The Romantics frontman Wally Palmar says the band is eager to reconnect with Australian audiences when they return this March for appearances at the Wanstock Festival, including shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
In conversation with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, The Romantics’ Wally Palmar reflected on the group’s long history with Australia, noting their first extensive visit in 1980, when they toured theatres and clubs at the height of their early success. While the band briefly returned for a cruise-based event in 2018, this upcoming trip marks their first opportunity in years to properly spend time onshore and reconnect with fans at the Wanstock Festival in Sydney and Melbourne in March.

Palmar said the band is particularly excited to escape the Detroit winter and perform in the Australian summer, describing the visit as something the group has wanted to do for a long time. He also recalled how Australian TV show Countdown played a key role in boosting the band’s popularity locally, helping propel “What I Like About You” up the charts during their initial breakthrough.
The current touring lineup blends long-time collaborators and newer members, with Palmar highlighting the return of guitarist Coz Canler alongside bassist Bruce Witkin, guitarist Joey Malone, and drummer Mike Rizzi. He emphasised the strong musical chemistry and experience within the group, saying the band is in great form heading into the tour.
Looking ahead, Palmar expects the shows to be high-energy celebrations of the band’s enduring catalogue, driven by the longevity of hits such as “What I Like About You” and “Talking in Your Sleep.” He described the opportunity to still perform these songs decades later as a point of pride, crediting the loyalty of fans for the band’s continued momentum.
The Romantics are thrilled to be coming back, ready to enjoy the cities, the weather, and most importantly, the chance to play for Australian audiences again.
