JOHNNY CASINO – High Stone’ (ALBUM out Friday 3 May)
Australia’s internationally revered globe-trotting guitar slinger (and tattoo artist par excellence!), Johnny Casino has released a new single and video entitled “The Ghost Train” from his forthcoming Cheersquad Records & Tapes album High Stone. High Stone is out this Friday May 3 and is available for pre-save/pre-order now.

Formerly of Sydney’s beloved ’90s rock’n’rollers Asteroid B-612, Johnny Casino now calls Spain home and regularly plays across Europe and in the US. Indeed, his new album High Stone was recorded on a recent US sojourn, in Philadelphia, with members of the band St James and The Apostles. It was mixed in Spain by American Mike Mariconda, who has worked with other Australian legends the Cosmic Psychos and the Powder Monkeys as well as premiere punkers like the New Bomb Turks and Jack Oblivion and garage goddess Holly Golightly.
The new album, as usual, highlights Johnny’s huge guitar chops and fine singing & songwriting. It features a stronger keyboard presence than is usual for Johnny – a great ’60s organ sound – and on some songs an endearing and soulful ’60s garage-pop feel not unlike Memphis greats the Reigning Sound.

And now, to tell you more about his new recordings, he-e-e-r-e’s Johnny!

The city of Philadelphia has been good to your old pal Johnny Casino, in between the years of 1997 and 2001 I spent the best part of 3 years living there or being there for extended periods of time, and have returned many times since. I dig the gritty fighting spirit that I believe lives and breathes in Philly and it´s passionate people. The streets feel familiar to me and it feels like home, some of my favorite people live or once lived in Philadelphia, I love the city warts and all.

High Stone was recorded in Philadelphia…….twice!

This album started its life in Olde Richmond, Philadelphia, in early March of 2020, then……..well all kinds of ¨road blocks, detours, lost recordings, doubts and distances¨ tried to derail it until we finally finished it in October of 2023 (I recorded and released an album, a singles box set containing 5 singles and bonus tracks, and two other 45´s in between starting and finishing this album!?)

Johnny Casino’s new album High Stone is out May 3 and available to pre-order or pre-save now

SCOTT LAVENE with Hold Steady’s Craig Finn -Paper roses’ (Single)
Paper Roses”, the final single preview from Scott Lavene’s forthcoming album Disneyland In Dagenham is out now through Cheersquad Records & Tapes.

Scott Lavene was invited by The Hold Steady’s frontman Craig Finn to tour with him last year, which went down so well that they hit the road together once more in February. After a triumphant set at End Of The Road Festival, he then capped 2023 opening for The Hold Steady proper at the band’s legendary annual New York residency. Finn is among the many converted to Lavene’s work, and he appears on Disneyland In Dagenham opener ‘Paper Roses’.

Finn had Tweeted about his enjoyment of Lavene’s music while he was in the studio with Benjamin Woods. “I’m not very good at self-promotion but I was with someone who was. Benjamin was like, ‘Fucking tweet him back! Get him on the album! We went for a coffee and he asked me to go on tour with him, it’s a relationship of mutual admiration really. And what a bloody gift he’s given me – I’ve definitely stolen quite a lot of Hold Steady fans.”

Lavene offers that Paper Roses is, “a song about having a shit time in love. Wrote in five minutes in front of the tele at night. It was one and a half minutes long, a perfect opener. Tried to write more verses but seemed to take away the magic. Asked Craig Finn if he fancied adding some words and they were so good we extended the song to get him in it.”

Disneyland In Dagenham is a record that tumbles together the autobiographical and the imagined, the heart-breaking and the preposterous; the tale of that itinerant drug-dealing horse, for instance is also a genuinely touching allegory for the way friendships can slip through one’s fingers.

