SHANE REILLY ‘Under The Sky’ (Album out October 3)

Following three critically acclaimed albums with his band LOST RAGAS Shane Reilly releases new solo album on the 3rd of October, and it’s what you would expect from this pedigree and so much more. Building on his already finely honed song writing and production skills , this collection of 11 meticulously crafted songs pushes into corners of emotion and sonic discovery deeper than he previously explored.

It’s at once intimate and grand in scheme , taking you from the Lennon like honesty of Parallel Lives , to the Elliott Smith intimacy of ‘ Find Your Own Blue ‘ to the epic journey of ‘ Goodbye Is The New Hello ‘ on to the desert highway escape of ‘ No Turning Back Now ‘ and up the mountain to the heavy mantra that is the title track ‘ Under The Sky ‘.  It is indeed a journey. Having played on stage and on records with Beck , Tex Perkins , Paul Kelly , Emma Donovan and many many more , Shane takes  that experience , his signature pedal steel sound , his guitar , piano , mandolin and distinctive vocals with a touch of his informed string arrangements and weaves it all into a record of a life lived ‘ Under The Sky ‘.

Recorded at his own RESAFORNIA RECORDS studio and then on to Union St Studio where the drums , bass and live string quartet were tracked and mixed by Roger Bergodaz ( Tex Perkins , The Cruel Sea ) ‘ Under The Sky ‘ is available on vinyl and streaming on all platforms on October 3rd.

QUINNY ‘Everything You Want’ (Single) ‘Other Monologue’ (Album out Oct 17)

A charming pop turn from Scottish-born, Melbourne-based artist Quinny, the brand new single Everything You Want, out today, expands Quinny’s indie folk sonic universe into buoyant new territory, also armed with an endearing accompanying music video. Following on from his recent singles Settlers and Found & Lost, Everything You Want also unveils yet another sneak peek ahead of Quinny’s debut full-length album, with Outer Monologue officially set for release on Thursday October 17 and available to presave now.

A track that took on many forms during its recording process, Everything You Want saw Quinny team up with Graham McCusker, a composer for BBC’s His Dark Materials and lead artist in Glasgow/Manchester bands KAZE and Marouli, as well as fellow creative Kieran Logan, drummer for Kassidy, to bring the charming new single to life. Mixed and with additional production courtesy of Nathan Cable and mastered by Neil Pickles, Everything You Want ultimately flourishes with balanced modernity and classic craftsmanship, drawing on some dazzling influences and real-life experiences along with performances from Quinny himself on vocals, guitar and bass, Marie Collins (from The Vegan Leather) on backing vocals, Graham McCusker on backing vocals and keys, Dan Drennan on guitar, and some integral drum work courtesy of Kieran Logan. “This song is fairly new, and it got changed a lot in the recording process, so I definitely still feel in our honeymoon phase,” shares Quinny. “Everything You Want is one of my poppier tracks, very upbeat with a good groove – and props for the groove goes out to Kieran Logan who played drums on this one. Once we got right into the weeds of this tune, we were really aiming for a 1975 feel. Bit of Bombay Bicycle Club, Biffy Clyro and Steely Dan in there too. It’s about us not realising how good we have it. I feel like when things are going well, we can create problems to justify ourselves and our struggles.”

Recorded at Tpot Studios by Robin Evans in Quinny’s homeland, Scotland, Everything You Want’s cheerful wiles are perfectly matched by its accompanying music video.

To celebrate the release of Outer Monologue this October, Quinny will host a special album listening party on Saturday October 19, with the free event set to take place at The Gem in Collingwood, before christening the album live in action this December. “I’ll play the album in full for the first time in December, followed by a set of my wonky Christmas tunes,” Quinny shares. “It’ll be high energy, and I’ll try not to derail the sombre mood of the songs by talking too much – though that seems to be half of what people come for now!”

Everything You Want is out today. Quinny’s full-length album Outer Monologue is due out Thursday October 17 and is available to presave now.

