ANTONIO SÁNCHEZ: BIRDMAN LIVE
Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of tour-de-force film Birdman’s Best Picture Oscar win, drummer and composer Antonio Sánchez performs his game-changing, improvised soundtrack live at MIJF. This immersive experience is a rare opportunity to see four-time GRAMMY winner Sánchez’s jaw-dropping craft at work, as he scores the film right before your eyes.

One of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene, Sánchez is known as a revered collaborator of legendary guitarist Pat Metheny, and other jazz greats such as Chick Corea, Gary Burton and Michael Brecker.

Sánchez’s propulsive and fervent drumming explodes off the screen in Birdman, and the star-studded film’s 2014 release was met with four Oscars and resounding critical acclaim. Ten years on, we invite you to revisit the film in a completely new light. GET TICKETS

RHAPSODY IN BLUE AT 100: A CELEBRATION OF ORCHESTRAL JAZZ

Orchestra Victoria takes on three masters of orchestral jazz—Gershwin, Jobim, and Chick Corea—with GRAMMY-nominated Japanese pianist Makoto Ozone and Melbourne’s Panorama Brasil.

This special Melbourne International Jazz Festival event celebrates 100 years of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a pioneering concerto that transformed orchestral music. Ozone also leads the orchestra through Chick Corea’s beloved composition Spain, while Panorama Brasil and Orchestra Victoria pay tribute to Antônio Carlos Jobim, the “Godfather of Bossa Nova”.

“Mr. Ozone gave a thrilling, virtuosic and unabashedly personal rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue” that was the highlight of a Gershwin program.” – The New York Times GET TICKETS

NUBYA GARCIA
Constantly pushing the boundaries of jazz, there’s a reason Nubya Garcia is hailed as one of the brightest stars on the global scene.

The multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist has blazed a distinctive trail in the recent UK jazz explosion. Championed by legendary BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and recognised as UK Jazz Act of the Year at the 2019 Jazz FM Awards, Garcia has since received a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize (2021) and regularly performs to capacity crowds at festivals such as Glastonbury, Love Supreme, Montreux and Newport Jazz Festival.

Garcia returns to MIJF following sold-out performances in 2018 to give Melbourne audiences a taste of her upcoming album Odyssey—a majestic release on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub, resulting in a grand, nuanced sound that feels celestial without ever sacrificing the groove.