Scott Lavene – Paper Roses is out now in Australia via Cheersquad Records & Tapes

Scott Lavene “Disneyland In Dagenham” is out in Australia on May 10th through Cheersquad Records & Tapes, in plum red or traditional black vinyl for pre-order HERE

ABBEY LANE – ‘State Of Mind’ (Single)
Brimming with irresistible energy, Abbey Lane delivers a powerful dose of indie pop and rock with her new single ‘State of Mind’, ahead of her debut EP ‘Afterthoughts’ slated for release on Wednesday, June 12.

The Sydney-based indie artist has 12 years of musical experience guiding her, which has led her to collaborate with writers such as Sycco, Yung Bleu and Tenille Arts. Outside of the studio, Abbey Lane has also joined lineups alongside, Diesel, Hollie Col, Little Quirks, Little Green and most recently showcased at Sydney’s SXSW.

Taking on this new journey with multi-ARIA award-winning producer Dave Petrovic, Abbey Lane delivers ‘State Of Mind’, an emancipating track tied together with energetic guitar, soaring synths, rhythmic drums, heartfelt vocals and alluring lyricism. Like the most sincere unbottling of emotions to a close friend, this track is a dreamy, sun-kissed tune with a mosh-pit flair. With its uptempo beat and its emotional core, it manages to capture all the highs and lows of a relationship that has grown distant.

Through its emotive vocals, ‘State Of Mind’ follows the story of one-sided love and screams out in the pain that comes after the fallout. Abbey Lane says,

“State of Mind is a letter of all the things you never got to say to someone. It’s the story of falling in love with someone, and the pain of falling out of touch with them.” Stream ‘State Of Mind’

This truly versatile and nostalgia-inducing song would feel right at home playing from an iPod or playing at a festival, while writing journal entries or while rocking out with friends. Cry out and embrace a close friend with Abbey Lane’s ‘State of Mind’, and get ready for the release of her debut EP ‘Afterthoughts’ (out Wednesday, June 12).

This is a ‘breakout’ song about letting go of the past and embracing the future, whatever that may be. VETTA BORNE – ‘Want U Here’ (Single)
Following on from her massive hit ‘40-40’, Vetta Borne has shared latest track ‘Want U Here’, a self-professed yearning song about right person / wrong time, out today via [PIAS] Australia.

LISTEN TO ‘WANT U HERE’ HERE

Vetta Borne reflects, “At my big age, I’m very focused on reaching my goals. I’m very independent, even when in relationships. And I’m attracted to people who are the same. But of course, when you’re both busy focusing on your dreams, it can be hard to make time for each other.”

In exciting news for fans, Vetta has unveiled she has a brand-new EP on the way, Afterlife is due for release on Friday June 14 via [PIAS] Australia.

The five-track EP, written and produced entirely by Vetta Borne herself, ushers in a new era for the Melbourne producer, vocalist and lyricist. Sonically inspired from early 00’s pop club classics like Britney Spears’ ‘Gimme More’ and Nelly Furtado’s collaborations with Timberland, while reflecting on life’s lessons.

Vetta comments, “The EP overall is about leaning into your toxic phase and learning from it. The Afterlife EP is about learning a hard lesson; even when you’re at your best, doing your best, sometimes that isn’t enough for somebody else. In the process of writing this EP, I loved, I lost, I yearned, I started dating again, just to go through the process of finding love all over again.”

Also featured on the EP is thumping track ‘40-40’ which has garnered massive support upon release, including being spotlighted on HIT Network Nights with Nic Kelly as his Local List pick, landing a first play on triple j Drive, added to triple j and triple j Unearthed rotation, featured as Track of the Day on triple j Unearthed, and spotlighted on ABC News Breakfast TV.

