Last Wednesday night, VIPs and a few lucky public ticket holders gathered together to welcome The Hummingbird, a brand new classy, dining and entertainment room to Melbourne’s music scene. The new venue is located at 34 Inkerman Street, St.Kilda, downstairs at the Newmarket Hotel.
Guests on the night were wined and dined in style with feisty MC Bev Killick providing the laughs. Special musical guest for the evening was the wonderful Alma Zygier and band, playing pre-war American Songbook jazz standards. Heavily influenced by the female vocal greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday, Alma and quintet delivered a truly memorable performance.
The club actually had an unofficial opening last Monday night when Australian sax legend Joe Camilleri joined local outfit Jazz Funk Collective in a jam. American guitarist Tori Ruffin (Morris Day & The Time, Freak Juice), who was in town with the Nothing Compares 2 Prince tour also hit the stage for a jam.
Other artists performing at The Hummingbird this month include; Nina Ferro, Lake Minnetonka, The Badloves, Phileas Fogg Trio, Sammy J, Grand Wazoo, Renee Geyer and many more
