Tom Morello is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and political activist best known as a founding member of the groundbreaking rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Renowned for his innovative guitar playing, Morello developed a unique style that blends rock, metal, and funk, incorporating unconventional techniques like finger-tapping, looping, and scratch-like effects. His powerful riffs and politically charged lyrics have made him one of the most influential guitarists of his generation, with Rage Against the Machine’s albums, such as Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999), becoming iconic in the rock and activist music scenes.
Outside of his work with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, Morello has enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing music under his own name and as the Nightwatchman. He’s also collaborated with a wide array of artists, from Bruce Springsteen to Prophets of Rage, further solidifying his influence across genres. Known for his activism, Morello uses his music to address political and social issues, becoming an outspoken advocate for change. With his genre-defying guitar skills and commitment to social justice, Tom Morello continues to inspire musicians and fans alike, maintaining a lasting impact on both music and activism.
Tom Morello’s and band will be here in April for an Australian tour, including Bluesfest Byron Bay, in will he will showcase his iconic career-defining hits as well as new songs from his upcoming solo album. Alongside tracks from Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and more, Morello will also perform his latest single “Soldier in the Army of Love.” Joining him will be BIG NOTER, the new project from Australian hip-hop icon Briggs, who will bring a raw, punk-infused energy to the stage. It’s a tour filled with rock anthems and much more.
Australian music fans will get to witness Tom Morello live on stage at Bluesfest this year, as well as side shows in Sydney and Melbourne.
Ahead of his Australian tour, Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips spoke to Tom Morello over a zoom call about his career, new music, the Black Sabbath UK concert, AC/DC, and the current political landscape