Vetta Borne also recently announced that she has signed a global publishing deal with Concord Music Publishing ANZ. PRE-SAVE AFTERLIFE EP HERE

REECE YOUNG ‘Am I Wrong’ (Single/Video)
New UNFD signee and up ‘n’ comer Reece Young continues to roll out fiery new tracks that offer relatable lyrics and subject matter, crackling riffs, and nuanced electronics.
Now, Young shares the video for Am I Wrong. AM I WRONG

The song addresses a serious issue that affects so many people in this day and age, and it’s Young’s way of reaching out to listeners and fans and letting them know that he, too, has been there and gets it. The track, with its punchy guitars and layered choruses, is a lifeline and it resonates on many levels.
“Am I Wrong touches on the darkest topic I’ve written about yet,” the artist says. “Thoughts of suicide and depressive episodes have always plagued not only me, but a ton of people in my life. Am I Wrong questions if continuing on is worth it. Is wanting an ending a bad thing? Forgetting about the consequences of what would follow a reality like that is frightening. Hopefully, the listener hears these words and finds solace in the knowledge that they aren’t alone, and that other people out there struggle with the same thoughts.”

Am I Wrong follows the previously release tracks LOW and DARK.

New Jersey born and raised, Reece Young emerged and gained traction via his self-released early music. He lays it all out there has put all the adversity he’s faced, his personal struggles, his frustration, into a vulnerable and universally authentic sound. Young, now Nashville-based, is “one of us” — a music obsessive who has channeled his passion for the scene and his favorite artists into making his own and getting onto the stage himself. With a modus operandi of sharing tales of facing adversity, overcoming personal struggles, by tying open-vein vulnerability and authenticity to gargantuan choruses, the time is now for Reece Young to set about joining the big leagues and emulating what his heroes have done before him.

Watty Thompson announces the premiere screenings of Watty Thompson Live at Estonian House – The Film, captured in Naarm, Melbourne on the release of his acclaimed debut album in March of 2023.

During the making of his debut album, Aussie bush balladeer Watty Thompson had a dream. It was to bring country heart to the big city, a manifestation of the care and intent of his new musical project in the form of a community celebration, a musical event like no other.

Along with his talented friends in the Total Fire Band, a host of incredible like-minded musicians, the historic Estonian House (formally Western Theatre) in West Brunswick, Victoria was transformed into the Australian bush utopia that resounds throughout Thompson’s musical works. A gathering of close friends, both old and new came together under gathered gum branches to commune with the loving spirit of this old-time music done in a completely new way.

Produced by Wild Rose Pictures, Watty Thompson Live at Estonian House – The Film is a document of a halcyon moment for Watty Thompson and his Total Fire band as they bring to life the songs on an album that made so much impact on its release.  The songs are stirring, the energy is palpable, as a young man and his long-held vision that music has the power to change us all for the better plays out in an incredibly live performance full of love, joy and indeed at times deep felt sorrow.  With Graham (played by alt Country star Andy Golledge) along for the ride, watch an edifying moment in Australian music that will warm the heart and affirm the soul.

FULL FLOWER MOON BAND – ‘Devil’ (Single)
Ahead of their LP release and performances at The Great Escape, DotDotDot Festival, and Bearded Theory Festival (UK), Brisbane rockers Full Flower Moon Band release their latest hard-hitting, blues-twanged track Devil – out May 14

The full five-piece, triple-guitar line-up band headed by chief songwriter ‘Babyshakes’ Dillon have grown a cult following over the last two years of must-see live shows including at Splendour In The Grass, Yours & Owls, and a BIGSOUND 2023.

Following up from recent singles West Side and Illegal Things, Devil is a menacing and growling grandiose rock track described by Babyshakes herself as “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. My lover is a broken man, but to leave him for the small chance of meeting someone better seems like more trouble than it’s worth. My next lover could be the same or worse.”

POLISH CLUB – ‘Manila’ (Single/Video)
Polish Club today mark a new chapter in more ways than one, with the release of their single and video ‘Manila’ – followed quickly by a live show on Thursday 23 May at Sydney Spiegeltent. After leaving their major label, moving into self-management, getting married (both of them), and Novak courageously undergoing open heart surgery, it is time for Eora/Sydney’s favourite two-piece rock band to begin their era as an independent band.