QUINNY – UPCOMING SHOWS:
SAT 19 OCT | THE GEM (UPSTAIRS), COLLINGWOOD, VIC | ALL AGES

MARK WILLIAMS announces epic 50th anniversary event

Set to celebrate an impressive five-decade long career that has been marked by numerous achievements and praise, multi-faceted performer Mark Williams has announced ‘Now And Then’; a special 50th anniversary show for fans in Sydney this November.

Taking place just weeks before the iconic performer tours the East Coast, fronting Dragon at this year’s Good Things Festival, Williams’ 50th anniversary show is a moment for fans to revisit one of New Zealand’s biggest success stories. For Williams, it is an opportunity to celebrate 50 years in the industry, and to take the audience on a journey – from then, all the way to now.

Bringing a blend of funk, rhythms, soul and rock to the stage, Williams is excited to be presenting this brand new solo show that aims to give the audience an insight into the sorts of sounds that have defined him as an artist over such an expansive period of time.

“I recently had the honour of supporting Boney M as a solo artist on their hugely successful tour across Australia and New Zealand, with sold out shows every night. It inspired me to create a new performance that re-establishes my presence as a solo artist and celebrates 50 years in this industry – a milestone for any artist.

Many might recognise my face but not know my name. Although nowadays I’m more well-known as the lead singer of Dragon, most people aren’t familiar with the backstory of how I got here, or the journey that made me the artist I am today. Now, I have the chance to showcase my own voice again.”

MARK WILLIAMS
In 2024, Williams has kept busy on the road, not only touring the country and NZ with Boney M, but also performing sets at this year’s Gympie Muster, and on tour with Dragon – who also celebrated 50 years – in April. Previously, he has supported the likes of UB40, Toto, Jefferson Starship, Jimmy Barnes and more across a much-lauded career.

Early career successes in NZ were marked by #1 hits in ‘Yesterday Was Just The Beginning Of My Life’ (1975) and ‘It Doesn’t Matter Anymore’ (1977), which would eventually lead to the release of three studio albums for Williams before he moved to Australia.

Following his relocation to Australia, Williams  clocked an impressive run of collaborations with the likes of Renee Geyer, Tim Finn, Jenny Morris, The Church and more. It was Williams’ landmark song ‘Show No Mercy,’ which reached the Top 10 of the Australian and New Zealand charts and achieved platinum status in 1990, that cemented his legendary status and became an enduring anthem that inspired major sporting events and teams throughout the nineties. As the frontman of Dragon, Williams has remained a constant presence on the Australian music scene; the band having released six studio records and EPs, along with multiple tours since 2006.

Joining Mark for his ‘Here And Now’ performance will be his daughter Taylor B-W. An artist in her own right, Taylor will be opening up the night with her own performance, and will be sharing the stage with Mark during his set.

RUFOUS WHISTLER ‘River Gum Tree’ (Single) and East Coast Tour

This week, Rufous Whistler shares news of a debut East Coast tour and announces the forthcoming release of his very first single, River Gum Trees, releasing independently on September 9th 2024. STREAM  HERE

Rufous Whistler is the moniker of Vinny Russell, a versatile singer-songwriter with deep roots in Northeast Victoria (Wiradjuri Country). Known for his campfire-glow voice and multi-instrumental skill, Russell (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin) steps into the limelight and finds his own contemporary folk sound with Rufous Whistler.

River Gum Tree was the first song written for the Rufous Whistler project and sees Russell using his distinctly soothing vocal tone to ponder the importance of relationships and the passage of time, over a tapestry of melodic string arrangements.

Russell, who spent years lending his instrumental skills to folk and bluegrass acts, The Humbuckin’ Pickups and Knott Family Band, is now accompanied by a cast of talented friends, Steven Hornby (double bass), Lucy McKenzie-McHarg (fiddle, mandolin), and Dylan Knur (mandolin, fiddle, banjo) who help bring River Gum Trees to life with 4 part harmonies and soul-stirring melodies that defy the boundaries of contemporary folk.

