SNIPPETZ – THURSDAY APRIL 11, 2024

We get so many pitches from artists, labels and management and just don’t have the resources to do major features on them all. With Snippetz, we can get across the main points of the artist’s news and give them some kind of exposure on a fairly regular basis. We’ll try to focus on Australian artists and labels but there will be some occasional international news items too. We hope that this new section helps to get your music out there!

Snippetz – Thursday April 11, 2024

SARAH CARROLL – ‘Diamond In The Mine’ (Single/Launch ) New album ‘NQR&B’ out July 5
Ex-Melbourne, now Bellarine Peninsula-based singer-songwriter and roots-music luminary Sarah Carroll, known for her work with the likes of GIT, The Pirates Of Beer, Soft Gold, The Left Wing, The Junes and The Cartridge Family, her work with her late husband, the legendary harmonica player and singer-songwriter Chris Wilson and sons Fenn Wilson and George Carroll Wilson, and her decades of broadcasting and music writing experience, is set to release her new solo album NQR&B on July 5 through Cheersquad Records & Tapes. Sarah delivers a preview of the record in the form of the album’s first single, “Diamond in the Mine”, which is out today.

Sarah is an individual who simply oozes musicality: a gorgeous, soulful singer, a beautiful instrumentalist, and someone who has an intrinsic understanding of all manner of roots music. Her songs chime with sincerity and deal largely with her experiences as a teacher, mother, wife, political animal and touring musician, and NQR&B is a collection which celebrates her great loves and her singular life.
First single “Diamond in the Mine”, a sweet country blues swamper set to a spare but funky backbeat, sets the tone perfectly for the honest reflection and compassion sewn into the songs.

Sarah and her band The Big Fuss are set to launch “Diamond in the Mine” on Saturday April 27 at the Coburg RSL. They are sharing the evening with one of Sarah’s guests on the album Jackie Marshall, who is launching her new album You are Not Too Much And You Are Enough on the night as well. Special guest on the night is Mastaneh Nazarian. Tickets are available here

THIS WAY NORTH – ‘Hell Of A Mess’ (Single)
This Way North are releasing the third single ‘Hell of a Mess’ from their long-awaited and already beloved debut album, ‘Punching Underwater’. This track takes a turn from the first two indie-rock drenched songs from the album; ‘Hell of a Mess’ is a slick indie-POP anthem about ‘love’ making everyone crazy.

With nods to Haim, LCD Sound System and The Beaches, Hell of a Mess will have your heart exploding with the nostalgic relief that comes with being past that heightened state. You’ll sink into the overwhelming feeling of knowing exactly what it is like to be in the whirlwind of new love and all of its bumps, bruises, and big feels. Leisha’s deep memorising bass lines and Cat’s tight grooves culminate in an excellent 80’s crunchy nostalgic guitar solo to bring about the soaring feeling of living with your head and heart in the clouds.

This two-piece indie pop-rock band appreciates open space and adventure. Full of rapturous nostalgia, This Way North’s music takes you from moody, tremolo-tinged heart-tuggers to pounding driving alt-psych rock through a sonic landscape of reverb-soaked guitars and rolling rhythms. With odes to 90’s rock sitting on air-tight grooves and full, cinematic spaciousness, This Way North’s music is a portal to summer festivals, their love affair with the road, and an open invitation to turn up the volume and let loose.

This Way North are launching and touring a new album in 2024 throughout Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe & UK.

THE DOUBLE AGENTS – ‘If Ya Don’t Mind’ (Single). Album ‘New Motion’ out June 21
Melbourne/Naarm rockers The Double Agents return with their long-awaited third studio album, New Motion, out June 21 on Yeah/Nah Records. New Motion is a powerful new recording evoking directness and immediacy, marking their first release of new material in nearly two decades.

Today’s news comes with the release of the lead single from New Motion, If Ya Don’t Mind, available now via your preferred DSP here. If Ya Don’t Mind drives relentlessly in the spirit of Celibate Rifles with the familiar dual vocal attack of Dave and Kim, culminating in a 16-bar explosion, augmented by Ryan Tandy’s lead guitar, summoning the spirit of the late, great NY Punk visionary Robert Quine.

On the track guitarist, Dave Butterworth says, “This was the first ‘new’ song I’d written in over 10 years of barely picking up my guitar. It came to me while standing in a rehearsal room in February of last year. I had a renewed passion for music since my heavy cancer diagnosis just before this night. I’d been listening to non-stop Dr. Feelgood, and I felt the spirit of Wilko Johnson kind of flowing through me… It seems ‘wanky,’ but that’s how it felt to me. The fact that it turned out to be more of a twisted Oz punk thumper surprised me. This song was the impetus to make more!”