The song was tracked, mixed and mastered at Marrickville’s Golden Retriever Studio by local legend Simon Berckelman, during sessions for a yet to be announced Polish Club record (more to come on that later!). Co-written by Robby De Sa (MAY-A, Vera Blue, Gretta Ray, Grent Perez), the track is a touch more dreamy and wistful than we’ve become accustomed to hearing from the usually brash rock and roll duo, yet it retains their signature relentless energy and emotive vocals. According to singer David Novak, it was a very conscious choice, “There’s a reservation in the vocal to ‘Manila’ that we haven’t really explored in our previous music. It feels like a more earned climax towards the end of the song, when you really take your time with building a crescendo in a song.”

With the Filipino half of Novak’s family being from Manila, and many still residing there, the sprawling metropolis has become a home away from home for him. As with many a familial home, the thought of Manila conjures up all manner of swelling emotions and memories. ‘Manila’ captures the stupor of that experience along with a persistent beat, dancing guitars and a soaring synth. The accompanying video was captured by Novak on camcorder during the last trip to his maternal homeland.

LISTENWATCH HERE | TICKETS

With no label or management, the freshly independent band are not only taking their music into their own hands, but their live show too. Polish Club are scheduled to hit the Sydney Spiegeltent for a very special one off show on Thursday 23 May, with tickets on sale now and moving fast! It’s a daunting but exciting proposition for Novak, “We’ve never released a single completely by ourselves, let alone a big live show, so we really feel like we’re almost a new band just starting off fresh.” Joining them on the night is a lineup that can stand on its own, with Canberran indie-pop act Sesame Girl, Eora/Sydney’s own Jet City Sports Club and Rat Public all set to grace the stage.

TWO TIMES SHY – ‘Losing My Mind’ (Single)
After their extraordinary run in 2023, Meanjin/Brisbane’s pop-punk powerhouse, Two Times Shy, are back exploring the path of self-destruction and heartache with their latest teeth-sinking single ‘Losing My Mind’, out now.

Since the release of their debut EP, ‘It Looks Better Than It Sounds’, the band has surpassed the significant milestone of 140k streams across streaming platforms, wrapped up their first interstate tour, and supported the likes of Late 90s, Bad Neighbour and more. The Brisbane-based outfit continues its string of heartbroken pop-punk singles and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Listen

With saturated pop-punk guitar riffs, emotive vocals and a boisterous energy right out of the gate, ‘Losing My Mind’ is an ever-evolving, meteoric track. Driven by 2000’s emo nostalgia, this belting single ‘Losing My Mind’ explores the ache one feels from the plethora of problems they face, all whilst dealing with the struggles of a relationship.  Frontman Douglas Hudswell speaks on the meaning behind the track:

“‘Losing My Mind’ was written about a scenario in which multiple things are contributing to you feeling like you’re going crazy. The relationship that you are in is causing you grief and the problems are exacerbated by your inability to deal with them and your self-destructive tendencies. This whole situation leads to you being fed up, wanting to break free of the situation and needing to do things your own way for a while.”

Two Times Shy and their matured musicality packs a polished punch and has fostered a well-loved sound with which all the heartbroken fans have grown acquainted. ‘Losing My Mind’ is no exception, detailing a relatable storyline that anyone who is driven insane by the overwhelming problems in their life can confide in.

RADICAL SON ‘Elder’ ReMix by Stereogamous (Single)
Renowned for his immersive melding of hip hop and soul alongside his dynamic vocal performances, Kamilaroi and Tongan artist Radical Son returns today, teaming up with Australian leading electro-pop wizard Stereogamous, aka Paul Mac, to conjure an unforgettable remix of Radical Son’s single Elder. Coated in a contemporary sheen, Elder (Stereogamous Remix) effortlessly heightens the commanding messaging of the original track, with the original also set to feature on Radical Son’s impending sophomore album Bilambiyal (The Learning) due out on Thursday July 11.

