MARCEL BORRACK’S TD BAND ‘Baseball’ (Single)

The breezy Nihon inspired instrumental single “Baseball” from Marcel Borrack’s TD Band is out now through Cheersquad Records and Tapes. click to stream here

Following on from his acclaimed 2023 album The Telecaster Diaries, Marcel Borrack and his TD band featuring Andy Pap on bass (Ron Peno & The Superstitions), Al Barden on drums (Frente, Kylie Auldist) and Peter (Sweet) Carolane on the organ and percussion, lean into sounds echoing ancient feudal Japan and add that to their already rich mix of easy listening funk, soul and bossa nova grooves.

On “Baseball” The TD Band paint in fine detailed sometsuke (blue and whiite) as Borrack delivers an oriental guitar motif that is so easy on the aural palate it attaches itself most unassumingly until you realise you are still hearing echoes of it long after your first encounter.

Coming to notice first via the buzzy jangle of his late 2000’s outfit Minibikes, Borrack has had a diverse career in music. Fascinated and inspired by broad influences, he has always challenged himself to keep developing new skills in technology and production, as well as writing and performing in different contexts.

TD Band will launch “Baseball” with a special free entry show at The Beast in East Brunswick on Saturday November 2nd. The band will be playing two sets of instrumental music taken from both The Telecaster Diaries LP and exclusive instrumental selections from the band’s yet to be announced follow up album.

WE MAVERICKS ‘Heart of Silver’ (album)

One of Australia’s newest and most intriguing folk/country acts, We Mavericks’ new album Heart of Silver leaves no doubt about this duo’s songwriting credentials. Full of their trademark dynamism, it’s a perfect mix of country heartstrings and folk-song depth.

A smooth-sounding journey across rough emotional ground, it explores how a heart might become a beautiful thing even if it has been “tarnished by time”. Every song is both easy-listening and thought-provoking. Only their second album, it proves their rare ability to write songs from the heart with hooks you will whistle as you let your mind wander; The whole album is a journey from vulnerable lyrics & strong harmonies right through to driving mandolin & fiddle leading the band.

The title track sings “it’s a good-luck, cold, hard, precious thing” – Victoria Vigenser’s penchant for turning cliches into meaningful metaphors combines beautifully with Lindsay Martin’s extraordinary ability to pull a swathe of emotions out of one set of strings. Add the rhythm powerhouse that is Julia Day on drums and bass, plus beautiful string sections comprising cellists Rachel Johnston and Trent Arkleysmith and this album is certain to please ears across the genres.

Initially described as a folk act, their first singles “All This Noise” featured on Country Music TV, “Hold Me” featured on ABC Country’s GRASSROOTS and title track “Heart of Silver” enjoyed the spotlight on ABC’s premier country program, Saturday Night Country with Beccy Cole. The duo are leaning easily into some country sounds- The only catch is, their songs have a depth of feeling usually reserved for travelling troubadours and folksingers.

With their soulful vocals, effortless strings and driving rhythms, the duo have been on a steep rise to countless festival billings and shows at home and abroad, amounting accolades such as Australia’s Troubadour Award, nominations for New Zealand’s “Best Folk Artist” and “Artist of the Year” in the Australian Folk Music Awards, plus selection as Spotlight Showcase Artists at Folk Alliance International.

Currently touring throughout Australia & the UK and supported by Creative Australia, We Mavericks will be bringing Heart of Silver to Europe for a 20 show tour in January & February 2025.

“Heart of Silver” is available exclusively via We Mavericks’ official website, and digitally via Bandcamp. Although they have several singles off the album available on streaming platforms, the duo have chosen to reserve the bulk of their new album for their fans, currently available only as a direct-to-customer download or physical merchandise.

THE LAST MARTYR ‘Requiem’ (EP)

Naarm/Melbourne-based metal band The Last Martyr have today revealed their zealous EP ‘Requiem’ – produced and mixed by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, Days Like These). Order Vinyl / Merch Packages – HERE

‘Requiem’ is seven tracks of subversive, soul-stirring metal led by the versatile vocals of lead singer Monica Strut as she chronicles the EPs evolving narrative of apocalypse, destruction and disrespect of Mother Nature. Instrumentally, the EP bounces between soaring, spacious choruses and rhythmically dense, action-packed riffs, creating an ambitious and thematic body of work. Click to stream ‘Requiem’

Monica explains the inspiration behind the EP: “The ‘Requiem’ EP is about the human species’ journey towards, throughout and after the apocalypse. It touches on themes of denial, destruction, control, fear, love and more. Each song stands alone with its own story but is brought together by this overarching theme. As the EP commences with ‘Xenox’, we’re in a state of denial, looking away and partying towards our impending doom. This leads into ‘Antidote’, where we begin to acknowledge the darkness of the world, leaning on love to get through. By the time we reach the title track, we’re confronted by a fierce battle between Mother Nature and humankind. Man loses and is forced to confront mortality. This is when ‘The Nihilist’ takes place, as we want something – anything bigger than ourselves to believe in. ‘Critical Mass’ is the crossroads before ‘Burn It Down’ marks the end of the world, reflecting our disregard for each other, especially women, which mirrors our disrespect for Mother Nature. Finally, we end with ‘Venus Retrograde’, the most painful song on the record about separation.”

The band will perform two headline shows at Naarm/Melbourne’s Workers Club and Eora/Sydney’s Burdekin Hotel to accompany the release. This continues on from sharing the stage with the likes of Black Veil Brides (USA), Dayseeker (USA), Story of the Year (USA), Hanabie. (JPN), Paledusk (JPN), The Getaway Plan and RedHook. They have also performed at festivals such as UNIFY Off The Record (2023), Froth & Fury (2022), BIGSOUND (2022), Halloween Hysteria (2022) and UNIFY Gathering (2022).

Previous releases have been widely embraced by Spotify, Apple Music, triple j and triple j Unearthed, where the band were triple j Unearthed’s ‘Feature Artist’ (2021). In the blogosphere, their tracks have been supported by the likes of Ghost Cult Mag (USA), The Music, NME, HEAVY Mag, Everblack Media, Wall Of Sound and Metal Injection.

