SNIPPETZ – THURSDAY MARCH 21, 2024

We get so many content pitches from artists, labels and management and just don’t have the resources to do major features on them all. With Snippetz, we can get across the main points of the artist’s news and give them some kind of exposure on a fairly regular basis. We’ll try to focus on Australian artists and labels but there will be some occasional international news items too. We hope this new section helps to get your music out there!

SNIPPETZ – Thursday March 21, 2024

ERIC BAZILIAN (THE HOOTERS) & TANIA DOKO (BACHELOR GIRL) – ‘One of Us’ (Single/Tour)
International artists/songwriters Eric Bazilian & Tania Doko share more than artistry, song writing and live performing in common – they are forever bonded by their Scandinavian ‘second home’ – Sweden.   It’s been almost 40 years since Eric toured Australia with U.S hit makers The Hooters, fronting his band to the present day, enjoying sell out tours in Europe and the US.  The parallel with Tania Doko is uncanny. Also lead singer of much-loved Bachelor Girl (“Buses & Trains”), the most played Australian composition on Australian radio over the last 25 years), the band still boasts frequent bookings on the Australian festival circuit, sharing bills with heavyweights as John Farnham, Icehouse, and Simple Minds.

To celebrate the tour, Eric and Tania have combined vocal forces on a unique arrangement of “One of Us”, produced by Eric. It will be the lead track from their forthcoming album, also titled “HERS, HIS & OURS”, and will consist of original composition demos Eric and Tania created in Stockholm, Sweden between 2011-2019.

GIRL FRIDAY & THE SEPIA TONES – ‘I’ll Take My Leave’ (Single)
This is the first single from Girl Friday’s forthcoming second full-length album. With a junkyard jazz feel reminiscent of Kurt Weill and Tom Waits, this is a tale of restrained revenge in the form of a song. The classy and sassy trombone line from Ellie Lamb brings the song to life, alerting the listener to a certain playfulness in the lyrics and trajectory of the tale.

Hobart-born and Melbourne-based award winning (Maldon Folk Festival 2016) singer/songwriter Girl Friday (Tracey Hogue) will transport you to a different era.  Her folk, jazz and blues sensibility evokes a sense of nostalgia, innocence and whimsy. Girl Friday’s rich, soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics remind us that people have felt and sung about the same things forever and a day. This calibre of songwriting never goes out of style.

Produced by Odetta Records (Megan Bird and Chelsea Allen of Great Aunt), the track also features Andrew Tanner (Vulgargrad) on double bass, Ash Jones (Miguel Rios, Matt Malone) on violin and a bevvy of backing vocalists with Megan and Chelsea also playing on the track (banjo and drums respectively).

TRASH SPRINGFIELD – ‘Everythings Alright’ (Single)
Trash talks of the story behind Everything’s Alright, from her debut album, Escape From Those Who Care. “I wrote Everythings Alright when I was 18 during a peculiar time in my life. It’s about how you can’t try to dictate someone’s life then get mad when being powerless to control the way they cope. This song enabled me to say everything I wanted to say to a certain person whilst denying them the opportunity to interrupt and tell me I was wrong for being upset.

What was meant to be poetic and trivial in tone, turned out to be crazed and cathartic allowing me to truly confess how I felt.”

After delighting us w/ her ‘Early Signs’ EP, Sydney’s Trash Springfield returns w/ her maiden album, ‘Escape From Those Who Care.’ Trash’s range is really on show here w/ solemn confessionals adjacent to funky party songs and brooding ballads riding shotgun w/ chugging rock songs
A very mature and impressive album from a woman who just turned 23, “Escape From Those Who Care,’ seems destined for plenty of airplay and attention. STREAM AND DOWNLOAD ENTIRE ALBUM AUDIO AS WAV AND MP3 HERE

MADDIE JACKWAY – ‘Kindred’ (EP out April 5th)
Geelong-based singer-songwriter Maddie Jackway has announced that her sophomore EP, Kindred, will be released on all digital streaming platforms on Friday 5th April, 2024. Jackway unveiled the lead single, You Make Me Look Over My Shoulder, to accompany the EP announcement. The mid-tempo, Pop-R&B-Soul track features haunting electronic elements and dissonant vocal harmonies while lyrically detailing being ghosted by someone and the anxiety of when their paths will cross again. The song showcases an evolved sound from the singer-songwriter and leaves much to anticipate for the new EP.

Jackway describes the new body of work as a shift from her first release and explains: “I’ve always said that I won’t be boxed into onegenre and this EP really shows that – you can hear all of my different influences as a writer and musician.”