Expanding the potent narrative of its original, Elder (Stereogamous Remix) finds Radical Son, aka David Leha, mightily connecting with his cultural roots, while also calling on others to do the same. With unwaveringly sharp intensity and authenticity, Radical Son soars singing, “I wish to be an elder, an old man on this land”, surrounded in its new remixed form by trance-like beats, swirling electronic elements and fluctuating textures that take you from breathless to catharsis and back again. While certainly not Radical Son’s first foray into the world of remixes, with his singles Warrior, Black Baptism and Wicked all featuring remixes on his EP Soul Passenger, Elder (Stereogamous Remix) presents as a fluid continuation of Leha’s soul and hip hop-hued stylings, ultimately emerging as a powerful modern conduit for the track’s significant essence alongside the sleek input from Stereogamous. “I think remixes are a great way to get your music out,” Radical Son shares of the new remix. “I have a great deal of gratitude to my team and all those that are getting behind us and supporting what we do. I’m really looking forward to hearing the feedback from others. It’s such an honour knowing that remix may take it to new audiences. A great message to pass on.”

Teaming up with Stereogamous, aka the multi–ARIA Award-winning composer, songwriter, musician and producer Paul Mac, Radical Son’s brand new remix bridges Elder’s powerful narrative and core with modern hues that respectfully and positively translate into a contemporary setting. And, as Mac explains, the Stereogamous remix of Elder has already proved to be a resounding success in a live setting, shared and heightened by the power of dance. “Elder is a vital song that speaks to honouring those who have gone before us and a positive call for our place in emerging futures,” shares Mac. “As veterans of the LGBTIQA dance scene, we are grateful to see our dancefloor as a safe space for intergenerational community. We are thankful to have been given the opportunity to remix this powerful track with uplifting chords and earthy beats and to share it via dancing. You’re never too mature to belong on a dancefloor. We have road tested the Stereogamous remix throughout Mardi Gras season from Bondi views to sweaty basements and outdoor raves – and the response is always joyful.”

Elder’s original form is also set to shine on Radical Son’s upcoming new album Bilambiyal (The Learning), with the hotly anticipated full length set to further showcase Leha’s cultural connection, innate integrity and powerful perception across its 12 tracks. Releasing via Leha’s own label, Wantok Musik, and following on from his debut LP Cause ‘N Affect, Bilambiyal (The Learning) was also crafted alongside a powerhouse team, including Full Circle Audio, Marcus Longfoot, Andy Robinson, David Bridie, Frank Yamma and Emma Donovan and many more. Opening with the starkly intimate Elder Reprise, Bilambiyal (The Learning) from start to finish is a compelling and routinely beautiful experience, from Leha’s spellbinding delivery on the warm and driving How Long Must I Wait through to swirling bluesy soul (All My Life), ambient, meaningful ballads (Until You Call My Name), reggae tinges laced with hope (Only One Life) and gripping narratives from Leha’s Kamilaroi roots, particularly front and centre on the undeniably dynamic Yuluwirri Wandabaa, aka Rainbow Demon.

An album that is as stylistically diverse as it is captivating, the ultimate lustre driving Bilambiyal (The Learning) is Leha’s powerful devotion to his country and his soul, shown vividly on the stunning might of the original version of Elder, as well as the album’s own title track, with the latter offering an unforgettable emotive punch as Leha declares: “How many days should I go on, how many times must I do wrong, how many tears must I cry, ‘til I learn the meaning of life?”. And it’s ultimately Leha’s raw and ravishing soul-searching and nuanced calls to action layered throughout Bilambiyal (The Learning) that drives home the Radical Son core message: “Life’s a journey and we all have so much to learn. And my pet hate: people who think they know it all and those with no humility.”

Elder (Stereogamous Remix) is out today via Wantok Musik.