HANNAH ‘Pages’ (EP)

Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Hannah marks an exciting new chapter today with her emotionally dynamic debut EP, Pages. This self-produced collection showcases Hannah’s raw storytelling and emotive vocals, offering listeners a clear indication of the brilliance that lies ahead.

Pages delves into themes of love, anxiety, burnout, and self-discovery, with each track representing a page from Hannah’s diary. The EP invites listeners to explore the most intimate moments of her journey over the past five years, captured through her heartfelt lyrics and powerful sound.LISTEN

Cerulean, the EP’s focus track, is an exhilarating dive into the early stages of falling in love. Released ahead of the EP, it gave listeners a glimpse of the artistry to come. The song captures both the excitement and vulnerability of giving your heart to someone new, with Hannah’s lyrics expressing the thrill and fear of love. “The hook line of the chorus, ‘Tell me it’s not a daydream,’ reflects that juxtaposition of feeling like you’re living in a dream, but also being a little scared it’s not real,” says Hannah. Musically, Cerulean blends upbeat indie pop-rock with Hannah’s powerful vocals, setting the tone for the EP’s emotionally diverse sound.

Collaborating with a talented team of musicians—Sam Bertolone (drums), Josh Pineda (electric guitar), Angus Holmes, and Josh Holt (bass)—and recorded at Alchemix Studios in West End, QLD, Pages is a culmination of Hannah’s growth as both a songwriter and producer. The EP offers a range of sonic experiences, from energetic pop-rock to intimate piano ballads, all tied together by her compelling voice and honest lyrics.

“I’ve always believed that music has the power to heal and connect”, Hannah reflects. “With Pages, I wanted to create something raw and real, but also hopeful. These songs are snapshots of my own experiences, and my hope is that listeners find themselves in these moments too, and come away feeling a little less alone.”

Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including Miley Cyrus’s Endless Summer Vacation and songwriters like Sara Bareilles and Taylor Swift, Hannah crafted an EP that’s equal parts fun and reflective. Hannah’s ‘Pages’ is on all major streaming platforms now.

BROKEN WAVES ‘Do You Understand?’ (Single)

Indie-rock/pop band, Broken Waves, are back with their electrifying new single, Do You Understand?. Known for their infectious rhythms and energetic live performances, the 5-piece band takes a bold step with their latest track, addressing the toxic masculinity that’s dominating social media, while infusing their signature blend of funk and indie rock.

Do You Understand? was born out of the band’s frustration with the rise of misogyny in online spaces and the lack of healthy male role models for the younger generation. The track poses the question: “If not this, then what?” and challenges listeners to reflect on the state of modern masculinity. Lead guitarist Will comments, “We were finding ourselves trapped in this contrast of being told to ignore toxic influencers preaching backwards ideas, while also asking, ‘Who are the real role models that young men need today?’”

Musically, Do You Understand? is the furthest Broken Waves have ventured into the funk territory, delivering what the band describes as “spicy indie-funk.” The song’s bombastic production, shaped alongside engineer James Brown at Wizard Tone Studios, captures the band’s experimental edge and fearless approach to modern pop music. Drawing inspiration from acts like Foals and The 1975, Broken Waves have crafted a track that balances a serious message with infectious, feel-good vibes.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND? LISTEN

“Lyrically, we wanted to use satire to drive the point home,” the band shares. With biting lines like “born to slay, forced to serve” and “bite down on that red pill baby, aren’t you brave,” the song is both thought-provoking and playful, inviting listeners to engage with its message on multiple levels.

Broken Waves have been steadily building their presence since bursting onto the Adelaide indie scene in 2020. With 11 releases under their belt, including their debut EP, the band is only gaining momentum. Their single launch at Jive promises to be an unforgettable night, kicking off what they’ve called a “season of new material.”

‘Do You Understand?’ is on all major streaming platforms now.

LUCIAN RICE ‘Right Now, Forever’ (EP)

Aotearoa/New Zealand-born singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Lucian Rice unveils his debut EP, right now, forever. Featuring six tracks that blend elements of nu-gaze, dream pop, and alternative rock, right now, forever, showcases Lucian’s talent for capturing the fleeting essence of life’s moments in sound.

Reflecting on the EP, Lucian shares, “It feels like the end of the beginning—not quite a ‘goodbye’ to my youth but a recognition that things change. The whole concept is about living in the present, cherishing today because it’s the only thing that will be ‘forever’. Each song represents a moment I was trying to make sense of, and now they’re memories stitched together into something new.”

Equally informed by the melodic sensibilities of 1960s top 40 songwriting, the grit of 1990s college, and the brightly-rendered joy of 2010s pop,  right now, forever is a sonic diary of the memories and daydreams that have rattled around in Lucian’s head as he battles to ground himself in the now and cherish the day. “Each of these songs was a life lesson,” he continues. “They all represent how I felt about something at a certain moment. In a sense, it’s all the same theme, but there was time between when I wrote them, so my feelings changed.”

right now, forever was recorded over the past few years, collaborating with a tight-knit circle of friends and creative partners, including long-time collaborator Tom Verberne. The EP was mixed by Jonathan Gilmore (Nothing But Thieves, The 1975, Carly Rae Jepsen) in London, adding another layer of polished depth to Lucian’s raw and emotive sound.

Having worked alongside talents like Nick Ward, carwash, and Molly Payton, Lucian Rice is set to make a lasting impact on the global music scene. With right now, forever, he steps into the spotlight as a dynamic artist and producer, ready for what comes next.

NATHAN LAMONT ‘Name On It’ (Single)

Off the back of a stellar debut performance at Deni Ute Muster, Nathan Lamont today drops an amped up new banger titled ‘Name on It’.

Jam-packed with the singer-songwriter’s trademark swagger, ‘Name on It’ is full of good vibes. “Every little love song / And everything I can’t resist / Girl it’s got your name on it,” he croons, like a love drunk Romeo falling head over heels.

“I wanted to highlight how love can completely upturn and transform a person’s outlook on life for the better, filling spaces we never knew were empty,” Nathan explains. When teamed up with co-writer and producer, Alex Mather, the pair have no trouble crafting loved up bops. “Alex and I have spent a lot of time in the studio together recording and songwriting, and we have many shared values and experiences when it comes to life and love.”

