MELANIE DYER: ‘DAISIES FROM DIRT’ ALBUM INTERVIEW

After a year spent chasing her country music dream in Nashville, Australian singer-songwriter Melanie Dyer is back on home soil with her most personal album to date, Daisies From Dirt. In a chat with Australian Musician Magazine editor Greg Phillips, Melanie opens up about the life changes, musical influences and personal stories that shaped her third studio album, and why this collection of songs represents the most authentic version of herself yet.

MORE ABOUT THE INTERVIEW
Out October 23 via ABC Music, Daisies From Dirt was born during a period of significant change for the three-time Golden Guitar nominee. While Melanie was making the move to Nashville to pursue her songwriting ambitions, her family back home was preparing to sell the farm she had always imagined returning to. The result is a ten-track collection that explores the bittersweet territory between leaving and belonging, chasing dreams and honouring the people and places that made you who you are.
“I think this is the most authentically me I’ve been in my music,” Melanie tells Australian Musician.

Nashville has proved a rich creative environment for Dyer, surrounding her with songwriters and musicians who have challenged her to dig deeper and continue developing her craft. Recorded at Saxman Studios with producer Grady Saxman, the album embraces a storytelling-first approach, blending the country sounds Melanie grew up with alongside her contemporary pop-country sensibilities. Drawing on the influence of artists such as The Chicks, Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood, the record moves between intimate acoustic moments, driving guitars and full-bodied country-pop hooks.

The title track, co-written with Amy and George Shepherd, provides the emotional thread running through the album, while opener ‘Country Enough’ makes a spirited statement about identity and belonging. Inspired by her upbringing on a regional NSW farm, the track challenges the idea that country music-or country life-can be defined by a particular look, wardrobe or postcode. For Melanie, it’s about where you come from and the experiences that stay with you.

Elsewhere, ‘Whiplash’ adds a playful dose of relationship frustration, while the album’s broader narrative explores family, homesickness, independence and the emotional realities of building a life on the other side of the world. Melanie also reflects on the Nashville musicians who brought the songs to life, revealing that much of the album’s instrumental tracking was completed in a single day.

The conversation also takes a detour into some treasured six-string history. Melanie recalls saving up for a custom Australian-made Gerard Gilet guitar, which was unfortunately smashed during air travel before being rebuilt by its maker. These days, a Gibson picked up in Port Macquarie has become her main songwriting companion, with every song on Daisies From Dirt written on the instrument.

Having recently performed at CMA Fest, SXSW and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., where she sang the Australian national anthem, Melanie is embracing the next chapter of her career on both sides of the Pacific. Her return to Australia brings an intimate run of shows, including a hometown appearance at Inverell’s Sapphire City Festival, where she’ll share the new songs and the stories behind them. The tour will also feature her first-ever vinyl release.

With Daisies From Dirt, Melanie Dyer has created more than a record about leaving home. It’s an album about carrying home with you, staying connected to your roots and having the courage to pursue the dream, even when the road takes you a long way from where you started.

As Melanie puts it, if someone wanted to know who she is and what her music is all about, this is the album she’d hand them.