Heading out on an East Coast tour for the very first time this September, Rufous Whistler will capture audiences in new and intimate settings with earnest storytelling atop soothing melodies that seamlessly blend folk tradition with innovation.

River Gum Trees releases independently on September 9th with the East Coast tour beginning in the Blue Mountains on September 19th.

LINN HOLMES ‘Cruisin’ With You’ (Single)

Linn Holmes aka Linn Holmstedt is a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter. Known for her work as a session singer, performing and recording background vocals for a vast variety of bands and artists, Linn has become a growing name in the Los Angeles rock scene. Mixing the influences of her mother’s time singing gospel and her fathers love for rock n roll – acts such as the Allman Brothers Band, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt and Fleetwood Mac came to shape her sound. She is now embarking on her solo journey, with her first EP titled “Introducing Linn Holmes” released earlier this year and with her follow up single “Cruisin’ With You” premiering September 6th.

“Cruisin’ With You”  is a continuation of Linn’s portrait of love in a picture perfect vintage daydream, that kind of uncomplicated and dream-like romance you only see in movies. Produced by Tom Chandler, the song is written by Linn herself alongside Tom as well as collaborator Marcus Lundqvist, featuring the talents of Daniel Jakubovic and Nikhil Koparkar.

CHIMERS ‘Glossary’ (Single/Video)

Following the recent announcement of Chimers’ new album Through Today – which will be out November 8th via Poison City Records and Gerard Cosloy’s 12XU (North America) – and the release of first single and video ‘3AM’, the Wollongong duo today releases the new single and video “Glossary”.
Watch the video clip below & preorder the album via Poison City E-Store / Bandcamp or 12XU Records in North America.

Through Today is Chimers’ second long player, ten tracks of raw honest aggression capturing the band at their zeitgeist: right here and right now, as melody and power merge seamlessly into one. Recorded and mixed by Jonathan Boulet (Party Dozen, Body Type, Loose Fit) Through Today is a significant leap forward from Chimers’ self-released and self-titled 2021 debut. An album that started as a whisper and turned into a roar, regularly re-pressed as the band played shows across the country as the support act of choice to such luminaries as Mudhoney, Built To Spill, R.V.G, The Mark Of Cain, Scientists, Body Type, Victims, Screamfeeder, Civic and Cable Ties.

For their follow-up, Chimers moved out of the garage and into Wollongong’s Stranded Studios. The band made use of Boulet’s lightning-fast approach, recording 13 songs in just three days with executive rule ultimately trimming the fat to 10 for the album. Traces of late-eighties post-hardcore and alterna-sounds (Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü) seep in and out of the album, but with Chimers’ direct and no-unnecessary-fills approach, the sound is always uniquely theirs. Padraic’s passionate, heart-on-sleeve vocal approach and singular, spidery guitar lines are intensified by the pummelling rhythms of drummer Binx. Jono’s minimalist approach and the collective mindset have resulted in a timeless album that sounds personal and quite unlike anything else to come soaring out of the Australian underground.

Continuing their reputation as a hardworking, constantly touring entity, Chimers have a whole swag of live dates on the calendar – including an epic run of shows supporting The Saints ‘73-’78. Don’t miss em’!

BEN WALKER ‘Head In The Clouds’ (Single)

Ben Walker is not your typical songwriter. This British-born artist, now calling Sydney’s Northern Beaches home, blends soulful melodies with poignant storytelling that will make you laugh, cry, and reflect deeply. Ben’s journey into songwriting is nothing short of inspirational. Raised in the UK, his love for music was sparked at an early age, but it wasn’t until he moved to Australia that he truly found his voice. After years spent working in the corporate world (a time he hilariously describes as “music-less”), Ben took the plunge- breaking free to pursue his passion.

