced in the coming weeks.

SEETHER ‘Judas Mind’ (Single) ‘The Surface Seems So Far’ (album out September 20)

Rock music stalwarts Seether are set to unleash their ninth studio album, The Surface Seems So Far, this fall, continuing their legacy as champions of raw emotion in a landscape dominated by fleeting trends and manufactured sounds. The first single off the unapologetically aggressive 11-track collection, due out September 20th via Fantasy Records, is the blistering album opener ‘Judas Mind’ – to listen click here: https://found.ee/TheSurfaceSeemsSoFar

Watch the official lyric video here: https://found.ee/SeetherJudasMindYT

“‘Judas Mind’ is a song about reaching an understanding that there are bad actors in our lives that are trying to force an outcome for us that we don’t see as our destiny,” shares frontman and songwriter Shaun Morgan. “It’s about rising up against people who have a vision for you that you don’t share.”

Known for their enduring anthems like “Broken,” “Fake It” and “Words as Weapons,” Seether returns with The Surface Seems So Far, showcasing their trademark blend of aggression and introspection. The track list for the new album – the follow-up to 2020’s Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum, which boasted three No. 1 hits – sets the tone for an honest and exhilarating journey through themes of melancholy (“Regret”), self-reflection (“Same Mistakes”), and raw emotion (“Dead on the Vine”), with catchy hooks and driving bombast emphasizing its many twists and turns. Adding to Seether’s impressive catalog, Morgan and his bandmates – Dale Stewart (bass), John Humphrey (drums), and Corey Lowery (guitar) – sound alternately confident and confessional, full of vitriol and vulnerability throughout The Surface Seems So Far, which Morgan produced with veteran producer Matt Hyde (Deftones, Slayer) as engineer and mixer. Full album track list below. The Surface Seems So Far is available now to pre-order on vinyl and CD and pre-save on DSPs here: https://found.ee/TheSurfaceSeemsSoFar

With five gold and platinum albums and two dozen Billboard Rock Airplay Top 10 hits including 20 No. 1s at U.S. radio throughout a career spanning over two decades, Seether is as vibrant and relevant as ever. Hailing from South Africa, Shaun Morgan proudly draws inspiration from his grunge and hard rock roots, crafting a unique sonic identity that propelled the band’s Gold-certified American debut and continues to resonate deeply with fans worldwide. The rock quartet, who also founded the annual Rise Above Fest for nearly ten years to raise awareness for suicide prevention and mental illness, remains a beacon of integrity on The Surface Seems So Far, which promises to captivate both loyal fans and newcomers alike with its blend of memorable hooks, driving rhythms, and unapologetic rock spirit.

KATANKIN “Stand Up Child’ (Single)

“Stand up child” is the latest enchanting single from Melbourne indie-folk singer-songwriter Katankin, and the second from her upcoming debut album.  Like a Coen Brothers film, but without the black comedy and ultraviolence, it nevertheless includes liberal sprinklings of darkness, alongside generous helpings of hope and a deep and abiding humanity, all served atop a bed of something undeniably sweet.  A balm for what ails you.

STREAM  HERE

Track credits:
Written, arranged, performed and produced by Katankin (vocals, guitar) with Esther Henderson (violin, viola) Philip Rex (double bass) Felix Bloxsom (drums, percussion)

Katankin is the solo moniker of Melbourne indie-folk singer-songwriter and producer, Helen Catanchin. Born of Russian and Romanian migrant parents, and with a difficult, often harrowing family history, Katankin’s music is nevertheless an ode and testament to love, faith, and ultimately, hope.

With her achingly pure and expressive voice, and poetic writing rich with imagery, she unflinchingly plumbs the darkest depths of the human condition – wading through despair, loathing, fear, rage, and revenge, and then soaring to its greatest, sun-drenched heights.

Katankin released her self-produced debut EP “The quiet shimmer of the world” in December 2022. It attracted extensive national radio airplay and was nominated for “Best Folk Work 2023” by Music Victoria.