Bilambiyal (The Learning) is due out on Thursday July 11.

A divine, dark atmosphere is contrasted with the hyper-feminine imagery of the singer’s flowing pink dress and ribbons, making an ominous, intimate music video that unsettles the senses and perfectly compliments the coquette seduction tone of the song.

The creative team for the music video, Jemma Morley, Shannan O’Neill, Luke Wormald & Jayden Bate,  made sure to capture a video worthy of the fae. The fairy lights and natural filming environments make an alluring video that invokes a sense of timelessness and placelessness. Though the production had its difficulties, it came together seamlessly, LAVELIN says,

“Originally the music video was going to be on roller skates, however with the brutal summer rains and my apparent lack of coordination we ended up throwing those plans out the window and getting creative as a team on the spot to shoot the film.”

This creativity shines through in this moody, glowing music video that feels undeniably personal, and only builds anticipation to see what her upcoming EP has in store.

Get hooked on LAVELIN and her music video for ‘Addicted’ ahead of the release of her debut EP ‘Forget About Us’ (out Friday, May 24).

TYDE – ‘Latte Partay’ (Single/Video)
‘Latte Partay’ is a genre-bending, disco-pop gen-z anthem that isn’t afraid to dance in the face of adversity. Bringing the fun to a new form, TYDE has dropped a new music video to keep the partay going all night and day.

With its wicked laughter, cheerful horns, disco bass, and funky beat, ‘Latte Partay’ operates on a level of optimistic nihilism. This radical fusion of pop, rock, big band, and disco isn’t afraid to stare down the climate crisis, absurd cost of living, and generational wars, and stick out its tongue.

The playful lyrics offer a tongue-in-cheek response to so-called “first-world problems”, which the music video runs with. Frontwoman Ella Belfanti states: “The ‘Latte Partay’ music video is a collective-existential-spiral at a house party in the void about the cost of living crisis and climate change. Like the song, it laughs and dances through the struggles young people face, and celebrates community, caffeine and letting loose with your mates.”

The music video isn’t afraid to get goofy with it, offering a highly-saturated absurdist dance party, with a cake amp, flighted avocados, so many sunglasses, and coffee-cup choreography. These vivid visuals pair perfectly with the cheerful horns and truly funky riffs, conjuring up the vibes of a slumber party with best mates, making it what it is: playful, wacky, and truly unique.

Get groovy with TYDE’s new music video for ‘Latte Partay’, and then catch them bringing the funk on tour this May and June.

SOUTHERN RIVER BAND – ‘Vice City III; (Single/Video)
Exploding into view all over the world at the end of 2023 after being featured on every music lover’s favourite YouTube series ‘Justin Hawkins Rides Again’, the rest of the world is starting to see what Australia has known for quite some time – The Southern River Band are the real deal.

Hailing from Thornlie in Western Australia (Where? Exactly), SRB has spent years on the road and in the air, taking their full-throttle live show to anywhere with a stage and a bar, leaving thousands of fans grinning from ear to ear, night after night. From sold out national tours, playing with Aussie legends such as Cold Chisel & Rose Tattoo, through to supporting modern day rock icons like The Darkness and Eagles Of Death Metal, SRB never fail to raise their own bar.

With the release of their 6-minute epic Stan Qualen in September of last year, the band kicked into a whole ‘nother gear, charting in 23 countries worldwide and announced their first ever International Tour that sees them play 38 shows in Australia, The UK and Europe, gracing the stages of festivals such as The Great Escape, Vestrock, Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Werchter and Down The Rabbit Hole to name a few.   See UK/European dates below.

After freshly signing a deal with Cooking Vinyl Australia, the band – Cal Kramer, Dan Carroll, Pat Smith & Tyler ‘The Hawk’ Michie – are gearing up for by far their biggest year yet, with the release of their new single ‘Vice City III’ (out today) and a record to follow later in the year.

