HISTORY REPEATING
The new DD-3T and DD-8 are the latest and greatest echoes from the BOSS ‘big bang’ of the early 1980s. Back then, BOSS’ parent company Roland was blazing a trail in delay technology with the RE-201 Space Echo and rack-mounted SDE-3000 used by household names. But everything changed in 1983 when BOSS engineers discovered the custom IC chip in the SDE-3000 could just about squeeze into the enclosure of a compact pedal. It was a revelation that saw the BOSS DD-2 released later that year becoming the world’s first stompbox digital delay, the first non-analog BOSS pedal, and the first time that working musicians could enjoy that digital delay sound on a budget.
EVOLUTION & REVOLUTION
During the mid-’80s, BOSS continued the quest for the ultimate delay. In 1986, the DD-2 was rebranded as the more-affordable DD-3, becoming a pedalboard mainstay used by everyone—and it would remain in production for over 30 years. When the DD-5 arrived in 1995, some predicted this higher-specced delay would supersede the DD-3, but instead, players picked sides and the quirks of each model attracted armies of loyal fans. Ever since, the two units have existed in parallel, with the DD-3 evolving to become the new DD-3T, while the original DD-5 was refreshed and rebranded as the DD-6 in 2002, the DD-7 in 2008, and now the all-new DD-8.