ESKIMO JOE – ‘The First Time’ (Single/Tour)
A buoyant yet bittersweet ode to nostalgia, Australian alternative rock icons Eskimo Joe return armed with The First Time; the band’s first new music since 2021’s 99 Ways. Set to appear at Lookout Festival alongside Live and Incubus before embarking on their National Acoustic Theatre Tour starting this April, The First Time feels familiar yet fresh, with Eskimo Joe capturing the essence of their stadium rock-ready triumph, 2008’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine, alongside some sharp 2024 vigour.

Drawing inspiration from long-time Eskimo Joe creative influences as well as the band’s unshakeable bond, the core of The First Time also evolved following a stacked 2023, with multiple festival appearances sparking the trio to harness the energy of a giant crowd setting into their 2024-penned new track. “We really look up to bands like the Rolling Stones and U2 – those guys who keep touring and creating music over and over again,”shares bass player and vocalist Kav Temperley. “It makes us proud of our musical journey and the people who have taken our songs into their lives. Eskimo Joe is still the three core members. It just wouldn’t be the Eskies without the three of us in a studio or on stage making music together – our friendship is as much a part of the band as the music itself. After an amazing 2023 of playing some huge festivals, there’s this indescribable energy when a massive crowd is singing your songs back at you. We wanted to capture that energy and infuse it into our recording. So, in the first week of January this year, over five days we wrote and recorded The First Time at my studio in Fremantle.” Listen: THE FIRST TIME

 KEVIN SULLIVAN – ‘Threeways’ (Single)
Threeways” is a song that evokes the driving heartbeat of the Australian Outback, the arid landscape, the culture, and the overall welcoming nature of its people. The general feel of the song “Threeways”, calls the traveller to stop and visit an iconic roadhouse in a remote part of the world, staffed by backpackers and used as an oasis on the journey of those traversing the red centre of Australia.
After line-dancing around the world with their song, “The Stroll”, Singer/songwriter Kevin Sullivan and his family band The Sulli-Vans are encouraging people from Australia and all over the world, to head Down Under, to our Aussie Outback, with his latest single “Threeways”, the title track to his new album out this year.
Kevin Sullivans new album, “THREEWAYS” is also due for release this year and audiences can expect songs  telling the stories of real people, places and causes that have inspired the singer songwriter in his music.

CANNON – ‘Lithium Springs’ (Single) ‘Comet’s Coming’ (Album out June 14)
Cannon is back with a new album, Comet’s Coming; a thought-provoking slab of alternative rock set to drop June 14 via Cheersquad Records and Tapes. After a hiatus following their debut release in 2021, Melbourne / Naarm’s much loved three-piece make a triumphant return with sophisticated themes of mortality, escapism, and excess.

The first taste of the new album, which was recorded by Fabian Hunter (Jade Imagine, Baby Blue), is the punchy single, ‘Lithium Springs’. Lithium Springs is a play on America’s Lithia Springs, and seemingly Cannon’s holiday destination of choice. Singer, Mitchy McIvor, reckons “it’s as close to a summer beach song as we’ll get, and we still end up in a spring laced with natural lithium – that’s about right for us.”
The band are excited to be releasing new music again and see this new offering as an exciting step forward. McIvor explains, “with this record we made a conscious effort to apply a stripped back approach to production and combine our usual abrasive tension with more complex layers.”

THE DAISYCUTTERS – ‘I’m Not the One Who Wants To Be Friends’ (Single/Video)
The Daisycutters are a quartet responsible for some of the most ‘hummable’ tunes to come out of QLD in the last 2 decades.
“I’m Not the One Who Wants To Be Friends” is the latest single from the ‘BECOME WHAT YOU ARE’ album. Released via MGS Music, ‘Become What You Are’ was recorded by the band’s longtime producer JeffLovejoy at Black Box Studios in Brisbane and mastered by Matthew Gray.  “This is the first album we’ve ever written from scratch. In the past we’ve always had songs written, but this time we wrote them all specifically for the album,” The Daisycutters frontman Cameron Wilson says.

“We were lucky enough to be allowed to indulge all of our sonic desires, and it was also the most enjoyable recording process I can remember. I think now we are older we really enjoy the process of recording rather than just trying to ‘freight train’ through to completion.”

SEX ON TOAST – ‘Another One’ (Single out March 27)
Iconic enigma Sex on Toast have a new single titled Another One. Its serious musical talent meets infectious jovial energy, lolling between the realms of soul, funk, and theatrical rock – out Wednesday 27 March.