From the beginning drum roll to Nathan’s closing vocal runs, ‘Name On It’ demands the unwavering attention of any die hard contemporary country fan. Country music giant, Keith Urban – who maintains correspondence with Nathan – praised the singer’s latest work, encouraging him to “keep it coming”.

The dynamic vocals and the song’s lively tone make it a certifiable hit, blending contemporary country charm with a polished, ‘road tripping’ vibe. Recorded between Nashville and Australia, the instrumentation is world class, and the vocals are flawless – with the duo spending over 8 hours dialling in the hooks to perfection.

Nathan even brought his real-life muse on set for the song’s video clip. “I was excited to feature my wife in this project. She’s been the biggest source of inspiration behind my song writing and has been on the sidelines supporting me since day one, so to have the opportunity to work with her so closely on something I love has only brought us even closer together.”

With a fresh and engaging style, the singer-songwriter has notched up close to 1 million streams. His previous hit, ‘I’m Calling Shotgun’, garnered additions to numerous Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists, while cruising into the #9 spot on the AMRAP regional airplay chart and #24 on the CountryTown Hot 50 airplay chart.

With dates in the calendar at the upcoming Denman Food and Wine Festival, A Night in Nashville in Orange and Tamworth Country Music Festival, Nathan is stoked to be bringing his dynamic performance to the stage. He’s in fine form having just played a sold-out show in his hometown of Wagga Wagga and giving an unforgettable debut performance at the iconic Deni Ute Muster.

Featuring highly contagious rhythm and memorable hooks, ‘Name On It’ offers an easy listening experience that’s perfect for any playlist celebrating newfound love, sunlit days and good times.

GORDI ‘Lunch At Dune’ (Single) (EP out Nov 15)

Australian singer-songwriter Gordi turns a page to open a new chapter in her esteemed musical journey, revealing a collaboration with Mercury-prize winning Irish singer-songwriter Bridie Monds-Watson aka SOAK, on ‘Lunch At Dune’.

Accompanied by a cinematic video shot around Malahide in Ireland, the new single comes with the announcement of the Lunch At Dune EP, to be released on November 15.  A run of intimate shows across Australia UK/Europe that same month will help initiate fans into Sophie Payten’s new sonic sphere.

“As a longtime fan of Gordi I was so hyped when she reached out to ask me to sing on this track. Something I’ve always found mesmerising about her work is that each song feels like its own little universe. I think ‘Lunch at Dune’ is a great example of this, a world of its own. I was less hyped when Sophie asked me to jump in the freezing Irish sea at the start of winter for the video but I obliged and have since returned to my normal skin tone.” -Bridie Monds-Watson

Personal narratives converge on ‘Lunch at Dune’, which sees Gordi and SOAK’s vocals cascading into each other in a sonic trance that builds and expands, rises up and diverges out like a protective forcefield around only those who matter. A gift of a song, set against a backdrop of reversing pianos, palpitating plucked guitars, swirling falsetto harmonies and a dreamy percussive groove, Gordi and SOAK sound both wounded and healing at once, lost and certain. Written during the pandemic, ‘Lunch At Dune’ details everything going to hell.

“The song is about feeling like there is something insurmountable in front of you and the only way through is perspective. In ‘Lunch At Dune’, I’m trying to give that perspective to someone I love,” Gordi offers.

The duo also enlisted the help of a number of well-known North Carolina local musicians on the track: Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan; acclaimed gospel and pedal steel artist DeShawn Hickman; and touring musician for Waxahatchee and Tallest Man, Yan Westerlund.

Co-directed by Madeleine Purdy and Ashleigh Pepper, the official video’s breadcrumb trail narrative highlights opposing forces through its beautifully shot metaphorical visual fable. The striking Irish landscape (the piece was filmed around Kilamshogue Passage Tomb, Howth and Malahide) is framed by an imaginative and experimental approach to editing and story-telling.

KING IBIS ‘Did You Dim The Lights’ (Single)

Boorloo/Perth-based indie-rock band King Ibis have returned with their smoky single ‘Did You Dim The Lights’ – produced and mixed by Andy Lawson at Debaser Studios (Noah Dillon, Death By Denim, Mitch Santiago).

‘Did You Dim The Lights’ unfolds into a sultry and energetic mist, carried by pulsing bass lines that ripple beneath shimmering guitar licks. Alluring Italian phrases heighten the electric anticipation of the melody, while the track exhales a seductive spirit, infused with indie-rock sensibilities.

Lead singer Nadene Burchell talks about the inspiration behind ‘Did You Dim The Lights’: “I wrote this song after moving through a deeply confusing relationship dynamic. It was inspired by the 1930s play ‘Gaslight’, in which a husband changes the intensity of the gas lights in their home to manipulate his wife into thinking she is going crazy and can’t trust herself. In contrast to the dark themes, the second verse was just fun. I spent a long time learning Italian throughout the relationship, and I wanted to slip it in there somewhere. It came out sounding like Cardi B for that one line, which we thought was pretty funny. It was a dark time in my life, but hey, we got a cool song out of it!”

In the live arena, the band performed an opening slot for Coldplay at Optus Stadium last year, along with performing their first Australian east coast tour this year, alongside acts such as Bootleg Rascal, Danté Knows and Sophian. They have also previously shared the stage with notable Aussie acts such as Thelma Plum, Tash Sultana, Spacey Jane, Jebediah, Dulcie, Sly Withers and Dear Sunday.

Previous releases have been widely embraced by Spotify, triple j, triple j Unearthed, Backseat Mafia (UK/AUS), The Music, Pilerats, Australian Music Scene and Eat This Music. They’ve also seen support from Australian community radio stations such as FBi Radio, SYN Media, 4ZZZ, 2XX FM and RTR FM. Their previous release ‘Watch My Mind Bend’ reached #5 on the AMRAP Regional Charts and ‘Touch’ was nominated for a WAM ‘Song Of The Year’ Award (2022).

CHEZ ‘Honey’ (Single)

Boorloo/Perth-based pop artist CHEZ has unveiled her intoxicating single ‘honeY’ – produced by the artist herself, Caleb Lenzo and Reece Lenzo (We The Kings, 44phantom, SK8).