With only weeks to go until the release of his debut album “A Place I like to Go To, Sydney based singer songwriter Ben Walker provides us with the first track, the thoughtful and wonderfully crafted “Head In The Clouds”. STREAM HERE

Written at the DAG Sheep Station in Nundle with Luke O’Shea and Brendan Smoother, talking about the song, Ben Says: “I had this phrase in my head “There’s a place I like to go to” and I knew I wanted to talk about how music for me is that one thing that transforms you into the perfect version of yourself, the best place you can go where nothing but good can touch you, but I couldn’t get beyond the first line!

I was sat outside at the DAG and Luke and Brendan came to join me, I explained the idea, Luke Borrowed my guitar and added the riff you hear through the song and the 3 of us threw out lines. Once we started the song took 20 minutes!”

Vocals: Ben Walker; Backing Vocals: Thomas Keating; Drums: Dan Berry; Bass Guitar: Callum Edwards; Guitar: Thomas Keating; Other Instrumentation: Callum Edwards & Thomas Keating

Produced, Mixed and Mastered – Thomas Keating, Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne

Mark Isaacs is an incredibly talented musician and composer who involves himself in an enormous and unprecedented diversity of creative projects. As well as being an award-winning classical composer Mark has been acclaimed internationally as a jazz pianist, classical pianist & film composer. He has been a recording artist for ABC and Naxos amongst other labels.

That multiplicity of creative endeavours includes being in Prague in April 2024 conducting the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in the first recording of his Symphony No. 2, circumstances which enabled the completion of this exciting project which Mark has been nurturing for many years.

So now we have another facet of Mark’s musical world, a turnaround to his major debut as a songwriter/producer, writing all the lyrics as well as composing and arranging the music, which includes the strings of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark.

Add in beautifully expressive, nuanced and textured vocals from Deborah Dicembre, and a team of brilliant, expansive and innovative session musicians led by Mark at the piano/keyboards and special guest Adrian Fabila Tjupurrula on the title track playing didgeribone (hybrid of didgeridoo & trombone).

The tracks were recorded at Studios 301 with the involvement of a notable production team including consulting mix producer Richard Lush who worked as recording engineer with The Beatles on their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, mixdown engineer Lachlan Mitchell who worked with George Martin at the latter’s AIR Studios in London, and associate producer Ollie McGill (Cat Empire).

OPETH  ‘§3’ (Single) ‘The Last will & Testament’ (Album out October 11)

Swedish prog titans OPETH will be releasing their 14th studio album, THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT on October 11, 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music / Moderbolaget! Following the critical acclaim of their first single, the band is now revealing the second offering from the record, ‘§3,’ which can be heard at here – https://opeth.rpm.link/paragraph3

900k Spotify listeners, 500M cross-platform streams, 1M+ albums sold, multiple #1 albums, Swedish Grammy wins and numerous multiple world tours – OPETH are one of the most important bands in metal music. Their unique sound and compelling storytelling made them a genre leader and highly respected artists among musicians and audiences alike.

OPETH’s frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt comments, “So put yourself in my position for a minute: Your band has this new album. You like it. In fact, you love it! It’s got this elaborate concept running through all 8 songs on there. You’ve written it over the timespan of say 6 months, effective time. You’ve invested a lot of passion into putting it together. You’ve recorded it together with your friends/colleagues. You’ve had a good time in the process. Now, said album is on the verge of being released and you’re expected to talk about it. Prepare your audience for its coming. Talk it up! You do want people to hear it, right? You love the album so it should be easy, right? At this point, all you have to do is put together a few words for the new ‘single’. But you’re confused with the use of the term “single”, as you connect it to the olden days where ‘singles’ often had the word ‘hit’ next to it. And you know that won’t happen! Still you want people to hear it. Your loving ‘fans’ might think it’s awesome. But you don’t want to come across as a salesman. On top of that you’re not a complete self-absorbed asshole who thinks you’ve got the Midas touch (well….). Also you have a bad case of that inborn Swedish modesty, sprinkled with some impostor syndrome. What do you say?
‘§3 is out now!’”