THE BEATNIK PREACHERS ‘G.A.S.’ (Single)

In 1968, anthropologist W.E.H. Stanner talked about the “cult of forge@ulness” practiced on a national scale in Australia, which he termed “the Great Australian Silence”- where Australians do not just fail to acknowledge the atrocities of the past, but choose to not think about them at all, to the point of forgetIng that these events ever happened.” https://australian.museum/learn/first-nations/unsettled/healing-nations/the-great-australian-silence

In their title track from the upcoming 2nd album the Beatnik Preachers pull together all the textures possible from the sextet in a mesmerising and emotive reflection on the history of Colonial Settlement in Australia.

The Great Australian Silence (G.A.S.) is a poignant reminder that the conBnent was indeed invaded and land stolen from the indigenous first-nations people and how pinnacle the acknowledgement of this is in creating a true unification for the relatively young nation. STREAM HERE

ALANNA & ALICIA ‘Waiting In The Wings’ (Single)

Waiting in the Wings is a heartfelt tribute to musicians and the loss of the live music scene during lockdown. Andy Baylor sent me the music and I wrote a wistful lament expressing my gratitude for our musical community, poignant reflections on a changed world and my hopes for recovery. (Alanna) STREAM  HERE

Melbourne twin sister singer songwriters, Alanna and Alicia, are excited to release the latest song from  their fifth original album, ‘Heart Song Listen,’ produced with the support of a Creative Victoria Music Works grant. Alanna and Alicia captivate audiences wherever they play with their original folky/jazz/ roots songs, their sweet harmonies and twin banter.

Both are gifted songwriters who have won awards at national level, including Best New Talent at Port Fairy Folk Festival earlier in their career. Their lyrics, equal parts heart and humour, sparkle with an original, intimate voice as they explore universal and personal issues. As identical twins, their rich, intuitive vocal blend, creates the magical close harmonies unique to siblings.

On their much anticipated fifth album, ‘Heart Song Listen,’ they sing about global issues such as experiences in lockdown, the effects of global warming and sea level rise, as well as personal, universal songs about their grandmother’s battle with dementia and the emotional experience of miscarriage, contrasting with upbeat, lighter songs such as the vibrant, Everybody Dances in New Orleans, the quirky, uptempo tune, The Teetotaller, and the whimsical title song, Heart Song Listen.

Alanna and Alicia’s band features the fine talents of Damien Neil, guitar, Silas Palmer, violin and piano, Sarah Busuttil, violin, and for the album, several brilliant guest musicians including, Robbie Melville, electric guitar, Steve Grant, cornet and double bass, Matiss Schubert, mandolin, Ian Smith, drums and washboard, Mark Elton, Phillip Rex, both double bass, Jonathan Hunt, clarinet, Sam O’Halloran, guitar, Max Teakle, piano and Alicie Hurford, cello.  Andy Baylor collaborated with Alanna by writing and playing the music for the wistful track, ‘Waiting in the Wings,’ while Alanna wrote the lyrics. Ben Henley, climate scientist and Alicia’s husband, collaborated with Alicia to write ‘Sing for Tuvalu,’ after their trip to the Pacific Islands.

Alanna and Alicia have played at many festivals including the National, Port Fairy, Blue Mountains, Kangaroo Valley, Cobargo, Fairbridge, Maldon, Dorrigo, Illawarra, Brunswick, Woodford and Yackandandah, as well as folk clubs such as Fairlight Folk, the Troubadour, Woy Woy, Humph Hall, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and the Shack.

In 2015 they went to the US where they played at the Folk Alliance International Conference in Kansas City.

RADICAL SON ‘Bilambiyal (The Learning)’ (Album out now)

A stirring and powerful celebration of cultural connection alongside masterful performances, Kamilaroi and Tongan artist Radical Son has unveiled his sophomore album Bilambiyal (The Learning), out now via Wantok Musik. Boasting 13 tracks that swell with dynamic meaning and gripping arrangements, Bilambiyal (The Learning) also offers a deeply powerful statement of devotion to country, armed with harmonious traditional and modern sonic hues.