The five-piece will celebrate the release of New Motion with a special, one-off, intimate show on Saturday, July 13, at The John Curtin Hotel. Tickets on sale Thursday, April 19 at 9am here.

New Motion, is out June 21 on Yeah/Nah Records, pre-order the album here. If Ya Don’t Mind, is out today and is available on all streaming platforms here.

OHMS – ‘Bimbo’s Inferno’ (Single)
A fantastical journey welding art rock, progressive rock, synth pop and more, the brand new single Bimbo’s Inferno out today from boundless Melbourne creative Ohms is an intricate and unpredictable ride that marks a first single ahead of a, yet to be announced, full length album.

Peeling layers of oscillating genres and foreboding yet playful theatricality, Bimbo’s Inferno also dazzles with starry-eyed melodics interplaying between sudden sinister stylistic shifts. A pop song at its core immersed in woozy vocals and intergalactic instrumentation, Bimbo’s Inferno never wholeheartedly commits to any one genre for long, instead finding Ohms, aka Melbourne artist Hugo Ivers, exploring inspiration from a galaxy of sonic corners, including R. Stevie Moore, MGMT, XTC, The Cleaners From Venus and the early works of of Montreal. “I think I was just so attracted to the intricacies, both subtle and glaring in all their respective works, it made me think to myself “hey, great music doesn’t have to follow a particular formula if I don’t want it to!”. It excited me deeply to think that I could try my hand at composing something simultaneously pop-centric, and completely unconventional.”

With instrumentation performed dominantly by Ohms himself, who also took on the producer’s role, Bimbo’s Inferno also brought together additional instrumentation recorded by Timothy Dunn, drums recorded by Stu McKenzie, mixing by Ohms and Andrew Robinson at Rolling Stock Studios, and mastering by Mikey Young. And amid the long journey to finally releasing his new single, Ohms drew inspiration from his surrounds in Melbourne, conjuring an unsettling personal nightlife experience into musical form via Bimbo’s Inferno. “It’s not really inspired by anyone, but rather just a tongue-in-cheek pop song about my ineptitude to engage in Melbourne nightlife,” shares Ohms. “I was, and still am, somewhat of a creature of habit, finding more comfort in working on projects by myself into the wee hours, rather than hitting up various pubs and clubs. I remember a rare occurrence years ago where I emerged for a night out with friends, feeling like a fish out of water as we traversed the streets of the inner northern suburbs. I always had some strange, foreboding sense of paranoia once the sun died out and entered the evening. Anyway, the following day I read an article about the same bar we drank at burning down that very night. Suffice to say I didn’t head out on the town for a number of months following that.”

Bimbo’s Inferno is out now.

BLICK BASSY Feat RY X – ‘MBONDI’ (Single)
This week marks the return of France-based Cameroonian singer-songwriter Blick Bassy who has just released his collaborative single with Australian artist Ry X titled ‘Mbondi’. Translating to ‘flower’ in the Bassa language, this track represents a significant milestone as the first joint effort between these two remarkable talents. ‘Mbondi’ will be added to the deluxe edition of Bassy’s recent album, ‘Madíbá’, when it is released in May this year as ‘Madíbá’ ni Mbondi’ (‘Water and Flower’).

‘Mbondi’ invites listeners on a captivating musical journey, where soulful vocals intertwine with contemporary synths to create a mesmerising auditory landscape filled with rich textures and soothing melodies.

“I have always claimed my status as an African musician, but also the contemporary aspect of my approach. In African musical culture, there is unfortunately little of this type of work on the sound itself, on the exploration of new techniques. I would like to position myself as an African avant-garde artist who, with each of his new projects, offers new ideas in the treatment of sound and melody.”

‘Mbondi’ is out on Tuesday, April 9th

RATTLINCANE – ‘ Empty Car Parks’ (Single)
Every now and then a band comes along that is hard to put the usual labels on and Rattlincane are one such band, with a sound that is unapologetically genuine and profoundly raw.

Out of the northern suburbs of Melbourne, the band weaves earthy melodies with honest stories from the fields of their lives. They craft a musical tapestry that defies genres, and delivers a familiar yet fresh and captivating sound. Some say it is country with a bit of rock, others say it’s rock with a bit of country, but we say it is Rattlincane.

The four members of Rattlincane are working class guys who have been long time mates. They share a unique bond that runs through their friendship and right into their music. However, it is their live performances that really make this band shine.

