“With love’s lost wing” Sony Music Australia presents Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet – framed by a LIVE choir and band coming to Melbourne this September

After more than ten years of sold-out shows in London, Sony Music Australia presents a captivating and electric production of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, framed by a live choir and band on The Astor Theatre stage.

Created by Backyard Cinema in the UK, the Australian debut is taking place from 23 to 28 September. This coincides with the 30th anniversary of the cult classic, with the film framed by stunning interpretations from the soundtrack that made history including ‘Young Hearts’, ‘Everybody’s Free’, ‘Kissing You’ and ‘When Doves Cry’.

Chair and CEO for Sony Music Australia and New Zealand Vanessa Picken said the 30th anniversary of Romeo + Juliet is the perfect moment to not just watch the film – but to truly feel the film in new light.

“The Astor Theatre is such an iconic Melbourne venue and will provide a majestic backdrop for the immersive performance – it will be an experience like no other,” Picken said.

“The show has done incredibly well in London for a long time. We’re really looking forward to adding a local slant with a well-known narrator to be announced soon.

“While tickets have only recently gone on sale, demand has led us to add three matinee performances early on.”

Founder and CEO of Backyard Cinema Dominic Davies said this production of Romeo + Juliet promises to be a captivating event.

“Audiences really feel like they’re stepping into Verona as we don the theatre for a multisensory experience,” Davies said.

“After sell-out performances in London, we are thrilled that Sony Music Australia is bringing this production ‘Down Under’ for the first time.”

After nearly a decade of reinventing what it means to watch a movie and having now screened to over half a million filmgoers, Romeo + Juliet is where film, theatre and music collide in dazzling harmony.

From devoted fans of the iconic film and passionate movie lovers to couples seeking the perfect date night, this unforgettable evening is for everyone. Revisit Baz Luhrmann’s dazzling adaptation – or experience it for the first time – and see one of the world’s most iconic love stories brought to life in a bold and breathtaking new way.

Romeo + Juliet presented by Sony Music Australia will be showing at The Astor Theatre Melbourne nightly from 23 to 28 September. Matinees have already been added for Wednesday and Friday in line with the high demand.
