2024 marks the 30th anniversary of ‘Dream It Down’ by Melbourne-based alt-pop visionaries, Underground Lovers. To celebrate, they’re releasing a 30th anniversary version today, April 5th.
‘Dream It Down’, originally released in July 1994, is the third album released by the Melbourne-based Underground Lovers. It arrived after an extensive tour of the US and the UK, and features the band’s biggest single ‘Losin’ It’.
Since it’s release, the album recording has grown in stature and respect to become the centrepiece of the band’s now ten-album body of work.
Buoyed by the familiarity and appeal of key singles – ‘Losin It’ and ‘Las Vegas’ – the album was named triple J’s album of the year in 1994. ‘Losin It’ reached #19 in the Hottest 100 of that year (arriving between Green Day’s ‘Longview’ and Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’).
To mark the 30th anniversary, the band have released the album on vinyl for the first time ever, including B-sides, and have released an expanded edition featuring tracks that’ve never been on streaming services before.
Speaking about the she record, frontmen Glenn Bennie and Vincenzo Giarrusso noted that; “Dream It Down is a significant album for us: it marked a change in direction musically for the band, and a change in the way we went about recording albums. Our philosophy was, and still is, that it should be all about the song.
“We engaged our electronic / art-rock heroes David Chesworth and Robert Goodge to help produce the record. It took the record to a whole new level”.
They also noted the importance, to them, of having the album on vinyl for the first time: “We are so excited to have it out in this format. It’s a classic album for us, and we think fans will really appreciate the care taken to produce it as a gatefold, double album.
“The original album fits nicely onto the first three sides of the release, and we’ve used the B-sides to the ‘Las Vegas’ CD single and the ‘Beautiful World’ CD single on Side Four of the album. These B-sides are a cool reference to 1993 and represent the band just prior to the vision of Dream it Down being fully formed, when we were trying to find our groove”.
In support of the ‘Dream It Down’ anniversary release, the band will also be going on tour through July & August:
