Australian blues and southern rock artist Bill Barber sat down with Australian Musician to discuss his band Bill Barber and The Holding Cell and their new album, Southern Redemption. The conversation traced the band’s musical evolution, creative process, and deep camaraderie that fuels their sound.

After wrapping up his previous project The Revelators, Barber formed The Holding Cell with Sean Klinger (lead guitar), Tommy Brown (drums), and Jasper Austin Gray (bass). The group’s sound has shifted from blues rock toward a southern rock direction reminiscent of The Allman Brothers or Marcus King, though Barber says blues remains “50 to 60 percent” of their musical DNA. He describes southern rock as “what happens when a blues guy tries to write country songs.”
The band’s journey included a standout moment representing Australia at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, where they reached the semifinals and recorded their debut album at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a formative experience that shaped their southern sound. Southern Redemption, recorded entirely to tape, reflects a bolder songwriting focus, with an eclectic mix of moods and styles rather than a single genre.
Barber spoke warmly about his bandmates, emphasizing the creative chemistry between himself and guitarist Sean Klinger, whose tonal expertise and harmony work elevate their live shows. Their twin guitar interplay is a defining feature of the band’s sound, though Barber joked that rehearsing intricate harmonized parts can drive him mad until they “finally make sense” together.
The interview also delved into Barber’s personal connection to his instruments, particularly his beloved Gibson 335, which was stolen and later miraculously recovered after six months. During that time, Klinger’s generosity shone when he gifted Barber one of his prized Telecasters, a gesture Barber called “massive” and deeply meaningful. He describes The Holding Cell as “a brotherhood” where honesty, support, and shared life experiences translate directly into their emotionally charged music.
Looking ahead, the band will perform at Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival (November 9), before embarking on a larger tour and beginning work on new material in early 2026. Barber admits he’s already eager to write again, saying the band thrives on creative momentum.