A Rattlincane show oozes quality songwriting and musicianship, with great storytelling  at it’s core. A driving rhythm section and guitar riffs, along with 3-way harmonies, round out the experience, giving Rattlincane a sound that is full and rich.

Already with five independent albums under their belts, and a brand new sixth album due for release, Rattlincane have quite a catalogue of original songs, each conveying real life experiences.

DIANNE COOMBES – ‘The Backsteps’ (Single)
This song is written about my place of contentment and reflection. My place to count the blessings in life – the old back steps of home, just as evening came in.  Angus Gill’s production of the song is exceptional, incorporating musicians from Australia and Nashville.

“Hi, I’m Dianne Coombes. I have loved music and singing since I can remember.  Our family get togethers were always a musical affair as all my uncles and aunt played instruments or sang and there are recordings of me singing at these events when I was 5 yrs old.

My Dad played in dance bands all my life and I grew up invading band rehearsals at every opportunity when Mum had her back turned.  I sang with my Dad’s band from the age of 14 at all the country hall dances and balls, although I had to be 16 before I was allowed to sing on stage at the local RSL.

I was raised and still reside at Macksville in the Nambucca Valley, a small town with a big heart.  Marrying at 21 I put music on hold while starting a family.  I spent 4 years as a single mum raising two amazing daughters which had it’s difficulties but also forged my girls and I into the ‘3 Muskateers’, a bond which is still a force to be reckoned with today.

I married for a second time to the most amazing man God put breath into and he became our rock.   He and my girls encouraged and supported my return to Music and during this time I went from singing at local venues to appearing at many events and festivals up and down the Coast.

In 2016 I released my debut album ‘Walk With Me’ which contained 12 songs, 8 of which were originals that I felt documented my life up until that point.  To my delight it received great reviews and won prestigious awards.  2016 was also the year my darling  husband died of lung cancer and my world was shattered.  Music then became my refuge and I poured myself into songwriting in an attempt to survive my grief.
My songwriting is inspired by observing nature and the beautiful place we call home as well as my own life experience, so it truly lays me open and bare in a way that I hope others can relate to. I hope they hear my songs and feel the echoes of emotions and experiences from their own lives.

7 years further down the track and I have just completed a body of work that I am really proud of.  My new album titled ‘Ripples’  is a testament to the privilege of experiences and love in my life and the amazing vision, songwriting and production skills of Angus Gill.  It’s a country/ folk album full of stories of life and love and inspiration.  I hope you enjoy and let the Ripples go on……..

ELSIE LANGE – ‘Sally’ (Single)
Elsie Lange’s new single, “Sally”, was an attempt at learning how to love making music again – and it worked. The first taste of a forthcoming album, “Sally” is one of a suite of songs Elsie has written and performed with her band since 2021. Sally is a new one in the line up, written while completing a challenge she set herself to write one song a day using tips from Jeff Tweedy’s renowned songwriting bible ‘How To Write One Song’.

Elsie explains: “I can’t say how much Wilco, and Tweedy’s book, has inspired my current production inspiration and songwriting – I needed someone and something to remind me how important music is to me, and how accessible it is.”

“I was actually doing the challenge on tiktok, trying and failing not to be a cringe millennial on the platform. But people were responding and that was hugely encouraging. Once I put my guitar in a different tuning and used one of Tweedy’s lyric-writing exercises, Sally basically wrote itself. I think the pandemic, and the constant letdown of gig cancellations and an inability to get out there and promote my music, really took a toll on me. I struggled to even pick up the guitar. I hated all the lyrics I was writing. Everything was shit. I’m so grateful my songwriting came back.”

Elsie Lange is a folk-pop singer/songwriter from Naarm/Melbourne. She forms part of indie-pop band Local Derby and in the past fronted garage-pop band pting while performing live with Elizabeth. Listen to Sally here https://lnk.to/elsielange

BLACK RHENO Announce East Coast Tour
Sydney’s heavy groove merchants, Black Rheno, are gearing up for a massive East Coast tour this May with a lineup of killer support acts just announced. Black Rheno is currently riding high, having recently journeyed to Austin, Texas, to record a new album with heavyweight rock/metal producer “Machine the Producer” (known for his work with bands like Clutch, Every Time I Die, Lamb Of God and more). They also recently had the honour of supporting one of heavy metal’s most influential and iconic bands, PANTERA at Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Receiving rave reviews across the board from their excursion with Pantera, Black Rheno delivered an electrifying opening performance of the night, showcasing the high-octane live show they are renowned for. Later that evening, members of Black Rheno and King Parrot joined Pantera on stage, contributing gang vocals to the legendary tune “Walk.” It was a true celebration of the heavy grooves we have all grown up with and a unifying moment for fans, bands, and everyone involved.

