Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips caught up with Sydney-based Guitarist, Producer & Musical Director, Dan Maher during a day off from the recording of his current gig, the latest series of Australian Idol, to chat about his career and gear.

Sydney-based Guitarist & Musical Director, Dan Maher, is an in-demand freelance musician who has gained a solid reputation in the industry due to his slick licks, professional attitude and strong work ethic. At 31 years of age, he has built a diverse and rewarding career ranging from television to touring & live artist performance, to musical theatre and studio sessions. At the moment Dan is working on the current series of Australian Idol, but has also worked with a long list of International & Australian artists including: Rita Ora, Little Mix, Adam Lambert, Joe Jonas, Kelly Rowland, Ronan Keating, Boy George, Sutton Foster, Cody Simpson, Take That, Tina Arena, Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem, Jennifer Holliday, Dami Im, Ricki-Lee, Samantha Jade, Rick Price, Bonnie Anderson and many more. His work alongside top artists has seen him play in a wide variety of venues, from small bars, radio stations and tv studios, to arenas and stadiums, including Fire Fight to 85,000 people with both Tina Arena & Ronan Keating.
Television credits include houseband guitarist for hit global TV shows The Voice & Dancing With The Stars, as well all guitar production/sound design for Seasons 1 & 2 of The Masked Singer (Au) & Season 7 of Australia’s Got Talent. Dan is also the houseband guitarist for hit American music game show Name That Tune which is currently airing on the FOX network in the United States, hosted by Randy Jackson & Jane Krakowski. Other TV credits include countless guest performances on shows such as The 2018 ARIA Music Awards, X-Factor, Australia’s Got Talent, MTV, & Nickelodeon SlimeFest to name a handful. Also no stranger to musical theatre, Dan has played for over 60 theatrical productions across Australia including the touring productions of The Bodyguard, Jersey Boys, Cats, Dreamlover, Ladies in Black & the Defying Gravity concert series alongside prolific film/theatre composer Stephen Schwartz.
