First impressions are important, especially for an artist presenting their debut album. We all remember hearing our favourite artist’s first record and the impact it had on us. As a singer songwriter, you want to touch people with your music. You put your heart and soul into a recording and hope that someone out there will get something out of it. In regard to Adelaide based singer, songwriter JESS DAY, we’d already heard a bunch of well received singles such as Rabbit Hole, Signals, and Affection, championed by some regular airplay on Triple J. Growing up, Jess took to music as an escape from the solitude of living in the remote mining town of Roxby Downs. Avril Lavigne, Pink and Hilary Duff got her through the day and inspired her to want achieve similar goals. As a teen, Jess learned the art of home recording and self-production to document her rockin’ musical notions. Today, all of that creative life experience, the determination, blood, sweat and tears can be found in the release of Jess Day’s debut album A Garden of Small Disappointments.
Jess took to social media this morning to express her thoughts.
“I can’t even begin to describe the relief of having this released. Self recorded and produced in the comfort ( discomfort) of my own bedroom – it’s a miracle I didn’t give up. A huge job. I dredged up and scratched at every old wound I had on this album, even when I felt I couldn’t bear to revisit some of these themes and memories.
Many heartbreaks, set backs, lessons, self discoveries were made in my twenties – and I feel I’ve documented a nice collection of them here. I may be dropping this into a void – it’s hard to know if it will reach anyone – but if these songs resonate with just one person and make them feel seen, I’ve succeeded. Fly my little album!! Be free. Thank you to the wizard – Jarred Nettle for mixing it, Max Tulysewski and Angus Lawrence for playing drums and Sione Teumohenga for the additional production on Bad News.”
Prior to the release of A Garden of Small Disappointments, Australian Musician editor caught up with Jess Day over a zoom call to chat about the journey leading up to the release of the album.

Along with later single ‘Signals’, Jess’ profile continued to rise, her catalogue surpassing 1 million Spotify streams, and enjoying a particular peak with the release of ‘Affection’, landing a Top 15 spot of the most airplay of Australian artists on national radio across the board
