Welcome to the first episode of our new interview series called PAIRS, in which we get together not one but two high profile artists for a chat. In episode one, Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips shoots the breeze with acclaimed guitarist, composer Joe Satriani and singer, songwriter and also fabulous guitarist, Orianthi. Check it out as they discuss making live albums, transitioning album tracks to the stage, album track order, signature guitars, cooking and much more.
JOE SATRIANI is without question one of the most influential and respected instrumental musicians to ever strap on a guitar. Joe has just released The Elephants of Mars. It marks the legendary guitarist’s 19th studio album in his 35+year career in music. Satriani’s studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them. His side project, Chickenfoot, featuring former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith saw their debut album certified gold and their second studio album debuted at #9. In September Joe hits the road on his extensive Earth Tour, with American dates through to the end of November and then touring Europe in 2023. In early January Joe presents his much-anticipated G4 Experience workshop for aspiring guitarists in Las Vegas, featuring Peter Frampton, Eric Gales, Alex Skolnick, Steve Lukather, Andy, James, Cory Wong, John 5, Mateus Asato, Nilli Brosh and more. If that’s not enough, Joe has also been creating works of fine art on canvas and on guitars, which he has been exhibiting at galleries throughout the USA. Joe is an Ibanez guitars endorsee and at this year’s NAMM Show released a new signature model, the Ibanez JS2GD in gold.

ORIANTHI is an Australian-born Platinum-selling recording artist and world class guitarist who has just announced a new studio album ‘Rock Candy’, to be released on October 14, 2022 with a new single ‘Light It Up’ from the album out today. The album release follows 2020’s studio record, “O”, which, at the time, was her first new studio album in seven years and her first new music as a solo artist in six years. Sonically, “Rock Candy” is a hard rockin’, blues tinged, display of Orianthi’s dazzling guitar playing and her soulful vocals. Orianthi’s first major solo artist success, as a singer-songwriter and guitarist, was with the Geffen Records release of “According To You,” which is now RIAA-Certified Platinum® and has over 17 million streams on Spotify. Her music’s ability to transcend time and remain relevant cannot be more clear than it’s recent resurgence on TikTok. There are over 83 million views on the “According to You” hashtag making it a viral trend that is introducing Gen Z to Orianthi for the first time in a big way. Career-long fans are used to seeing their favourite world class guitarist playing arenas with rock royalty and global superstars like Michael Jackson, Carlos Santana, Carrie Underwood, Alice Cooper and more. Orianthi also recently released a new live album and DVD, Live From Hollywood, recorded on January 8, 2022 at the Bourbon Room in Hollywood. Late last year Gibson guitars released Orianthi’s signature SJ-200 acoustic guitar and in January PRS released a limited edition Private Stock Orianthi signature electric guitar. Plus, Orange Amps are currently working on a signature combo amp for Ori.
