WATCH: HENRY WAGONS TALKS RETURN OF ‘ZEVON – ACCIDENTALLY LIKE A MARTYR’

Pic by Jason Rosewarne

In October 2019 Henry Wagons debuted Zevon – Accidentally Like A Martyr, the fabulous musical tribute to legendary American singer songwriter Warren Zevon. Following a critically acclaimed preview season at The Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne, like everything else, the show and its touring plans came to a crashing halt with arrival of the pandemic. The great news is that it’s back with 3 new shows coming up in late April.

Australian Musician editor caught up with Henry Wagons via zoom to discuss the new run of shows

Known mostly as the ‘Werewolves of London’ guy, Warren Zevon was the songwriter’s songwriter. Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen covered his songs. Linda Ronstadt had massive hits with Poor Poor Pitiful Me and Carmelita. Jackson Browne was his producer and artists such as Bonnie Raitt and key members of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac all lined up to work with the brilliant but often erratic musician. Zevon had a turbulent relationship with loved ones, supporters and the music industry in general, fuelled by alcohol and drugs extravagance, which no doubt contributed to him becoming a cult figure rather than a major star. His songs captured the dark, colourful eccentricities and extremes of Los Angeles, his life and early death.

As pointed out in the Australian Musician review of the show, “‘Zevon – Accidentally Like A Martyr’, is a two act homage to the troubled American rock star and story teller. It’s a loosely structured journey through the life and songs of Warren Zevon, focussing more on the music than the myth. Rather than offer a chronologically accurate fact-fest, Wagons gives us a fan’s view of the world of Warren Zevon, a refreshing and entertaining trip through the Zevon back catalogue. It’s Wagons who is the ‘excitable boy’ and his enthusiasm for the material is infectious.” Read our full show report HERE
