For the last 8 years Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist Hannah Crofts has performed as one quarter of Australian folk act All Our Exes Live In Texas. With the pandemic forcing the band off the road, all four members set about exploring their own individual musical projects. For Hannah, that became her alter ego Baby Velvet and the recording of a debut solo album Please Don’t Be In Love With Someone Else, out now via ABC Music.
Australian Musician editor caught up with Baby Velvet via zoom to discuss the making of Please Don’t Be In Love With Someone Else and much more.
Produced by LA legend Kevin Ratterman (My Morning Jacket, Ray LaMontagne) and Melbourne royalty James Gilligan, Please Don’t Be In Love With Someone Else delves in to the complexities of love, life, and adulthood across its 10 tracks. Drawn mainly from the memories and emotions triggered from old diary entries, Baby Velvet looks inward as she reflects on heartbreak and making the same mistakes, self-doubt, and the darker realities of being a touring musician. Much like his own vast My Morning Jacket sound, producer Kevin Ratterman has added an atmospheric aura to these tracks, giving them an enticing, dream-like sensibility. It’s one of those albums that reveals subtle hidden treasures with each repeat play.
