Australian-born, Chicago-based blues guitarist Michael Charles is set to return home this November for a run of Australian shows, bringing his seasoned band, signature blues-rock sound and more than six decades of musical experience back to local audiences. Speaking with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, Charles reflected on the personal significance of touring Australia, revealed details of two upcoming album releases and discussed his enduring passion for performing. The tour begins on November 7 in Bruthen and concludes on November 28 at Bird’s Basement, marking another opportunity for Australian fans to reconnect with the internationally touring musician.
MORE ABOUT THE MICHAEL CHARLES TOUR AND INTERVIEW
For Charles, returning to Australia is about much more than playing gigs. Having built his career in the United States after leaving Australia, he describes each visit as an emotional homecoming, offering the chance to catch up with family and friends, revisit familiar places and meet fans who have followed his music over the years.
Charles will be bringing his own long-standing band rather than relying on local musicians, promising the familiar musical chemistry that has accompanied him throughout his career. He also plans to bring two Stratocaster guitars, including his much-loved 1986 custom-built instrument fitted with new Vandal Pickups, a company he recently began representing.
The tour coincides with an exciting period of new releases. Charles’s 44th and 45th albums are both scheduled for November. The first is a live album, recorded during performances over a 12-month period. After reviewing the recordings, he was so impressed by a complete show captured at Byron’s in Iowa that he decided to release the performance in its entirety. The album will be officially launched at the venue on the eve of his departure for Australia.
The second release, through Australian label Newmarket Music, is a compilation of previously unreleased material. Charles had hoped to complete a third, new studio album as well, but has pushed that project into the new year.
With a career spanning five decades and an almost constant commitment to playing, recording and touring, Charles remains as passionate about his craft as ever. His live performances are guided by instinct, often with set lists abandoned in favour of reading the audience and responding to the mood of the room. Long-time favourites such as Long Way to Go and Gave You My Heart remain staples of his shows.
Charles says his ultimate goal is simple: to give audiences a performance that leaves them eager to see him again. That philosophy, combined with his extensive touring experience and enduring connection to Australian audiences, sets the scene for a welcome November return.