‘honeY’ captivates with an alluring blend of golden textures, as trap percussion punctuates seductive grooves that intertwine effortlessly with darker undertones. The chorus introduces heavy bass hits, amplifying the tension before a brass-filled outro leaves a rich, ambered dew that draws into an intoxicating embrace.

CHEZ talks about the inspiration behind ‘honeY’: “‘honeY’ touches on my internal battles of self-doubt and low self-esteem when in a relationship. The way I view myself or see myself is, at the best of times – downright terrible. It’s those fun internal battles of, ugh, I’ve put on weight since I was 18; how could anyone find me attractive? But in those moments, you have someone who thinks you are perfect, despite my flaws. And most of the time, you think they’re lying or delusional. Sometimes our minds are our own worst enemy, so lyrically, I wanted this to be able to resonate with a vast majority, and sonically, I wanted the track to almost play a make-fun-of-yourself-esque vibe. You can cry and jiggle your body around at the same time, and I think that’s exactly what you need sometimes.”

In the live scene, CHEZ recently sold out her debut headline show three weeks before the performance date (200 tickets) and performed on Scene Queen’s Australian tour. She will be performing with Set It Off (USA) this November and has previously shared the stage with acts such as Against The Current (USA),  PVRIS (USA), Magnolia Park (USA) and Taylor Acorn (USA).

CHEZ’s previous releases have also seen extensive support from Spotify, Apple Music, triple j, triple j Unearthed, Alt Press (USA), idobi Radio (USA), Wall Of Sound, Music Feeds and Australian Music Scene. Her release ‘so good’ was also added to high rotation on SYN Media, along with receiving love from Radio Adelaide, Gove FM, RTR FM and other Australian community radio stations.

JK-47 ‘Blakt Out’ (Single)

NIMA award-winning rapper JK-47, a proud Bundjalung and South Sea Islander MC from Tweed Heads (Minyugmbal / Goodjinburra country), returns with his latest single, ‘BLAKT OUT’, following a first play on triple j Drive. This is the second release from his upcoming three-track EP ‘A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED’.  JK-47 is joined by his older brother Chiggz, a fellow member of the East Coast Brotherhood (ECB), who co-wrote the track with him.

‘BLAKT OUT’ is a celebration of good vibes and brotherhood. The track paints a vivid picture of cruising in JK’s first car, a ‘blakt out’ Holden, with music cranked up and the crew in the back. The track is not just about the joy of cruising but also reflects the close bond between JK-47 and Chiggz. Their connection comes through in the song’s energy and lyrics, reflecting the essence of feeling good and looking good with the mob by your side.

Speaking on the collaboration, JK-47 shared: “This song is about those moments when you feel on top of the world, riding around with the music blasting, your people in the back, and everything just feels right. Having my older brother Chiggz on the track makes it even more special—this one’s for the family.”

‘BLAKT OUT’ is the second instalment in JK-47’s new EP ‘A ROAD LESS TRAVELLED’, a personal and reflective body of work that follows his critically acclaimed album, ‘ReVision for ReGrowth’. His last project earned extensive praise from key outlets like RAGE, Acclaim Magazine, Purple Sneakers, and secured significant editorial playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music. His growth and evolution continue to captivate fans and critics alike, recently scoring an ARIA nomination for his Sun-Safety anthem.

Born Jacob Paulson, JK-47’s journey into Hip-Hop began at the age of 14. Drawing inspiration from legends like Tupac, Nipsey Hussle, and DMX, he quickly developed a passion for storytelling through music. Over the years, his talent has been recognised by triple j, where he was named Unearthed Artist of the Year (2020), and his album was featured as Album of the Week.

CHARLES MAIMAROSIA ‘Hote’ Hote’’ (Single)

A buoyant and breezy delight, capturing the vibrant spirit of voyaging, strength and determination, the immersive new single Hote’ Hote’ from Solomon Island-born, Melbourne-based singer, guitarist, panpipe player Charles Maimarosia also imparts a deep connection to culture, effortlessly fusing traditional elements with bright and contemporary production.

Hailing from the Solomon Islands, Charles Maimarosia channels “the deep connection I feel to my ancestors and their experiences when voyaging through the Pacific Islands” throughout his new track, with Hote’ Hote’ transporting you sonically to sunny shores and crystalline blue waters via ethereal instrumentation, warm melodies and Maimarosia’s powerful vocals, sung entirely in the Are’ Are’ language. Written by Maimarosia, with Andrew Robinson arranging the music chord progressions, Hote’ Hote’ is a charming meeting point for tradition and engaging songwriting; and it’s one that took on multiple forms before arriving at the end result, as Maimarosia reveals, “Hote’ Hote’ is organic, rhythmic, soulful, and deeply rooted in the Are’ Are’ traditional ‘parani o’o’ rhythm, which shares similarities with rhythms found in many other cultures around the world. None of those rhythms would have been realised without Andrew Robinson. He arranged the music chord progressions, and I layered the lyrics on top. If the words didn’t fit perfectly with the chords, we would try different ones until everything sat right, knowing that the words had to align with the context. For me, when I put Are’ Are’ lyrics in a song, I always make sure those words are true, make sense to ‘Are’Are’ people, and remain meaningful when translated into other languages, like English or Japanese. We’ve changed this song Hote’ Hote’ about three times already, and now we have this amazing version.”

