Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips caught up with former New Order/Joy Division bass player Peter Hook over a zoom call to discuss the 2026 Australian ‘Get Ready’ album/Greatest Hits tour with Peter Hook & the Light, plus he doesn’t hold back when talking about his former band mates

Peter Hook’s Australian “Get Ready” Tour
Peter Hook discussed his upcoming Australian tour in July, where he will perform New Order’s “Get Ready” album in full, along with other New Order and Joy Division songs. He revealed that the album, which was originally produced mainly by Bernard Sumner and himself, has surprised him with its success in live performances, particularly two tracks he initially disliked. Peter noted that since splitting from New Order in 2007, his band The Light has played over 1,000 gigs, and while they typically don’t have much downtime, this tour will be one of their longest breaks due to Peter’s shoulder injury recovery.
Peter Hook Discusses “Get Ready
Peter Hook chatted about his recent concert experience at Hyde Park, where he unexpectedly sat next to Bobby Gillespie and mentioned the possibility of Gillespie collaborating on the “Get Ready” tour. He expressed mixed feelings about having guest artists on the album, initially opposing the idea but later accepting it due to personal connections with the guests. Greg inquired about the guests on “Get Ready,” and Peter Hook explained that the record company suggested them as part of a comeback strategy, though he initially felt it detracted from the band’s identity. He described “Get Ready” as a more enjoyable album compared to “Republic,” highlighting the collaborative writing process between him and Bernard Sumner. However, he noted that Bernard had promised more gigs, which did not materialise, leading to disappointment.
New Order Trademark Settlement Frustration
Peter Hook was blatantly honest about his negative experiences with a legal dispute over the New Order trademark, which he described as being “sucked into” and feeling “suckered” by the situation. He expressed frustration that the settlement only resulted in him receiving 2p in the pound for the use of the trademark, while the other party received 98.75p, and he felt the process was unfair and unresolved despite achieving a settlement.
Joy Division and New Order Reflections
Peter Hook talks about his experiences with Joy Division and New Order, highlighting the challenges and conflicts within the bands. He emphasised the importance of having a plan in place when things go wrong, comparing it to a prenup for bands. Peter also reflected on the legacy of Joy Division, particularly the song “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” and expressed sadness over the breakdown of relationships within the band. He concluded by expressing his admiration for the musical balance and harmony of Joy Division, in contrast to the difficulties he experienced with New Order.
