Widely known as Perth’s folk ‘n’ roll darlings, Timothy Nelson & The Infidels are refusing to be pigeon-holed into specific genres and are now exploring their musical style within the pop world. Current single, All The People is the perfect example of this new direction – an upbeat, indie electro pop track with an instant hook and a catchy melody that’ll have you toe-tapping and singing along on first listen. The band are reaping the rewards of their hard work too. At the recent WAMi awards, they cleaned up, scooping 5 wins out of their 7 nominations, including Best Album, Best Pop Act, Best Keys /Synth Artist (Timothy Nelson), Best Male Vocalist (Timothy Nelson) and Best Guitarist (Luke Dux). The band will now be promoting their new goods with national tour dates including Old Bar (MEL) on November 14, Brighton Up Bar (SYD) on November 19 and Connections Nightclub (PER) on November 21. Main man Timothy Nelson took some time out to answer a few questions for Australian Musician.
What was your first gig?
The Northam Tavern with my first band The Cartridges. Peter Forgus (drummer for the Infidels) and I formed the band in high school and when we were sixteen we drove out to Northam to play our first show with our new buddies The Novocaines, who we’d found on MySpace.
What microphone do you use on stage generally?
Whatever mic is already there. On occasion, our sound guy will bring along a mic he likes for me to use, but generally I use what I’m given to work with.
Is it the same for recording?
Recording wise; I find myself singing into U87’s a lot, and for the louder parts, sometimes an SM7 will be used, or a decent dynamic mic.
What’s your latest recording and when will you be back in the studio?
We’ve just put our second album, Terror Terror, Hide It Hide It. We’re always in and out of various studios working on our different projects, but with the Infidels at the moment we’re just focusing on playing the album live and writing new songs to record at a later date.
What gigs have you been playing lately?
Lots of solo shows all over the place. Infidels just had a show at The Toff in Melbourne which was really great so we’re looking to coming back again on this tour.
Most memorable gig?
Our album launch at The Rosemount a few months back springs to mind. It was the first time we’d played the album in full on stage and we’d been rehearsing it for months. The place was packed and all in all, was just a great night.
Worst stage nightmare?
Probably tripping over one of the gazillion instruments we have on stage, that’s bound to happen at some point.
Album that changed your life?
Oh Inverted World by The Shins was a big one, I became obsessed with everything about it very quickly. It sounds like it was recorded in a cereal box and the lyrics are genius.
What gigs are coming up in the next few months?
We’re touring our new single All The People in November, playing at Brighton Up Bar in Sydney on the 19th, Revolver in Melbourne on the 20th and Connections Nightclub in Perth on the 21st for Lickmypalooza (Pride Fest).
A vocal tip for the kids?
Tom Jones says to drink lots of water, and sleep as much as possible. I hope to one day take this great advice myself.