Recorded, mixed and produced by Andrew Robinson, and mastered by Naomune Anzai, Hote’ Hote’ features Maimarosia playing acoustic guitar, auu (panpipes) and vocals, with friends also joining proceedings to add some extra sonic sparkle, with Natty Dolaiasi contributing spoken word, Ben Kaumanaki and James Kauhi’ona providing backing vocals, Paul Cartwright on bass, Phil Wales on electric guitar, and David Bridie and Cass Grant, Wantok Musik’s label manager, supported the group of creatives throughout the process. And teaming with the theme of voyaging beating at the core of Hote’ Hote’the accompanying music video, directed by Marcus Longfoot, also captures Maimarosia’s own personal journey from the Solomon Islands to Melbourne, with real life footage filmed both at home and abroad. “The concept of the video is centred around voyaging in the ocean to the islands, which resonates with my own journey from Pipisu Village to Melbourne,” shares Maimarosia. “I was shooting in the Melbourne city during winter, wearing shorts, which was quite an experience! I never imagined the video clip would turn out so well. The video was directed by Marcus Longfoot, with assistance from his team from RMIT media students: Rachel Kemp and Ruari Walsh. Natty provided spoken word contributions from Lau Malaita Islands, whose people we call ‘masters of the ocean.’ Natty D’s spoken word and footage was filmed in Honiara Solomon Islands, my homeland, by Dream Cast Studios’ Mr Collin Leafasia. Marcus is a talented filmmaker and musician who has worked with Radical Son, another amazing artist from the First Nations community. It was a collaborative effort, and I’m grateful for all the creative minds who helped bring the video to life.”

An award-winning performer and storyteller, Charles Maimarosia is renowned for being a musician of important custom knowledge, and an artist dedicated to cultural preservation. Growing up in the remote Pipisu village of Malaita, Maimarosia developed a profound interest in Are’ Are’ music at a young age after inheriting his first handmade coconut shell ukulele from his father, and witnessing ‘auu rerepi’ panpipe performances and Are’ Are’ drum ensembles as a child. Starting his musical journey performing amongst his community and communicating ancient songs of his ancestors with hand-made pan pipes, Maimarosia has since gone on to tour the globe for over a decade, including as the frontman, choreographer and songwriter of the acclaimed panpipe orchestra Narasirato, as well as representing Australia and Solomon Islands at the G20 Summit in India, and on stage at the likes of WOMADelaide, the Blue Mountains Music Festival, and the National Folk Festival. Since relocating to Melbourne in 2010 to focus on his solo career and signing to Wantok Musik, Maimarosia has released a debut solo album, 2016’s Are’Are, and received the Music Victoria Diaspora Award in 2022.

With his gaze now set on a follow up album set to release in 2025, Maimarosia is also primed to perform some of his captivating creations live with a string of shows in February (tickets on sale from https://charlesmaimarosia.com.au/), with plenty of new material to dazzle, while also celebrating storytelling and traditional and modern Are’ Are’ music.

“After receiving honest feedback from one of my best friends that my 8 songs were a little short on my first album, I’ve since created an instrumental piece that’s about 8 minutes long,” shares Maimarosia, “and my next album Hote’ Hote’ due to release early 2025 will have 12 songs which I think my audience will enjoy at my next shows and album tour in February 2025. I also always perform an instrumental piece, ‘Forgotten People’, dedicated to people living with disabilities, and one special song called ‘Nanaratana Tetemanu’ is dedicated to members of the LGBTQIA+ community. During a recent performance in Canberra, I was thrilled to see how many people knew my song ‘Meranitoro’ : ‘man from the bush’ by heart—it made me very happy.

“I want my audiences to know that I come from a remote village and that I’ll probably yarn a little bit on stage, share some stories, and make them laugh and reflect on their own life and journey while explaining each song,” adds Maimarosia. “Every time I’m on stage, I think of my mentor, and elder the late Donation Manu, an Are’ Are’ legend, and it reminds me that music is always here with us, before we are born and long after we are gone.”

“I hope that future generations of Are’ Are’ and other cultural people will be inspired by these stories, and that they too will work with others to do the same. I feel a sense of responsibility in bringing this story and emotion to life through music. We all depend on each other to grow, whether in music or in other goals we set our minds to achieve. Cultural preservation is one of my biggest goals, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far with both traditional and modern Are’ Are’ music.”

Hote’ Hote’ is out now via Wantok Musik.

DVRKWORLD ‘Sinking Ship’ (Single)

Dvrkworld, the emerging shoegaze/psych-rock band from Launceston, Tasmania, is thrilled to announce the release of their highly anticipated new single, ‘Sinking Ship.’ This single marks the fourth release this year, building up to the bands forthcoming and debut 7 track EP, being released through Psychedelic Salad Records in early 2025.

Sinking Ship delves into themes of disillusionment, anxiety, and self-doubt, capturing the emotional struggle of feeling overwhelmed and stuck in a cycle of inaction. With evocative lyrics and soundscapes, the song reflects a battle between overthinking and the longing for simplicity in moments of increased anxiety and numbness to life’s challenges.

The band, consisting of Mary Shannon (Meres) on vocals, Drew Farrant-Jayet on guitar, Shawn Arnold (Teens) on drums, and Ryan Unger (Murray Darling) on guitar, has crafted a sound that is both mesmerising and unique. Influenced by legendary acts like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, Dvrkworld continues to push the boundaries of their genre, delivering music that resonates deeply with their audience.

Within Sinking Ship, listeners will find lush soundscapes and melodies contrasted with the raw intensity of fuzzy guitars and intense rhythms, sonically reflecting a yearning for simplicity amid moments of chaos and sinking emotion.

“Sinking Ship” was written as an outlet to convey feelings of isolation and resignation. When withdrawing from the world and grappling with the weight of fears and uncertainties, the song’s lyrics are an attempt to connect and resonate with those who have experienced similar feelings of being adrift and disconnected.”

The single was recorded in the idyllic setting of Lilydale, Tasmania, by band members Mary, Drew, and Shawn, and Ryan with mixing by Hobart’s own Spiro Noutsatos of Silver Fleet Ships. Renowned Mikey Young, known for his involvement with Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control, brings his mastering expertise to the track.

Although Dvrkworld will not be performing live shows at this time due to travels in South America, the band is excited to reunite in early 2025 for the full release of their EP. They plan to celebrate with a series of live performances, sharing their latest work with fans and marking this significant milestone in their musical journey.

“Sinking Ship” will be available on all major streaming platforms on the 23rd of October. For more information on Dvrkworld, upcoming releases, and future shows, visit the Band’s Website or follow them on social media: Instagram, Facebook and Youtube.

MIA WRAY ‘Nice To Meet You’ (Single) (Album out March 14, 2025)

Sharing a title with the album, ‘Nice To Meet Me’ is the perfect scene-setter for the larger body of work, which viscerally details Mia’s journey of the past few years over the course of 12 new songs.

