In his chat with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, Eric Weideman discussed his band 1927’s upcoming headline appearance at the Wanstock Festival at the Shoppingtown Hotel on Friday March 20, expressing genuine enthusiasm about both the event and the band’s current form.

Weideman described the present five-piece lineup, featuring keyboards, lead guitar, bass, drums and himself as the strongest version of 1927 he has ever played with. He said the songs are finally sounding the way he always imagined, which has reinvigorated his enjoyment of performing. That renewed energy will be front and centre at Wanstock, particularly in a multi-artist setting he enjoys for the camaraderie, noting that sharing the bill with bands like Dragon adds to the experience.
When it comes to the setlist, fans can expect the key hits from the band’s breakthrough album …Ish, including “That’s When I Think of You” and “If I Could.” Weideman made it clear that 1927 understand what audiences come to hear and prioritise those signature songs. However, the band will also include newer material from later releases such as Generation i and the 2019 EP Paper Aeroplane, blending nostalgia with more recent work.
Reflecting on the band’s history, Weideman spoke candidly about the whirlwind success of their early years and how different it feels now. Whereas the late ’80s brought intense pressure and little opportunity to connect personally with fans, today he finds the experience far more relaxed and rewarding. He still feels pre-show nerves, but approaches performances with a calmer, more grounded mindset.
Songwriting remains a slow, deeply personal process for him. He admitted he is not prolific and can spend months refining a song, often second-guessing himself. Nevertheless, he continues to write and record in his home studio, driven by authenticity rather than commercial output. Weideman said he is most looking forward to interacting with the audience at Wanstock, delivering the songs as well as possible and seeing smiles on faces.
