Nathaniel first made an impact in Australia when he sailed through to the Top 6 of The X Factor with his soulful, soaring vocals. Following the breakout success of Top 10 hits You and Live Louder, and debut album Yours, Nathaniel has spent the last year living between LA and Melbourne, finding his own identity as an artist. Now the multi-platinum selling artist, returns with a killer new single, Vapours. To accompany the sexy track, Nathaniel also released a hypnotic film clip, directed by Pete Seamons of Epik Films (The Paper Kites, Simple Plan).
Nathaniel took some time out to do a little Q&A for us
What was your first gig?
Singing at an open mic on a Sunday afternoon for the singing school I was going to at the time.
What microphone do you use on stage generally?
Shure Beta 58. It works great with my voice. It brings out a lot of the air and helps my tops cut through the mix much easier.
Is it the same for recording?
No way. I’m a massive Manley and Neumann fan. I normally record on the studio staple U87 but love when there’s a U47 laying around. Older the better (vintage). I own a Manley reference cardioid microphone for my studio. I’m itching to record vocals on a Sony C800 though. That would be a dream! Crazy expensive microphone!
What’s your latest recording and when will you be back in the studio?
My latest recording is my brand new single Vapours out now! I’m always in the studio working away! At least a handful of times every week.
What gigs have you been playing lately?
I’m currently on a club tour around Australia promoting Vapours. Come check it out!
Most memorable gig?
Performing alongside Mariah Carey when I was the support for her Australian tour.
Worst stage nightmare?
Falling off stage! Not once but a few times!
Album that changed your life?
Either…..
Michael Jackson – Off The Wall
Stevie Wonder – Innervisions
What gigs are coming up in the next few months?
Club tour already started! Check my social media and come check it out!
A vocal tip for the kids?
Make sure you get vocal lessons to learn the foundation and fundamentals to do with singing. It isn’t a hard art form once you learn the correct technique to having a strong healthy unique voice.