Of the label signing, Cal says “We are absolutely fucking stoked to be joining the legends at CVA, good people doing good shit, ya can’t ask for nothin’ more. We can’t wait to conquer the world with them, one song at a time!”    A sentiment that is equally shared by CVA.

To put it in layman’s terms – The Southern River Band never fail to deliver.

But hey, don’t take our word for it, find out for yourself!   Find ‘Vice City III’ streaming on all platforms HERE, and check out the accompanying video below.

JORDIE LANE – ‘The Changing Weather’ (Single) ‘Tropical Depression’ Album out August 23)
Melbourne born, Nashville based Indie Folk artist Jordie Lane has announced his first full length studio album in 6 years, with the news that he has signed a worldwide deal with ABC Music / The Orchard. The album, aptly named Tropical Depression, slated for release August 23, explores the curious converging of Lane’s own experience with severe weather and mental health battles.

Along with his trademark irreverent wit and social commentary, and a Grammy winning producing, mixing and mastering team, Jordie Lane offers a conceptually deep, yet deceptively light collection of Americana and Psych-Folk songs.

To celebrate inking his first ever record deal, Lane came up with the ridiculous plan to attempt signing the contract while simultaneously sledding down a ski slope during a Nashville winter storm. In what was once a rare but now increasing occurrence, the city all but shuts down with snow and ice covering the roads, and in this case it was the hills of the local golf course, where Jordie enlisted local artist GROUCHBUCKET (who has designed and illustrated all the artwork for Lane’s ‘Tropical Depression’), who put together a camera rig to film the festivities.

Check out Jordie Lane’s ridiculous ‘Signing and Sledding’ video below.

CANNON – ‘Comet’s Coming’ (Single)
Comet’s Coming, the titular second single from the forthcoming new album from reanimated Naarm, Melbourne rock trio Cannon is out now. The Comet’s Coming album is out on June 7th and now available for pre-order through Cheersquad Records & Tapes.

Cannon, featuring Mitchy McIvor, Dave Mudie and Adam Green, were ubiquitous on the Australian live circuit during the mid oughts peak of the “new rock” revolution. While their raucous single “Hell” from their debut Hardwood Hits EP, was resonating loudly on the national airwaves, they crossed the country with the likes of Jet, fellow locals Dallas Crane and internationals including Tenacious D and The Black Keys.

Pausing after this initial burst of activity in 2008, Cannon returned more than a decade later with their debut album Connexion in 2021. The album was a chance for a reunion of good friends and a re-exploration of the explosive chemistry that won the band initial acclaim in the mid-2000s. Their second album in quick succession Comet’s Coming, is a perceivably darker affair, with rawer tones sound tracking deeper themes and concepts, telling the trio still have plenty of fresh creativity to explore.

Title track “Comet’s Coming” with its staccato guitar figure and lurching overdriven bass features a pre-apocalyptic theme lifted from the novel “Voss” by British-born Australian fiction writer Patrick White. In the novel the central protagonist Voss, through his epical, troubled voyage across the Australian continent ultimately accepts his destiny. McIvor suggests, “it’s a fatalist song about the acceptance of mortality”.

Recorded in Fabian Hunter’s (Jade Imagine, Baby Blue) cramped, analogue gear laden Fishbone Tone Shack Studio, the trio recorded hot to tape, giving the new album takes a raw weightiness that is evident from the first listen.

Dave Mudie shares, “he’s (Hunter) got a lot of vintage gear and cool tricks, it’s a small space but it really suited us to get in there and play it live”.  With most of the songs still fresh from McIvor’s sketch book, the band captured these new compositions with little rehearsal, which Mudie adds translated well to the record, “they weren’t overcooked and were still exciting for us.”

The forthcoming album Comet’s Coming, now available for pre-order is a cohesive and powerful statement that flows effortlessly from track to track, having always threatened big things, now Cannon deliver them.
