GABRIEL VARGAS – GUITAR

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Gabriel Vargas has just released a new single, Like Wolves – a song that traverses the tenacity of old wounds and turning victimhood into empowerment. He has also released an accompanying video that captures the true, undeniable beauty in the way that humans are able to grow and move past traumatic events. Gabriel Vargas will be launching his stunning new offering at Melbourne’s Croxton Front Bar on March 17.
Due to the familial and personal connection to the subject matter of this release, he has decided to donate all profits from the online sales of Like Wolves to the The White Ribbon Foundation. Ahead of the launch Gabriel answered a few quick questions for us

What was your first guitar?
A Yamaha nylon/classical guitar….it was full of odd stickers and got beaten around a bit!

What’s your main guitar now?
My trusty Cole Clark Fat Lady…it has served me well for 13 years!

Through what amp and why?
Amp? I just stick to DI’s!

Which pedals are your standards?
Boss RC-1 has been revolutionary for creating new textures and layers

What’s your latest recording and when will you be back in the studio?
My latest recording is my debut single “Like Wolves.” I have another couple of singles lined up for release but will be back in the studio soon to work with Jeff Martin (The Tea Party) as well as record a full album for another project with my song-writing partner, Jake Lowe.

What gigs have you been playing lately?
Mainly intimate acoustic shows

Most memorable gig?
Supporting INXS in Broome 2010 in front of 5,000 people.

Worst stage nightmare?
Opening my mouth and nothing comes out…..thankfully it hasn’t happened!

Album that changed your life?
Graceland – Paul Simon. The fusion of traditional South African music with western music was brilliant and still resonates with me to this day.

What gigs are coming up in the next few months?
I have few Perth shows (my home town), followed by my single launch at the Croxton in Thornbury on March 17, at which point I will have a little break and focus on some recording…

A guitar tip for the kids?
The sooner you start the better!
