Believe it or not, Japan’s #1 modern day beat combo the Bawdies – who play arenas like the Budokan at home – are set to play small club shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Bell’s Beach in early December.
The Bawdies, originating from Tokyo in 2004, have revitalized classic 1950s-1960s beat music and rhythm & blues with their distinctively Japanese twist. The band consists of Roy (lead vocals, bass guitar), Taxman (guitar, backing vocals), Jim (guitar, backing vocals), and Marcy (drums)—four childhood friends united by their passion for the golden era of rock and soul.
Their journey in the music industry began with their signing to Tokyo-based Seez Records. Their debut album “Yesterday and Today” came out in 2006 and featured a range of classic covers such as “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “Tutti Frutti.” This was followed by “Awaking of Rhythm and Blues” in 2008, where they began to shift towards original compositions while maintaining the nostalgic feel of early rock and soul. This evolution continued with subsequent albums, which helped cement their place in the music scene.

The Bawdies’ commitment to their roots was highlighted by their performance alongside the legendary 60s garage rock band The Sonics, an experience the band described as a dream come true. This collaboration not only honored their musical influences but also bridged the gap between eras of rock music.
Over the years, The Bawdies have not only seen significant chart success—such as with their singles “Just Be Cool” and “Hot Dog” climbing high on the Oricon and Japan Hot 100 charts—but they have also made notable appearances at prestigious venues and festivals including Budokan, Fuji Rock, and Rock in Japan. Their accolades include being named the favorite Japanese act at the CD Shop Awards in 2010.
Their discography reflects a journey of growth and musical exploration, combining the essence of rock and soul with innovative compositions. Albums like “This Is My Story” and “There’s No Turning Back” showcase their development and artistic depth. Vinyl releases and video albums, such as “Live at Budokan 20111127,” allow fans to experience the vibrant energy of their live performances.
As The Bawdies continue to tour and release new music, they reaffirm the timeless appeal of rock and soul music, reinterpreted through their creative vision. Their ability to resonate with international audiences underscores their unique position in the global music scene, making them a standout act committed to both their craft and their musical heritage.