Releasing via Wantok Musik, and following on from his debut release Cause ‘N Affect, Bilambiyal (The Learning) was also crafted alongside a powerhouse team, including Full Circle Audio, Marcus Longfoot, Andy Robinson, David Bridie, Frank Yamma, Emma Donovan and many more lending their magic to the end result. Heralded by its lead singles Elder, Until You Call My Name, and Yuluwirri Wandabaa (The Rainbow Dreaming), Bilambiyal (The Learning) delves deep into Radical Son’s passion and advocacy for culture and connection in the modern age alongside themes of reflection, growth and, ultimately, learning. “I remember how much it meant to me to finally have a voice,” shares Radical Son of his new album. “I am so grateful to be releasing our album Bilambiyal” (The Learning). I am very proud of this work, and I am so grateful to those who have collaborated with me to bring it to life. I believe we have created a work that we can all be proud of. I absolutely love the songs on this album, and I know you will too. Even though I wish I’d had a stronger connection to Culture and Country. Even though there was a real disconnect and Culture and Country was not something I had a deep understanding of, still so much of my music is about my mob, my culture, my heritage. With almost 20 years now as an artist, I’ve stayed true to the game. I’ve stayed true to my mob. I’ve stayed true to myself. I really do hope that that message comes through in my songs.”

Opening with the starkly intimate Elder Reprise, Radical Son instantly conjures goosebumps as his almighty vocals soar, akin to standing on a mountaintop proclaiming: “I wish to be an Elder”. A short yet instantly gripping introduction to the power lying in wait throughout Bilambiyal (The Learning), Elder Reprise transitions seamlessly into How Long Must I Wait, a warm blend of soul and urgency, followed by the glowing ambience and captivating vocals lying in wait on All My Life. From a magnetic reflection on gratitude (Until You Call My Name) to a striking spoken word interlude (Cultural Contract), Bilambiyal (The Learning) rises to even greater heights via the commanding Elder; a spellbinding outing that also pays tribute to Radical Son’s cultural legacy seeking to inspire potential future Elders of this land. And journeying between elements of reggae (the buoyant Only One Life), moody and glossy ambience laden with vulnerability (The Learning (Bilambiyal), aka the album’s hypnotic title track), and potent lyricism fused with driving delivery (Yuluwirri Wandabaa (The Rainbow Dreaming) featuring Emma Donovan and Frank Yamma), Bilambiyal (The Learning) closes out with heady swoon (Dhuwan Baraay Yuligi), another haunting spoken word interlude (The Same Game), sleek soul complete with intermittent strings and layered harmonies (A Golden Age), and, ultimately, a track that simultaneously dazzles with Radical Son’s honeyed delivery and potent yet sparse instrumentation on The Fall. Declaring “I’m looking for a change, I’m ready for a change”, The Fall closes Bilambiyal (The Learning) on a pensive yet uplifting note, showcasing Radical Son’s stunning craftsmanship alongside his own personal and creative learning, as well as his unwavering connection to culture and country.

One of the most compelling artists in the Australian cultural scene, Radical Son, the son of an Aboriginal woman and Tongan man, channels his experiences from his past into immense power and resolve, with his trademark sound pulsing with the urgency of hip hop and emotionally charged soul. A festival favourite, cemented by his show-stopping cover of his mentor Uncle Archie Roach’s Walking Into Doors in 2022, Radical Son has performed to standing ovations at Bluesfest, St Kilda Festival, VIVID, the AFL Dreamtime 2022 game, and the official Uncle Archie Roach memorial in Melbourne and Sydney.

A highly skilled concert artist, with performances alongside classical ensembles and high-profile collaborations under his belt, Radical Son’s artistry also expands to film and TV, with credits including Defining Moments, a six-part NITV documentary exploring life-defining experiences, and theatre work, including the lead role of Pemulwuy in I am Eora at the 2012 Sydney Festival.

