Born from a dreary day like a cloud’s silver lining is ‘Selling Out’, Boorloo/Perth-based indie artist Lucinda Poy’s breathtaking second-ever single release, is out now.
At just 19, she made her debut in February of 2024 with her spirited single ‘Just Fine’ which has garnered over 15k streams on Spotify alone and captured the hearts and ears of many with her powerhouse vocals and introspective lyrics.
Her accomplishments don’t end there – She’s won Best Original Song at the Wynnum Fringe Festival in 2022, performed pre-game entertainment at Brisbane stadium The Gabba, toured QLD and New Zealand to promote music opportunities to students and even appeared on Channel 7th’s telethon, making her well-established in the scene.
Now, building upon her debut release, she is releasing ‘Selling Out’, a track delicately produced by WA’s Dylan Ollivierre (The Money War, EDIE, Joan & The Giants). This gorgeous single is made up of tender guitar, layered vocals, and gentle drums that let the heartbroken softness of the song shine through. With her powerful and emotive vocals, Lucinda Poy excels at building a gorgeous soundscape, weaving an immersive experience through her voice.
Written after a very stressful day working in hospitality, this song shines a spotlight on the internal conflict Lucinda feels as she laments on leaving her dreams behind and wonders how her life would look if she continued on in hospitality instead of pursuing her dream of music. She recalls the moment that inspired her to write it,
“I remember the feeling of walking out onto the main street after a late night shift. It’s empty, strewn with rubbish, and you would be the only person there. Feeling like you’re stuck in the same job, in the same place, while everyone moves on with their lives. I felt that I was selling myself short with the decisions I made. ”
To celebrate the release of her new single ‘Selling Out’, we sent Lucinda Poy a dozen question to ponder and here are her responses …
1 What was the spark that lit your flame for music initially?
I’ve loved music all my life, but I remember when I was about 3, my grandparents bought me a pink toy electric guitar that came with a pair of pink sunglasses and a headset, and that definitely pushed me in the direction of mainstream music.
2 An album or song that had a huge impact on you growing up?
Taylor Swift’s Red Album.
3 First concert you ever attended?
Like most Aussie kids, the Wiggles. I was obsessed with the Yellow Wiggle and lost my mind when he came up to our aisle.
4 Which other person has had the biggest influence on your music career?
My mum. She encouraged me from a young age to pick up the violin, and signed me up for piano and singing lessons. If it wasn’t for her support, and encouraging us to be involved, I wouldn’t be the musician I am today.
5 What was the main inspiration for your song ‘Selling Out’?
I was working late-night hospitality last year, and I felt like I was falling behind. I was terrified that everyone else was moving ahead with their lives, and I was selling out on my dreams.
6 In general what’s the starting point for a Lucinda Poy song?
I find my best songs come to me after a change, or an emotional event. Normally a strong melodic idea comes to me after playing the piano, or if I’m in some quiet time, and I’ll build the lyrics and the song from that.
7 What would be your dream collaboration?
A collab with Maggie Rogers would 1000% be the dream! Maggie has been my biggest inspiration for the last six years or so.
8 What would you like your music career to look like in 5 years time?
Ideally touring, releasing music and travelling the world. I’d hope to start opening for some well-known artists, releasing albums and living life to the fullest.
9 What would you consider to be the favourite gig you have played so far?
I most recently played solo at the Heath Ledger Theatre, in the WA State Theatre centre for WAAPA’s VERGE shows. I wrote an original song for the show, and the wonderful Natalie Allen in collaboration with the WAAPA Contemporary dancers constructed a work from my song! It’s a dream to see someone create something with your song, and to move on stage with a cohort of professional dancers.
10 If money was no issue, what would a Lucinda Poy concert look like?
I think if I had an unlimited budget, I’d like to invest in any way to enhance the storytelling of my music. The dream is to play to big crowds, and I’d love to have my dance friends involved. I love what Raye has done, with a full symphony behind her, and we need to bring more opportunities for musicians! Would love to have a good outfit for the show, be able to jump around on the different instruments I can play, and bring in some of my favourite artists to play on-stage with.
11 An important life lesson someone gave/told you?
Be a yes person. You never know where an opportunity could take you.
12 What’s next for Lucinda Poy?
I’m about to fly home to Brisbane for 2 months, and hope to do some performances while I’m home. Preparing for some exciting upcoming projects early next year!
