AUDREY POWNE INTERVIEW

Sometimes you just know that an emerging artist is going to make a much bigger impact in the music world at some point in the near future. For Melbourne based trumpet playing jazz vocalist, Audrey Powne, all the signs are there. Last weekend Audrey played to 100,000 people at the MCG as part of Robbie Williams band, along with Delta Goodrem. From there she headed to Brunswick’s JazzLab to perform with her own band for a global livestream, recorded by the ohjazz.tv network and available now to view.

In the last couple of years, despite pandemic hurdles, she has managed to tour America playing with The Teskey Brothers, performed on Jimmy Barnes’ Soul Deep 30th anniversary tour and backed the mighty Midnight Oil on trumpet. Then there’s her recordings. Check out Audrey’s 2020 debut EP Bed I Made for a prime example of the fabulous music coming out of Melbourne’s fantastic neo jazz soul scene. She’s recorded and performed in New York and is in the process of finishing off her debut album, for release either late 2022 or early 2023.

Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips caught up with Audrey Powne via zoom to talk about her career and the ohjazz.tv network, which is bringing Australian jazz to the world and vice versa.