Co-written with G Flip and their producer Aidan Hogg, the single narrates the story of Mia ‘meeting’ her true self for the first time – the heart-breaking dissolution of a long-term relationship, coming to terms with being queer, and ultimately, whole-heartedly embracing and celebrating that self. These key themes also form the heart of Mia’s debut.

“This was the last song that was written. G Flip came back to Melbourne for Christmas, earlier this year. It was early January maybe, and they were like, “We want to set up a week of co-writes, do you want to do a couple of days?” It was with Aidan Hogg as well, who is their producer. I told them the story; I was with my partner and I met this girl. She was just the cherry on top, the final realisation that something was really knocking at the door for me. I needed to answer it.”

Watch the ‘Nice To Meet Me’ Lyric Video

“I remember telling them that when I broke up with my boyfriend, we literally had a house on a hill. It was my uncle’s place in Warrandyte. We were renting it. I remember a couple of days after the break-up, I’m trying to be there for him but also, for me, being there was very upsetting as well. You’re trying to be supportive, but you’re not helping because you’re a constant reminder of sadness. I remember being like, “I just need to pack some bags and go,” I remember kissing him for the last time — I knew it was the last time, that was very intense. There was a really long dirt road driveway in the middle of the bush; I remember seeing him in the rearview mirror, just standing outside the house on the hill.”

The Mia Wray effect has been real in recent years: it is an effect that immediately captures the attention of the listener, refusing to let go. Holding the listener in a warm embrace, is a voice that encompasses a beautiful maturity gained from experiences lived; for Mia Wray, music has been an avenue to discover more about herself as a human, as well as the artist she has always wanted to be.

hi, it’s nice to meet me is an introduction to the real Mia, to the artist herself. A striking pop record in the most contemporary of senses, hi, it’s nice to meet me encompasses a variety of Mia’s musical influences; from beautiful indie-folk, soul-drenched rhythms, to straight up club-ready pop energy. Including the hits, ‘Tell Her’ and ‘What If’, the album explores the chaotic, bewildering and often euphoric narrative of Mia meeting her true self for the first time. The frenetic energy of the album ties beautifully in with Mia’s powerful vocals and hold on emotion as the record takes the listener on each vibrant twist and turn. If the album feels like a moment of a young person’s life being played out in real time, it’s because that essentially is what was happening as Mia put thoughts and feelings to paper.

“It’s all a bit of a blur, the whole realising that I was probably queer. The first thing I had in my notes was that I felt like I was saying hello to myself for the first time in a really long time. “Hi, it’s nice to meet me” just kept coming up in my brain as a theme. I thought it was cool and unique, I hadn’t really seen that around a lot. It felt right. It was a real slap in the face like, “Oh that’s who I am, that makes sense…”

hi, it’s nice to meet me is an uplifting, empowering and wholly relatable listen, delivered with a sense of fun, but a sense of relief as Mia arrives at a place of pure comfort within herself as an artist, and as a human; a true album for the ages.

YORKE ‘Love On The Run’ (Single/Video)

Yorke, the Naarm/Melbourne based alt-pop artist, makes her return with her new single ‘love on the run’. The first new music since the release of her sophomore EP ten feet tall, ‘love on the run’ arrives as Yorke heads out on tour with Kita Alexander.

‘love on the run’ is one hell of a re-entry for Yorke. Co- written with Lucy Healey (FINNEAS, Madison Beer, Lisa, Ryan Tedder), the new single pulses with urgency, action and a hint of darkness, and with Yorke’s fresh take on the “meeting someone when you least expect it” narrative, her lyricism has never been sharper.

Returning with a strong creative and sonic vision, ‘love on the run’ sets the tone for what’s to come. Yorke shares, “sonically, I think of the new world as the redemption of my 20’s. I just really wanted to create music people could exercise, party, drive or get ready to, as I was sick of being sad and wanted to regain control. It’s the first time since starting the Yorke project that I haven’t felt ashamed to say, ‘Hey, I love writing and listening to pop music more than anything.”

And like any pop master, Yorke understands the importance of crafting a rich, complex visual world for her music, too. ‘love on the run’ is accompanied by a world-class video, directed by ARIA Award Winning Kyle Caulfield (Royel Otis, G Flip, Peach PRC).

The video showcases the duality of women, the complicated inner world of an artist in her twenties, represented through two versions of Yorke navigating through the highs and lows.

PARCELS ‘Leaveyourlove’ (Single/Video)

Byron Bay band Parcels have released their new single ‘Leaveyourlove‘, out now via Because Music. Alongside the single, Parcels offer a soulful video version of the track, warmly inviting the audience into the multifaceted intimacy of their rehearsals.

‘Leaveyourlove’ is the first new single of 2024 from Parcels, as the band return to the studio to work on their anticipated third studio album, the follow up to their acclaimed 2021 album Day/Night.

Of the new single and video, the band say: “Leaveyourlove is our first new song in a long time. It was first a short instrumental jam over a drum loop in Berlin, which you hear at the start. Then months later, a whole lot of vocal ideas, tracked by Noah, Pat and Jules at a studio on the coast of Oaxaca in Mexico. They were joyous and carefree sessions on the beach and in the mountains.

We had fun with the idea of trading lines like a boy band and giving each of our singers their own verse. It’s a song that fell into place naturally and inspired a clear direction for our next album. And in a full circle completion for ‘Leaveyourlove’, we filmed the video together back in Berlin almost a year after it was recorded.”

Parcels recently came off an extensive tour which saw them perform to their biggest crowds to date across the world, including a one-off, special live performance at iconic outdoor music venue Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and appearances at the world’s biggest festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Corona Capital.

BUCK JOHNSON ’Tongue and Groove’ (Album)

Buck Johnson, the renowned keyboardist and backing vocalist for Aerosmith, The Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen), The Joe Perry Project, and on tour with Ringo Starr, releases his highly anticipated album Tongue and Groove. The album is a visceral experience that channels the raw power of rock and roll with the soulful depth of a seasoned storyteller. Packed with blistering guitar riffs, haunting melodies, and lyrics that cut to the bone, Tongue and Groove is a fearless tribute to resilience, drawing its strength from the timeless concept of the “tongue and groove” woodworking joint—a symbol of enduring connection and strength against life’s fiercest storms.