While there is no official release date for the new Black Rheno record yet, anticipation is building. However, the band can’t wait and is eager to hit the road again after too long a hiatus between tours. Still energised from their monumental experience supporting Pantera, Black Rheno will be bringing their full-blown audio assault to venues across the East Coast this May. Fans can expect a sneak peek of new tunes from the upcoming record during these shows too.

SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE – ‘Soft Signal’ (EP)
Multi-instrumentalist Sunbeam Sound Machine today announces a surprise new EP to be released this Friday, 12th April alongside today’s lush lead single ‘Creatures’. The Soft Signal EP precedes a string of live video content series.

Soft Signal sees Sunbeam Sound Machine – the moniker of Nick Sowersby – embrace new attitudes and techniques as he grapples with parenthood. Recorded late at night during his first year of fatherhood, the EPs four songs offer a contrast to Sowersby’s signature lush sound, pairing it back to just guitar, vocals, drum machine and a smattering of synthesiser. Sowersby expands saying “I would record late at night after my daughter had fallen asleep, which naturally lent itself to a quieter, more minimal kind of production. The songs relect on a big life change but also look towards the future.” The result is an introspective and meditative collection of songs upon human connection.

In place of his usual rich dreamscapes, ‘Creatures’ is a leisurely meditation in dreamy restraint  navigating the beauty and complexities of ideas of growth and change.

Across his career, Sunbeam Sound Machine has evolved into a unique sonic landscape that has been lauded for its blend of beauty and melancholy, and its embrace of expansive arrangements and ideas. Since debut album Wonderer served to introduce the project back in 2014, Sunbeam Sound Machine has amassed over 57 million worldwide streams and beautifully resonated with audiences in Australia and abroad; particularly in the United States, where Wonderer’s release on the Echo Drug Recordings opened Sowersby up to what remains one of his most successful territories to date.

A snapshot of a period of change, Soft Signal stands as a continuation of Sowersby’s explorative perspective as a musician and writer.

KIRSTY LEE AKERS – “Girls Are Why The West Is Wild.”  (Single)
In the realm where melodies meet magic, 2 time Golden Guitar winner and star of The Block – Kirsty Lee Akers strides forth in her Cowgirl Era, a spirit woven with threads of the wild frontier.

Welcoming the dawn of 2024, Kirsty unveils her latest ode, “Girls Are Why The West Is Wild.” A song for the cowgirls, the untamed hearts and the daring souls who roam free.

Penned in Nashville alongside hit songwriters Kirsti Manna and Bill DiLuigi, this anthem marries grit with grace. “In June of last year, I attended a co-writing session in Nashville. Arriving a little early, I found Bill DiLuigi already there. Although we had just met, it was clear that Bill had done his homework and understood me as an artist. While waiting for Kirsti to join us, Bill shared an idea he had, which I instantly loved. Before long, we had a chorus ready. When Kirsti arrived, she quickly added her touch of magic,” Kirsty shares.

Once again, Kirsty steps into the producer’s role alongside co-producer Paul Bain to breathe life into this track. With the banjo strings harmonizing with Kirsty’s vocals, creating a blend reminiscent of Dolly Parton and Lainey Wilson, each listener is sure to remember the moment when they first heard “Girls Are Why The West Is Wild.”

“Girls Are Why The West Is Wild” will be released on April 12th and available for streaming on all platforms.

NELSON MATHEWS – ‘Falling’ (Single)
On the face of it, Nelson Mathews’ music falls into the alternative category, the type of ‘alternative’ that’s grounded in a strong melodic pop sensibility.  You keep detecting trace elements of his musical cornerstones – think John Cale, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth or, closer to home, Ed Kuepper and Hunters & Collectors.  The range of styles contained on his upcoming album Unthinkable are hinted at on the title track (and first single). The darker side of a complex childhood is explored on the half sung, half spoken verses, which then make way for an uplifting, anthem like climax, replete with female backing vocals and brass.
Nelson Mathews’ Falling is the second single of his remarkable debut album Unthinkable. This infectious, beautifully melodic, groove-laden pop song further demonstrates the diversity and range of this unique artist.