Pre-Order THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT here – https://opeth.rpm.link/lastwillPR

OPETH’s fourteenth album was written by Åkerfeldt, with lyrics conferred with Klara Rönnqvist Fors (The Heard, ex-Crucified Barbara). THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT was co-produced by Åkerfeldt and Stefan Boman (Ghost, The Hellacopters), engineered by Boman, Joe Jones (Killing Joke, Robert Plant), and OPETH, with Boman, Åkerfeldt, and the rest of the band mixing at Atlantis and Hammerthorpe Studios in Stockholm. The strings on THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT were arranged by Åkerfeldt and Dave Stewart (Egg, Khan) and conducted by Stewart at Angel Studios in London. Not one to miss a beat, visual artist Travis Smith returns to the fold, crafting his 11th cover, a haunting “photograph” reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s infamous “Overlook Hotel” photograph. Miles Showell (ABBA, Queen) also revisits mastering and vinyl lacquer cutting at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Åkerfeldt rolls out the red carpet for storied flutist and Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson. Not only do Anderson’s signature notes fly on ‘§4’ and ‘§7’, he narrates on ‘§1,’ ‘§2,’ ‘§4,’ and ‘§7’. Joining Anderson, Europe’s Joey Tempest lends a backing vocal hand on ‘§2,’ while Åkerfeldt’s youngest daughter, Mirjam Åkerfeldt, is the disembodied voice in ‘§1’.

THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT is gripping from start to finish, jaw-dropping inside and out, representing some of OPETH’s finest material to date. Just as OPETH welcomed many into its distressed arms over the years, the Swedes again deliver on the promise that great music always tells a compelling story – this time with growls we had not heard since the 2008 “Watershed”.

ED REED ‘It’s Time’ (Single)

Ed Reed is a musician and songwriter based in Melbourne.  Having played in various outfits over his time, Ed decided to take the solo route in 2012, recording a debut album titled “One Good Roll”. Between then and now there has also been an EP titled “These Aren’t the Joy’s You’re Looking For” as well as other single releases. STREAM  HERE

In early 2025 Ed is set to release his sophomore album titled “Enjoy The Madness”.  Song writing for the album began through the somber times of the world pandemic and finished a few years later.

At times, the album carries a certain angst and frustration around the experiences of this global event as well as other personal challenges around that time.  With his heart firmly on this sleeve, you can sense there is anger and worry, but there is also a sense of hope, that everything is going to be ok.

The first single from the album is titled “It’s Time”.  The album opener is a stab at politics and our world decision makers, the greed of big business over the greater good of the world and mother nature.

WILLIAM ALEXANDER ‘All You Need To Do’ (Single)

“Following the very well received new album from William Alexander, ‘The Singing Stockman’, we are pleased to send out another fantastic example of the young singers abilities. Both as a singer and a songwriter.

The opening track to the record, and one of the more personal songs on the list, is ‘All You Need To Do’. Featuring William’s incredible lonesome yodel as he sings life lessons to his young child.

Heartfelt and with a message of kindness, the song can apply to anyone. Featuring Tommy Brooks’ moaning steel guitar and Patrick Wilsons bass guitar playing, this is a stand out song on a record we are all very proud of.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks for having a listen!” – William Alexander Management.

HANNAH STOW ‘Sidelined’ (EP)

Showcasing 6 tracks of emotion, longing, and melancholy, Hannah Stow is finally sharing her long-awaited debut EP ‘Sidelined’, a hazy, dazy, indie-pop experience that is out today. Stream ‘Sidelined’ EP

After the incredible reception of her previous single releases ‘Dawson Road’, ‘But I Lie,’ and ‘In The Dark’ from places like Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Music Feeds, Triple J, Apple Music and more, Hannah Stow is finally sharing her yearning and moody EP ‘Sidelined’, which showcases her gentle voice, proud Australian accent, and meditative electronic mixing for the world to see.

