Shannon Bourne band

The Flying Saucer Club at the Caulfield RSL has quickly become one of Melbourne’s most favoured music destinations. Leading up to Christmas, there is a fantastic array of performances happening at the venue including The Models performing two classic albums over two nights, Jack Howard & The Ambassadors of Love play Bacharach, Grand Wazoo’s Christmas Soul Special, and there’s the Shannon Bourne band letting loose on more Hendrix licks, when they play the ‘Band of Gypsys’ album.

Anyone who witnessed the wonderful Shannon Bourne Does Hendrix  performance at this year’s Melbourne Guitar Show (see snippet below) or his ‘Axis: Bold As Love’ show at the Flying Saucer Club earlier this year, might want to head down to the Flying Saucer in December for more.

Shannon Bourne returns to the Flying Saucer Club with his band on Sunday 13th December to showcase Hendrix’s first live album, ‘Band of Gypsys’. Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Band Of Gypsys’ album was a real statement of the times; there was the hope of peace and love at a time when the Vietnam War was being fought. A message of love carries through most of the album, but then comes the darkness and sonic devastation that is “Machine Gun” (a guitar aficionado’s dream). This album certainly resonates just as much today as it did in 1970. Recorded live over two consecutive nights in 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City. This is the first recording without the original line-up of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, who split only 6 months prior. Shannon Bourne and his band weave their way through this incredible album. The slinky grooves of “Who Knows”, the intricate riffage of “The Power Of Soul” and the sonic obliteration of “Machine Gun” as well as re-imagining some of Jimi Hendrix’s other better-known tracks.

bachIf you prefer your music, a little more lounge-like, you can catch Jack Howard & the Ambassadors of Love play Bacharach this Sunday at at the Flying Saucer Club. Alongside a stellar line-up of musicians, Jack will present a show full of soul and heart. The songs of Burt Bacharach are undeniable – ‘The Look of Love’, ‘Alfie’, ‘Say A Little Prayer’, ‘Close To You’, ‘What The World Needs Now’

Another not to be missed band at the Flying Saucer Club will be The Models when they play the entire ‘Local&/or General’ album on December 11 and then ‘The Pleasure of Your Company’ album the next night December 12. Check out the venue’s website for more great shows