DOLLY DAGGER – ‘Tower’ (Single out April 10)
Just six months after dropping her well-received EP Nightmare, the momentum is building behind this Aussie-born singer who produced, directed, and edited the video for her upcoming new single Tower. Also, her current collaboration with guitarist Jesse McInturff and producer Louie Diller is proving to be a fiery collaboration. With stunning Renaissance visuals to backdrop this haunting, heavy rock song, Dolly proves that she is packing the talent to do battle with the best of them.

“We started working on this track late last year in (2023) as the EP was wrapping up, we had the opportunity to work with Louie Diller so we had a few writing sessions all together and it was such a blast, “ says Dolly. “Louie is an absolute legend and it was really fun to add fresh ears into our writing sessions that are usually just myself and Jesse but we can’t sing his praises enough, we love what we came up with. It was really exciting to be working on the EP release and working on this follow up single at the same time, it felt really productive as far as momentum goes. Often, being an independent artist can come with timeline drawbacks when you’re trying to juggle every element of your career and stay focused on releasing music consistently with limited resources and funds, seeing what we can achieve while we’re working on an EP release had us pumped to keep ahead of ourselves and find the best methods of making sure we stay ahead so we’re really chuffed with how we’ve been upholding that!”

The LA-based artists is soon returning to Australia for some rest and recuperation, as well as shows.

“I love being home and splitting my time as much as I can so I’ll keep updating about shows or events, especially for the summer in Australia this year. We’re cooking up as I type! We have a show at The Whisky on Sunday June 2nd and more to announce in the greater LA area soon, as well as new releases, videos and merch. https://www.dollydaggerxo.com/

SIERRA FERRELL – ‘American Dreaming’ (Single/Video) ‘Trail of Flowers’ (Album out March 22)
“Wake up again in an old motel, is it somewhere different? I can’t tell. Every set of curtains opens to the open road…”: This Friday, March 22nd, Sierra Ferrell will release Trail of Flowers, and in those very first lines of “American Dreaming,” the album’s opening number and final preview, she sets the scene for a remarkable journey of resilience. In her transformation from train-hopping vagabond to viral sensation, Sierra Ferrell has honed her strange, spellbinding strain of musical magic in trailer parks, dive bars, truck stops, street corners and everywhere in between. While her ragged path and nomadic past have now led to her proving herself as a generational talent, she introduces Trail of Flowers by reflecting on a continued struggle to build a life in a culture consumed by capitalism. As the arrangement erupts into beautiful crashes of steel guitar, banjo, piano, celeste, and backing vocals from Lukas Nelson and Melody Walker, Ferrell showcases her extraordinary capacity to merge timeless musicianship with modern concerns, reckoning with loneliness, happiness and sorrows in her warm, world-weary rasp.

“Sometimes when you’re working long and hard to try to live that American Dream, you forget what you’re doing it for,” says Ferrell of the song. “In my situation, I end up being out on the road so much that I don’t get to spend a lot of time in my own home, taking care of my cat and dog and watering my plants and cooking meals on my stove. I’m always so excited and thankful to play music for people, but sometimes it feels hard to be gone all the time.”

Listen to “American Dreaming” via Rounder Records, and step into Sierra Ferrell’s wondrous world in the music video, following yesterday’s premiere on CMT Music and the Paramount Times Square Billboard: https://found.ee/SFAmericanDreamingOfficialVideo

THE REYTONS (UK) (Tour)
After an intense tour down under in 2023, UK indie juggernauts The Reytons are set to return with a bang. Fresh from selling out fields and arenas in the UK, the self-made ‘kids off the estate’ will be bringing their non-stop energy to five raucous shows in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne this September and October.

The Reytons have quickly become one of the UK’s premiere indie bands since the release of their debut album ‘Kids Off The Estate’ back in 2021. Fiercely independent since their inception, the band quickly rose to fame following their sophomore album ‘What’s Rock And Roll?’ which topped the UK albums chart back in early 2023.

The band have racked up an impressive 130m+ streams on Spotify, with countless sell out tours across the UK and Europe – including a sold out show in Sheffield’s Utilita Arena (which happens to hold 13,500 people). Their latest album ‘Ballads Of A Bystander’, which dropped in late January of this year, recently topped the UK Record Store Chart and is just shy of 3m total streams on Spotify.

“Australia seems like a second home to us. The Australians just ‘get it’ and create the same level of carnage and chaos in the crowd that the fans back home bring. These shows are going to be special and we can’t wait to come back! All Reytons aren’t we?”

CHARLIE PITTMAN – ‘I Don’t Want To Be Here’ (Single)
With his first single release ‘I don’t wanna be here’, the Sydney-based alt-pop singer, songwriter and musician Charlie Pittman is ready to hit the ground running with new music and live shows.