Mathews calls it his “unashamed pop moment” and says “despite the synth-lightness, it’s driven by more guitar riffs than any other song on the album”

“Recording the drums and bass live in the studio was the key to locking in the groove. Luke used his short scale ’71 Fender Mustang Bass which complements the 80’s synth bass perfectly”.

Mathews is referring to the very talented Luke Hodgson (“bass player to the stars”) who just last week completed a tour with music legend Todd Rundgren.

THE MYSTERINES – ‘Sink ya Teeth’ (Single)
Merseyside alternative rock band The Mysterines have released a thrilling new single ‘Sink Ya Teeth’, the second track to be taken from their highly-anticipated new album Afraid of Tomorrows, due for release on 7th June via Fiction Records.

Underpinned by a heavy bass riff with a steady, danceable drumbeat and topped off with front woman Lia Metcalfe’s powerhouse vocals, ‘Sink Ya Teeth’ shows the band at the height of their powers.

Lia comments on the song: “Sink Ya Teeth is a testament to the brutality of real love. Written during a time where the boundaries of pain and passion were warped amidst the chaos of addiction and desire.”

Formed in Liverpool, The Mysterines – front woman Lia Metcalfe, drummer Paul Crilly, bassist George Favager and guitarist Callum Thompson – have undergone a radical transformation over the past few years. Fresh with new purpose and reinvigorated from songwriting sessions while secluded away in the countryside (in between playing to 60,000-strong crowds while on tour with the Arctic Monkeys), the band are now about to release the best music of their career.

The Mysterines are set to embark on their biggest headline tour to date this Autumn. The 16-date run will kick off in Dublin on 18th October and include a stop at London’s iconic O2 Shepherds Bush Empire, culminating in Paris on 8th November. Multiple dates are already sold out.

THE LITTLE LORD STREET BAND – ‘Time And Place’ (Single/Video)
Offering an unfiltered glimpse into the world of Western Australia’s Alt-Country outfit, The Little Lord Street Band are pairing their album title track ‘Time And Place’ with a stroll down memory lane with the warming accompanying music video.

Celebrating 10 years of The Little Lord Street Band with their sophomore album ‘Time And Place’ on April 22, it is only fitting that they’ve pieced together a music video that is a beautiful look at their humble lives.

With its laid-back, quintessential country-blues atmosphere that explores longing for purpose amidst the backdrop of suburban life, the reflective, monochrome music video is a collage of their time moving through parenthood, road trips, band practice, and just killing time.

It stands as a touching tribute to life’s simple joys, finding beauty in the every day and the profound experiences that shape us, even amidst monotony. We can always trust The Little Lord Street Band to deliver something that stirs a laugh while drawing a tear.

Solidifying their place in the Australian alt-country and music landscape, their sophomore album release promises another decade of cherished memories. ALLY ROW – ‘I Got Mine’ (Single)
Gunaikurnai/Gippsland based urban-pop-folk rock duo Ally Row have just released their toe-tapping and catchy new single ‘I Got Mine’.

The track celebrates each individual’s personal struggle, with the hook “you’ve got your shit and I’ve got mine”.  Deceptively, ‘I Got Mine’ shows all the hallmarks of a light hearted and uplifting folk tune, however at its core this track exudes heavy and poignant lyricism.

The Triple J Unearthed winners dive into their own experiences of mental health, living under the poverty line and recovering from personal loss.

The single’s husky vocals, playful banjo and buoyant instrumentation, creates a positive and safe atmosphere for the listener.

“We wrote this while spending a night in a tiny house in east Gippsland after a gig. It’s a warm reminder to practice empathy because we tend to compare ourselves to others who seem to have it better than us….but you never know what other people are going through.”

CAT & CALMELL – ‘Give Urself 2 Me’ (Single)
Cat & Calmell are set to ignite dance floors with their latest single, “give urself 2 me.” LISTEN HERE

The infectious track, born from a wild, hungover session post-Cat’s birthday bash in Melbourne, encapsulates the duo’s desire to let loose and embrace the fun side of life. “We really wanted to have fun and let our hair down for this new era,” says Cat & Calmell. “After such a heavy project last year, ‘give urself 2 me’ is a symbol of us growing up and wanting to be HOT young women and party after ALL the heavy shit.”

Producer Lucy Blomkamp expertly captures their energy, delivering a tune that’s trashy, cheeky, and irresistibly fun – a true Icona Pop inspired anthem for the modern era, with diverse influences from Asian icons of the ’90s to European Hyperpop.

The music video, directed by Cat Strat, is visual feast that perfectly captures the spontaneous and energetic essence of the song.
