What was your first gig?
I first started performing in my father’s wedding band when I was a kid. My first original gig was at the Barleycorn Hotel in Collingwood.

What microphone do you use on stage generally?
SM58 Beta

Is it the same for recording?
I’ve used different mics in different studios and with different producers. The last mic I used in studio was the Neumann U87.

What’s your latest recording and when will you be back in the studio?
My latest recording is a folk-pop album called ‘An Easy Escape’ to be released on June 6. I ‘m running a pre-sale for the album through Pledge Music . http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/shelleysegal
I’m excited to be back in the studio in 10 days time to record my next project with producer Robert Upward.

What gigs have you been playing lately?
My last show was at Melbourne Jazz venue, The Paris Cat and was a 4 piece set, with some special guests.

Most memorable gig?
An event called the ‘Reason Rally.’ I played to 30,000 people at the National Mall in Washington DC.

Worst stage nightmare?
Rocking up to a gig with no PA while on tour in the US! Luckily found a music store nearby to hire one.

Album that changed your life?
Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette

What gigs are coming up in the next few months?
I’ll be launching my new album, ‘An Easy Escape’ in Melbourne and Sydney.
June 13 at the Northcote Social Club
June 26 at The Vanguard
I’ll also be playing at the Paynesville Wine Bar on June 28 and Paris Cat July 12

A vocal tip for the kids?
Classical training is such a huge help.  Having a strong technique can really get you through if you have to do a gig when you’re sick or really tired. Also, keep yourself gig fit. Play as much as possible.