‘Sidelined’ is a collection of singles that a label once told Hannah to give up on, as she continues:

”- yet every time I would post snippets of these songs on my Instagram or TikTok people would go wild for them… Just because someone gives their “opinion” on something doesn’t make it factual. If you do everything with love, express authentically, stay in your lane and believe in yourself – the universe will support you and push you towards where you need to be.”

And it’s clear Hannah has poured all of her love into this EP. With beats that flow together and Hannah’s alluring husky and melodic voice providing a through-line, this album is undeniably all hers.

The album starts with a song tied to the difficult decisions Hannah has had to make to pursue music. ‘Leave Perth’ is a ballad to feeling trapped in a hometown, with soft, meditative electronic synth to capture the melancholy atmosphere. Written because she felt like she had to leave to chase her dream of being a musician, Hannah dwells on how much she wants to leave but how she doesn’t want to leave her loved ones behind.

Then, ‘In The Dark’ is a slow, magical song with gentle guitar and a raw and honest atmosphere. Though it was written when Hannah was in a dark place with little faith in the song, it quickly became a favourite of her fans whenever she performed it at live shows. It flows into the next song, keeping the soft, soothing atmosphere.

‘But I Lie’ dwells on the trials and tribulations that come with a sapphic relationship, exploring how it feels to hide a relationship and how rocky things can get through the sound of pulsing synth and sweet layered vocals.

‘Dawson Road’ lifts up the mood with a guitar riff guiding the song to something a little more poppy: it’s a wistful reflection of the ties two people have even once a relationship has ended.

‘Hard Facts’ has electric drum and bass and a slow, groovy pace with a touch of rap that dwells on how experiences shape a life, but how at the end of the day the person you are is the one you choose to be.

Finally, ‘Shade On Your Name’ features an industrial electronic sound palette and a bass drop with a woman’s voicemail, adding a twist to the song that tells a story of the post-betrayal malaise and the internal conflict that comes with it.

PAT TIERNEY   ‘One Day Soon’ (Single)

Queensland artist Pat Tierney today releases his new single, a soothing and heartfelt folk track titled ‘One Day Soon’. The song arrives alongside the announcement of his brand new album Lost In The Haze, which is set for release on Friday October 11th. Taking influence from artists like Bob Dylan, Ben Harper and JJ Cale, Pat’s music dances between a range of genres, namely folk, blues, roots, and soul. The new release, ‘One Day Soon’, is a gentle acoustic guitar track layered with warm and inviting vocals from Tierney. On the process of creating the new single, he has said:

“This was recorded in a day. We knew we needed a song that breathed and broke up the album a little. It’s easy to get into the studio these days and add layer upon layer. We made sure this one was no more than a couple of guitars, vocals and some backing vocals. I had originally written the song over 10 years ago and always knew it would find its way onto an album one day.”  PAT TIERNEY

A bittersweet lament in which the narrator yearns to reunite with their loved one, ‘One Day Soon’ reads as something of a musical love letter, offering comfort and hope to the aforementioned loved one with the message that, despite this “lonely… empty road,”  they’ll be together again before too long: “I’ll be with you darling / One day soon.”  On the track’s thematic and lyrical content, Pat expressed:

“‘One day Soon’ is really just a letter to a loved one. Longing and hoping the day will come when you meet again. I wanted to have a song on the album that was super minimal and stripped back. Much like the folk music I had grown up listening to on records and CD, and tape cassettes.”   PAT TIERNEY

Since releasing his debut album back in 2015, Pat Tierney has toured consistently over the years, performing to audiences both local and abroad. He has performed at renowned festivals such as Queenscliff Music Festival (VIC), Caloundra Music Festival (QLD), Blues on Broadbeach (QLD) & The West Australian Guitar Festival (WA). Pat has also landed spots supporting the likes of The Beautiful Girls, Ash Grunwald, Bobby Alu, and Harry Manx. To celebrate the release of his upcoming album Lost In the Haze, Pat Tierney will be continuing his adventures in bringing his gorgeous tunes to live crowds across the country, with an album launch tour set to hit stages in Queensland and Western Australia over the coming months!