‘I don’t wanna be here’ is a song packed with raw energy, emphatic guitar, and angst, serving as the first taste of Charlie’s forthcoming EP.  As a self-taught musician Charlie’s lyrics delve into the complexities of adulthood, showcasing a poignant blend of introspection and wit. His first single with Island Records Australia captures the emotional turbulence of life’s journey and offers a glimpse into Charlie’s authentic style.

Reflecting on his new single, Charlie says “This was the first song I wrote for the EP and marks a new sound for me. The song was written on an acoustic guitar in a bedroom in North London, we had the idea to make the chorus super stabby to add to the angst in the song. I also wanted the song to sound like it could be in an early 2000s coming-of-age movie.  i don’t wanna be here is song about navigating friendships in your 20s. It’s very easy to be friends with people when you see them every day but when everyone moves away from your hometown it can be difficult to keep in contact and I’m sure everyone can relate to being addicted to their phones yet still feeling too drained to reply to a message.  It’s an angsty indie-rock anthem for anyone wanting independence or change in their life.”  LISTEN WATCH

JUSTICE – ‘Saturnine’ (with Miguel) – (Single) ‘Hyperdrama’ – (Album out Friday 26th April)
With the release of their hotly anticipated album Hyperdrama quickly approaching, Justice have unveiled the massive new single ‘Saturnine (with Miguel)’ and share the album’s full track list and collaborator details ahead of its April 26th release via Ed Banger/Because Music.
“We don’t think we’ve ever made anything that sounds remotely like this track before,” state the band of the song’s epic scope.“It started with Gaspard playing around with an E-mu synthesiser guitar sound, and he found the main riff. The rest came very quickly. We love Miguel’s voice when it’s raw. We wanted him to sound outrageously frontal, with no space around his voice. We felt confident we could make this work with a single mono take of his voice, and minimal processing. It also suited the theme of the song, that’s this sort of fear and loathing in Las Vegas sweaty, hallucinatory flow. Feeling well in feeling bad.”
In conjunction with the new single release the band have announced the first batch of US headline dates for their impending global Justice which will officially debut with a topline slot at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The tour marks the band’s first major live performances since the conclusion of the Woman World Wide tour in 2018. Stream Single

JORDY BURNS – ‘Second Chances’ (Single) ‘Games’ (EP out April 18)
Eora/Sydney-based singer/multi-instrumentalist Jordy Burns has just announced her debut EP, ‘Games’ out on Thursday, April 18. Accompanying this announcement is her latest single off the record, ‘Second Chances’ – produced by Luke Clark and mixed by Gambino. ‘Second Chances’ unfolds with the graceful ascent of lush synths and a dynamic electronic rhythm, fashioning an ethereal and propelling arrangement. Jordy Burns’ vocals delicately fuse vulnerability and potency, soaring within the embracing warmth of the sonic atmosphere.

Jordy Burns talks about the inspiration behind ‘Second Chances’: “‘Second Chances’ fell out of my brain on a pretty poignant day in a toxic relationship when I finally realised that this person wasn’t going to change. After a really heated discussion, as many pained artists do, I found creativity in some intense journaling and suddenly I was staring at the lyrics of my next song.”

Accompanying the release is the candid music video, directed/produced by the artist herself and edited by Daniel Fethers, depicting the blossoming romance between two women who met at a light rail station. Joyful moments at arcades and tender exchanges illustrate the depth of their connection, intertwined with Jordy Burns’ soulful performances.

ELIZA & THE DELUSIONALS ‘Make It Feel Like The Garden’ (Single)
Indie rock juggernauts Eliza and the Delusionals – made up of Eliza Klatt (vocals), Kurt Skuse (guitar), and Ruby Lee (bass guitar) – are back with brand-new track ‘Make It Feel Like The Garden’ out today via Cooking Vinyl Australia.

LISTEN TO ‘MAKE IT FEEL LIKE THE GARDEN’ HERE

The highly-anticipated new single, featuring Eliza’s soaring vocals over a driving bassline and pulsating drumbeat, ushers in a new era for the trio. ‘Make It Feel Like The Garden’ is about escaping to a dream land, living through moments and memories that remind you of perfect places and feelings.

Eliza says of the single, “For me, this is one of my favourite songs that we’ve written. I actually think it’s one of my favourite songs in general. Like, if I heard it on the radio I’d be totally in love with it. We tried to encapsulate the feeling of looking for euphoria and the comfort of being in your happy place – in your own Garden and trying to navigate that emotion through life – with this song. It’s a feeling I think people often chase – whether it’s a happy memory or thinking about someone that you love. We want it to feel like the Garden all of the time, and we wanted this song to take you there.”
