King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard at last year’s awards

The coolest awards show in Australia, the CARLTON DRY INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS will be held on Wednesday October 8th for the first time at North Melbourne’s Historic Meat Market.  In new surrounds for the first time in 3 years, AIR are very excited to be bringing independent music to this heritage-listed venue.

Presented and produced by AIR , the ninth Annual CARLTON DRY INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS event is an opportunity to celebrate the successes of our vibrant and eclectic independent music community.  Past winners include Gotye, Chet Faker, Paul Kelly, Flume, Vance Joy, Urthboy, Hilltop Hoods, Gurrumul, John Butler Trio, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Parkway Drive and Wagons.

With yet another extraordinary year for Independent Artists unfolding, the 2014 crop of Artists have achieved great success both here and overseas which will no doubt be reflected in the voting for this year’s awards.

Alongside the on-going success of previous winners Chet Faker, Flume, Dan Sultan and The Jezabels, the past 12 months also saw the emergence of artists such as Brisbane’s Sheppard whose debut single ‘Geronimo’ has reached Triple Platinum status, and gone on to become one of the highest selling Australian singles of the year. The phenomenal local and international success of Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett – whose swift and steep rise saw her not only playing some of the world’s biggest music festivals but also performing on high profile US TV talk show, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.  This past year saw the long-awaited return of Sia who had a massive comeback year as a performer. We also welcomed homegrown domination by artists such as Rufus and Violent Soho who both produced brilliant and critically acclaimed releases.

It was also a massive year for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the winners of the inaugural CARLTON DRY GLOBAL MUSIC GRANT. The Grant helped fund their 2014 tour of the US, with shows in Dallas, Chicago and Washington, a slot on the legendary Austin Psychfest, residencies in New York City and additional dates in Canada.

Applications are now open for the $50,000 Grant for 2014 and interested artists should check the conditions of entry and review the criteria in full prior to submitting an application here: http://www.air.org.au/awards/carlton-dry-global-music-grant-2014/

With a diverse pool of representatives once again voting this year, from online media, music press, broadcasters, independent music industry representatives and artists themselves, the results will truly reflect the opinions of the collective Independent Music scene.

Awards to be presented during the evening include Best Independent Album, Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album, Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album, and Best Independent Label among others.  Nominees must have material released between August 1st, 2013 and July 31st, 2014, and the recording must be owned by the artist, or by an entirely Australian owned Independent Record Label.

Stay tuned for further announcements including nominations, performing artists, and guest presenters.  For more info on the Awards, Charts and Independent music check out www.air.org.au