Studying as a musician at The Eora Centre for Visual and Performing Arts in Redfern, as well completing a Bachelor of Music from Newcastle Conservatorium, Radical Son’s creative prowess and steadfast substance is only matched by his otherworldly stage presence that repeatedly transfixes; and this fact is only set to heighten with an upcoming performance in later this month as part of QPAC’s Warriors Concert for 2024’s Clancestry Festival in Brisbane armed with Bilambiyal (The Learning).

Bilambiyal (The Learning) is out now, via Wantok Musik. Stream: BILAMBIYAL (THE LEARNING)

KEELAN MAK ’Straight With Me’ (Single) ‘Boy’s In Love’ (EP out Oct 30)

Following the much-anticipated return of Melbourne/Naarm’s Keelan Mak with the melancholic and introspective single ‘Naked Eye’ – co-written with Troye Sivan, Leland and Vetta Borne – the talented queer artist has announced his second EP Boy’s In Love is due for release Friday, October 30 via [PIAS] Australia.

This upcoming EP promises to further showcase Mak’s distinctive blend of heartfelt lyrics and evocative melodies. The new instalment is a confident pivot from Mak’s previous woes; Boy’s In Love is an expression of sex, love, queerness, and youthful embrace. No longer is the club a place to cry.

With the announce of the forthcoming EP comes his second offering ‘Straight With Me’, which premiered on triple j’s Home & Hosed – co-written and produced with Lucy Blomklamp (Stevan, Ninajirachi, Becca Hatch, KIAN, Eliott, PRICIE, B.Wise and Miiesha). After listening to a lot of Cascada and DJ Sammy, Keelan went in to a writing session with Lucy and the track was born.

LISTEN TO ‘STRAIGHT WITH ME’ HERE

Keelan comments, “Straight With Me is about a queer canon event of sorts. I’m one of the unlucky ones who have fallen into the trap of a straight male gaze (some also call that lucky, each to their own). This track is kind of unserious but also so truthful. I’m past the point of caring about that kind of thing now but it’s still incredibly relatable for queer people.”

JEX LOPEZ (Self Tiled Album)

Like dark chocolate with glistening caramel pouring from its beating heart, this genre defying album takes its audience on a sonic journey across the seas spotted by characters from vaudeville, fairy tale and Jex’s colourful past.

Depth and passion pouring from its beating heart, this genre defying album takes its audience on a sonic journey across the seas spotted by characters from vaudeville, fairy tale and Jex’s colourful past. Lopez’s skillful piano and haunting voice with a touch of operatic blues and a dose of Latin Diva is an evocative cry for justice and healing where we could easily despair.

“These songs are the culmination of a life of travel, a life of engaging in social justice movements, art and a journey with my own mental and emotional struggles.
“There are songs that honour my Portuguese Indian heritage and others that honour key historical figures like Chilean revolutionary musician Victor Jara and the Afro Cuban clown Chocolat. I love history, myth and inspirational stories of bravery.

“They motivate me to connect with the world, to strive to do these stories justice through song.”

BLUSHER ‘Overglow’ (Single)

Hot on the heels of the announcement of their debut Australian headline shows, today, Australian three-piece Blusher release new single ‘Overglow’. A buzzy, sparkling crush confession, the song is full of the fizzy excitement and energy you carry around with you when you’re completely obsessed with someone. Starting in Melbourne, the song was finished whilst the band were on tour in the US, then mixed in London, whilst the visualiser was shot in Tokyo.

Say Blusher of the track: “We channelled the feeling of our first crushes, a shimmering Tokyo skyline, and Britney Spears riding a motorbike through the sky in the Toxic video.

It’s done a whole lap of the world with us, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it. We hope it leaves people radiating with energy and inspires someone to yell their crush confession over the music on the dancefloor.”

Having supported Tove Lo, Aurora and The Rions in Australia, and Dadi Freyr in the UK, Europe and North America, the band are playing their long-awaited debut headline shows in Australia later this year, with their debut London headline show happening this week.

