GALLERY: MISSY HIGGINS- ANITA’S, THIRROUL- GREAT SOUTHERN NIGHTS

Report and photos by Tania Graham-Brown

Missy Higgins took to the stage at Anita’s Theatre in Thirroul for a truly intimate and heartfelt evening; what a place to see her perform! It was a sit-down affair with a stunning backdrop that was worth the 1.5 hour drive from Sydney to get to. From the moment she greeted the crowd with a warm, unassuming “Hello,” it was clear this night would be about connection and storytelling.

First to hit the stage though was Olivia Coggin, with her style rooted in coastal folk, blending heartfelt singer-songwriter storytelling with warm, authentic melodies. Known for her soulful voice and honest lyrics, making her a rising artist in the Australian folk and indie scene, it was the perfect place for her to perform and really complimented Missy’s set that followed.

Missy’s set effortlessly wove together beloved classics from The Sound of White with fresh, emotionally charged tracks from her latest album The Second Act (2024). Songs like “Blue Velvet Dress” and “A Complicated Truth” showcased Higgins’ knack for raw vulnerability, while her rich, expressive vocals filled the beautifully refurbished venue with warmth and sincerity. Backed by a tight band and a stunning backing vocalist, the arrangements felt lush yet intimate, perfectly complementing her storytelling.

The crowd was hanging on every lyric and joining in a heartfelt singalong during fan favourite “Scar.” There was a genuine sense of shared experience throughout the night, making it clear why Missy Higgins remains one of Australia’s most beloved singer-songwriters. This was a special show — cozy, emotional, and utterly captivating. If you ever get the chance to catch her in a small venue like Anita’s, don’t miss it.