STREAM HERE

Tongue and Groove is a collection of songs Buck had co-written with lifelong collaborators such as Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Joe Cocker, Joni Mitchell), and was self-produced by Buck. The album showcases the roots-rock voice of Buck (“tongue”) with his classic rock production (“groove”). Buck enlisted talented musicians and friends on the album, including guitarists Damon Johnson (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Brother Cane), Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), Rob McNelley (Bob Seger, ACM Guitar Player of the Year), drummer Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney), and bassist Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi).

Reflecting on his upbringing in Shady Grove, Alabama, Buck shares, “When I was a kid growing up in Adamsville, Alabama, my family lived in an older craftsman style home, and when there would be tornado warnings, my father would say, ‘No need to worry, son, cause this house is built tongue and groove, and it will withstand any storm.’ After my father passed away in 2021, that saying resonated with me as I wrote the title track “Tongue And Groove” with Charlie Midnight and Peter Stroud, which became the cornerstone of the album.”

‘Tongue and groove this house ain’t gonna move
It’ll be alright, gonna be alright
Every piece has its place
Let nothing go to waste
That’s the way we live our lives
We’re built tongue and groove’

These lyrics from the album’s title track echo the deep, personal connection Buck feels of things falling into place. Buck says, “That song was the benchmark for the album, as I assembled a collection of songs that fit together seamlessly and emotionally. Songs like “Live For The Song” tell the story of being a lifetime singer and musician, and what keeps you going on the road is the music. “Living the Life” is a fun uptempo song about being grateful in life when you have someone you love by your side.”

Drawing inspiration from his own experiences, Buck crafted an album that reflects the themes of perseverance, love, and the pursuit of passion. The tracks were carefully chosen to mirror the emotional highs and lows of life, just like the steady strength of a tongue and groove joint. Each song, with its unique message and sound, builds upon the others to create a cohesive, powerful narrative that resonates with listeners.

Buck adds, “A tongue and groove joint is a type of woodworking joint that simplifies the installation process of wood boards and materials. Its main purpose is to easily fit groove boards and joints together with minimal stress or effort involved. It creates a strong and seamless connection between the two boards.”

Buck previously released “Just Feel Better,” a song that was recorded by Carlos Santana featuring Steven Tyler on vocals in 2005. The song is about a close friend who suffered abuse and would do anything to just feel better. Buck says, “It’s my hope that the song speaks to those who suffer mentally and emotionally and know that it’s okay to reach out for help.”

Tongue and Groove stands as a testament to Buck’s dedication and artistry. With its heartfelt lyrics, masterful musicianship, and rich production, Buck Johnson invites you to experience this sonic journey, where each track builds a bridge between the past and the present, reminding us all of the power of music to heal, inspire, and bring us together.

BLUE VEDDER ‘Farewell. Goodbye’ (EP) ‘Wet Paper’ (Single)

Blue Vedder have consistently moved from strength to strength with each release, and today the Naarm-based alternative outfit are proud to reveal their most magnetic work to date – their sophomore EP, FAREWELL.GOODBYE.

Opening with the pulsing and addictive focus single ‘Wet Paper’, FAREWELL.GOODBYE. meanders through four brilliant shoegaze-drenched tracks, blending dreamy guitar sections with pop sensibilities and soaring choruses. Following ‘Wet Paper’ is the striking five-and-a-half minute ‘Morning Light’, destined for swaying mosh pits. Next, the fan-favourite ‘Freaking Out’ – a standout from the band’s live shows – builds momentum before the record gently closes with the nostalgic warmth of ‘Careless’.

FAREWELL.GOODBYE. sees Blue Vedder at their most experimental, yet most refined, as they draw from a menagerie of genres from 90s breakbeat, Brit-pop, modern shoegaze and alternative rock. An ode to their DIY upbringing, FAREWELL. GOODBYE. was built collectively by the band, co-produced alongside Joe Agius (Hatchie, RINSE, The Creases), and drums engineered alongside Chris Peruch.

As primary songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Seth Hancock’s favourite track from the EP, and one that marks an evolution of sound for the band, it’s only fitting that ‘Wet Paper’ marks the final focus single on FAREWELL.GOODBYE.

“It’s a modern, trip-hop twist on the shoegaze-derived sound we usually go for,” Hancock says. “We went with drum machine, lots of synth, and sounds that we’d rarely use. Joe (Agius) helped transform the song into what it is now with many new and exciting layers. This seems like the direction we’re heading in with our new music.”

Coming off a strong last 18 months, Blue Vedder have played iconic festivals Spilt Milk and Yours & Owls, as well as packed-out headline shows and support slots with artists including RATt!hammock, Flyying Colours, and West Thebarton. Their recent releases have been supported by the likes of triple j, Unearthed, Rolling Stone Australia, Frankie magazine, The AU Review, Happy Mag, Beat, Triple R, PBS, 2SER, 4ZZZ, and more.

TRIM REAPER ‘listen to Trim Reaper’ (EP)

Welcome to the wild world of Trim Reaper – an explosion of mid-00s indie electro punk goodness and the latest project from Australian indie rock icons Matthew Somers (I Heart Hiroshima) and Michael Hardy (Violent Soho, Miiesha, Birds Of Tokyo…). Today, Trim Reaper reveal their debut EP, listen to Trim Reaper, including new single and focus track ‘Super Hans’ ft fellow Brisbane local Yb.

Trim Reaper draw their power from the unfiltered charm of vintage gear and unconventional recording equipment. The duo draw inspiration from bands like Suicide, LCD Soundsystem, IDLES, and Protomartyr, fusing purpose and passion to create their heavy and heartfelt art. Described as dance punk/indie electro, Somers and Hardy carve their groove with live drums, distortion, and tape machines, transforming raw energy into art that is both sincere and unpretentious. Their music tackles themes of housing affordability, wealth division, emotional empathy, and self-worth, giving a voice to the underrepresented and pushing back against the fear, ego, and cataclysm dominating today’s headlines.

listen to Trim Reaper follows on from the release of recent singles ‘Modest Salary’ and ‘Release Love’. Born from a series of 4-track cassette jams recorded in the early months of 2020, these raw sessions were later sampled and layered to become the blueprint of their debut EP. “listen to Trim Reaper is a small collection of songs, intentionally created in the rawest form this project will ever be. We wanted to bring people in with something that shows our truest self, not masking our obscurities and quirks with fancy production and expensive mixes” the duo explain of their debut EP.