The band recently appeared in Leicester Square for London Pride, and at BST Hyde Park headlined by Kylie Minogue, whilst later this month are festival dates including Latitude Festival and pop-up DJ sets around London.

‘Overglow’ follows on from recent singles ’24 Hours in Paris’, ‘Accelerator’ and ‘Rave Angel’, which are the first taste of new music for the trio since the release of their debut EP Should We Go Dance? in mid 2023.

In the past 12 months Blusher have been named as one of Spotify’s RADAR artists, showcased at The Great Escape UK and SXSW Sydney.

About Blusher:

In Blusher’s metaphorical teen rom-com of a band, all three members are the leads. They share vocals on their songs and swap instruments during the live shows. They all produce and write together, utilising their individual experiences cutting their teeth as solo artists before forming the band. Unfiltered lyricism peppered over dreamy synths and thick baselines lands the Blusher sound somewhere between late-night solitude and a 2am dance floor. Since Blusher launched into action at BIGSOUND in 2022, the trio are on track to become a staple amongst the Australian pop landscape. The trio have garnered support from the likes of triple j, iHeartRadio Australia, People Magazine, Vogue Australia, RUSSH Magazine and DORK Magazine.

KEEGAN McINROE “Dusty Passports and Empty Beds” (Title track from album)

When the world went into lockdown in the spring of 2020, Texas songwriter and international troubadour Keegan McInroe holed up at his mother’s home in Dublin, TX, to ride out whatever was to come with his family. After being in steady motion for ten years, the sudden halt was jarring. Combined with the uncertainties surrounding the turning upside down of life as everyone knew it, McInroe was left with some serious internal churning to process and move through.

But, the artist is somewhat fortunate when faced with life’s varied stresses, sadnesses, and difficulties. From the ugly, unpleasant, and potentially damaging, something beautiful and healing can be birthed. This form of self-therapy-through-creation worked itself out in the writing of the eight original songs that became McInroe’s seventh studio album Dusty Passports and Empty Beds.

With occasional nods to the direct traumas and timeframes that gave them form — the album’s title track, for instance, “Dusty Passports and Empty Beds” (track 3), begins, “If hindsight is 20/20, I hope to never look back again….” — the songs mostly transcend their particular histories, touching on overarching human themes of death, grief, living well, being present, trying to find one’s place, and coping with a world that all-too-often (forever? always?) seems beyond comprehension or salvation.

A ninth song, a fairly faithful rendition of John Prine’s “Lonesome Friends of Science” (track 2), in addition to being thematically significant, underscores the impact of the great American songwriter’s death on April 7, 2020, at the outset of the pandemic — “John’s Songs” (track 8) is a touching, folksy retelling of McInroe’s learning of Prine’s passing — as well as the power and desired persistence of John’s music to Keegan’s own process of healing during these days.

Recorded at 7013 Sound in Fort Worth, TX, with Grant Wilborn (co-producer, engineer, mixing, mastering) behind the controls, McInroe has gathered another venerable ensemble of fellow Fort Worthian musical conjurers with Clint Kirby (drums), Aden Bubeck (bass), Patrick Smith (bass), Matt Tedder (guitar), Gary Grammer (harmonica), Chris Watson (piano, organ, keys), Jeff Dazey (saxophone), Dirt Stinnett (fiddle, mandolin, gut string), Hannah Owens (vocal), and Morris Holdahl (vocal) all contributing mightily in breathing life into the rootsy, country-tinged Americana of Dusty Passports and Empty Beds.

Those familiar with McInroe’s prior work might note that Dusty Passports and Empty Beds leans more towards the Kristoffersonian side of influence than the Waitsian, perhaps a result of the long and open days, weeks, and months that were stretched out over during the writing process, everything slowed way down, veiled in a slight melancholy, sitting in a quiet room, wearing a stubborn grin, strumming a guitar, counting blessings, hoping for the best.
