Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith is set to return to Australia and New Zealand this April, presented by David Roy Williams, bringing his latest album Hangover Terrace to local stages as part of an extensive tour. Speaking with Australian Musician’s Greg Phillips, Sexsmith shared his enthusiasm for the new material and the joy of reconnecting with audiences in a region that has long embraced his melodic, song-first approach.

The Hangover Terrace shows will feature a substantial portion of the new record, with Sexsmith revealing that he’s currently performing eight to nine songs from the album each night. Written largely in the reflective aftermath of the pandemic, the album balances emotional openness with musical warmth, and Sexsmith says the songs have translated surprisingly well to a stripped-back live format. Standout tracks like “Cigarette Cocktail” and “Damn Well Please” have already emerged as audience favourites, the latter evolving into an unexpected singalong.
Joining Sexsmith on the tour is his long-standing trio: drummer Don Kerr, a collaborator since 1987, and bassist Jason Mercer, who has worked with Sexsmith on and off since the mid-1990s. While the album features rich arrangements and keyboards, the live performances lean into simplicity, allowing the songwriting to take centre stage. Sexsmith believes the new material has reinvigorated his back catalogue, giving familiar songs fresh energy alongside the latest compositions.
Reflecting on his career, Sexsmith spoke candidly about his admiration for classic songwriter-led performances, citing heroes like Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, and Bob Dylan as influences on his understated stage presence. Rather than spectacle, his shows focus on connection, the shared space between band and audience, whether in historic halls or intimate club rooms.
Sexsmith also discussed the creative process behind Hangover Terrace, highlighting the importance of album sequencing, extended musical introductions, and the willingness to let songs evolve organically in the studio. Several tracks underwent major transformations from demo to final recording, reinforcing his belief in staying open to collaboration and spontaneity.
Australia holds a special place in Sexsmith’s journey. First touring the country in 1996 following a pivotal boost from Elvis Costello, he recalls being warmly received from the outset, a feeling that has never faded. He credits Australian and New Zealand audiences, much like those in the UK and Ireland, with a deep appreciation for melodic songwriting and album-driven artistry.
As he prepares to return in April, Sexsmith says he’s most proud not of any single achievement, but of longevity, of continuing to write, record, and perform songs he genuinely believes in.