“We recorded, produced and mixed everything ourselves in Mikey’s Brisbane studio and a lot of the process of creating these tracks was the journey of learning to trust our ability, and the realisation that we have something special to offer to the world, which is something that can be hard to navigate in a time when the music market is unequivocally over saturated with releases. listen to Trim Reaper is for the luck-trodden, hard working, big hearted humans who walk towards a fair future for all. We’re proud of this project, ecstatic for the future and hungry to prove what we have to offer.  Long live 4 track tape machines. Long live Trim Reaper.”

To celebrate the release of the EP, Trim Reaper have also revealed the official video clip for ‘Super Hans’ ft Yb shot on location at Brisbane’s Powerhouse Museum.

MALAKYE GRIND ‘Every Day Is Perfect’ (Single)

Malakye Grind return with defiant single “Every Day Is Perfect” alongside sophomore album, Dystopian Dream (via Extreme Music).

For fans of Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver,  Guns n Roses, Stone Temple Pilots.

In the years since their formation on the Central Coast of Australia, Malakye Grind has charged into the rock scene with a distinctive blend of hard rock, grunge, and alternative rock. The band garnered international acclaim with their 2021 debut album, Music for Midnight People. The record showcased the band’s musical versatility and universal appeal, with single “Wanna Party” featured on Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. They now power forth in their explosive sophomore record, Dystopian Dream, teaming up once again with Forrester Savell to take the international stage with a blend of raw energy and thoughtful production.

Standout single “Every Day Is Perfect” is the second single to come from Dystopian Dream. The track explores the tension between personal agency and the societal pressures to project perfection. The repetition of “Every day is perfect, ’cause I said it is” in the chorus represents a willful affirmation of agency and inner determination, and as they share further, “it’s about choosing how to frame your experience, even if you’re “sliding down the wall,” metaphorically capturing the feeling of struggling but still declaring control over your outlook.”

On the single, Malakye Grind states, “for us, ‘Every Day is Perfect’ encapsulates this idea of fighting back against the pressures to present an idealized version of life and embracing the imperfections instead. It’s both a sarcastic nod to society’s obsession with perfection and an empowering message about reclaiming personal control—declaring that it’s perfect because we choose to see it that way.”

Dystopian Dream presents a thrilling ride into the unknown, dealing with themes of social commentary and resilience in the face of adversity. On the record, the band shares, “it’s a reflection of our world–a wild, uncharted landscape of hope and decay. We’re staring into the storm, embracing the chaos, and chasing the music through the madness.”

Malakye Grind have garnered acclaim for their distinctive sound and dynamic stage presence. Following the release of their latest single, “Into The Night” and their sophomore record Dystopian Dream, Malakye Grind have seen a surge in popularity, gaining 14k Spotify listeners in month following its release. Their debut album, Music for Midnight People, saw significant airplay on international radio, leading to several film and television placements. Their tracks have also been featured on Rugby Nation Europe and American sports broadcasts, solidifying their place in the international rock scene.

This final single provides an intimate look at her journey through love and vulnerability, perfectly setting the stage for the highly anticipated EP.

“’new to this’ is inspired by my occasional compulsion to fall a bit too easily,” says Ixaras. “I wrote this song at the age of 13, and it’s a confession of inexperience when it comes to love and relationships.” With its fusion of post-punk guitar tones and catchy indie pop rock melodies, the track embodies the candidness that has become synonymous with Ixaras’ music.

As a Brisbane-based artist who embodies the spirit of inclusivity and accessibility, Ixaras not only uses her music as a platform for self-expression but also leads her own DIY label, Anti-Dismal, organising all-ages gigs in unconventional spaces like skateparks, backyards, and community halls.

Renowned Australian producer JACK NIGRO unveils new podcast, MAKE YOUR OWN NOISE

Renowned Australian producer, engineer and studio owner Jack Nigro has just unveiled his latest creative project; a podcast called Make Your Own Noise. The podcast is aimed to empower creatives to find their voice, both within their industry and within themselves.

Like in any space, there are many challenges one faces when working in the creative fields. Knowing where and how to start your career, striving to master your art whilst learning to run a business, work/life balance and navigating the internal challenges of working for yourself; these are but a few of the many concerns commonly encountered by creatives in their day-to-day, and just some of the many topics which Jack will endeavour to cover on this journey.

“This is something very close to me that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have been blessed with so many great discussions with my professional peers over the years about how to work for yourself, creating and perfecting your art and the many challenges and vulnerabilities we all face, mostly working for ourselves in the creative industries.”  JACK NIGRO

Jack, known for his work with names like The Amity Affliction, DMA’s, Skegss, Middle Kids, Pacific Avenue, The Terrys and countless others, will draw upon over a decades experience of building a successful business, managing and owning recording studios and producing/engineering many of Australia’s most renowned artists and bands, to help guide and support the next wave of creative professionals entering their respective industries.

Make Your Own Noise will include both short-form pod episodes, as well as other more extended and in-depth discussions on particular topics, and will at time feature special guest appearances from other creatives at the top of their respective fields. On the genesis of this passion project, Jack expressed:

“I have noticed in recent years that I am fortunate enough to be in a position where junior people have reached out to me asking for advice and the more common this became, the more I saw the same themes and questions arise. So I decided to make this podcast. Self-development is a huge part of my life outside of the studio and I have seen the benefits it has had on my life and professional career too. My intention for this show is to build a supportive and aspiring community to help encourage everyone to work towards their dream career and life. To empower creatives to find their voice”  JACK NIGRO

The first episode of Make Your Own Noise, which features Jack delving into the topic of Imposter Syndrome within the music industry and other creative fields, is out now, and will be followed by new episodes every two weeks.
