ROI is the moniker for Brisbane musicians Matt Schrader and Barnaby Gickel and their latest take on collaborative, rhythm-based music. The guys have already gained much kudos for the first tune they delivered ‘Maths and Engineering”, described by Triple J’s Dave Ruby Howe as “amazing, chilling and affecting”. ROI’s debut album August City will be released this Friday, May 20th with a home town album launch show on Sunday 22nd at The Brightside Brisbane.
Releasing any inhibitions of which music they ‘should’ create, ROI let loose their creativity in a project that doesn’t stick to a guidebook which was helped by Konstantin Kersting’s (The Belligerents, Tia Gostelow) impeccable producing Airlock Studios. During the recording for the forthcoming album, they brought in multiple vocalists and ditched guitar all together to focus more on bass drums, keyboards, and other production elements. The recordings are a testament to their eclectic music taste in rock, funk, folk, and jazz while all remaining a cohesive body of work that remains true to itself and the artists vision of emotion driven songwriting.
In this exclusive video chat, Matt and Barnaby explain the origins of the band and discuss the experience of putting ‘August City’ together.
