Naarm/Melbourne’s The Smith & Western Jury return with “Lucky Stars,” a powerful new single that trades in their trademark grit for something more intimate, without losing an ounce of intensity.
Known for a sound that hits like a freight train—loud, fast, and impossible to ignore—the band have built a reputation on high-impact, rock-driven songwriting laced with a western edge.
Of the new song Sam Lombardi says: “Lucky Stars” is a song about fear, uncertainty, and feeling lost inside your own body. It was written during a time when everything felt like it was unravelling — following multiple health diagnoses, rapid weight loss, and the shock of discovering I’d had a stroke.
What made it even harder was how quickly it all happened, and how little space there was to process any of it. Appointments felt rushed and clinical — life-changing information delivered in minutes, often in a way that felt dismissive and detached from the reality of what I was facing. I’d leave with prescriptions, pamphlets, and warnings that raised more questions than answers.
It often felt like I was left alone to carry the weight of something I didn’t fully understand.
“Lucky Stars” captures that tension between being told to just keep going and quietly grappling with fear, confusion, and the unknown — searching for something steady to hold onto when nothing feels certain.
The Smith & Western Jury’s 2024 debut Hotel Texas announced their arrival in no uncertain terms, earning ABC Country’s Feature Album of the Week and national airplay across Saturday Night Country, Edge of Country, and Tower of Song on Double J, while cinematic visuals for the title track and “Button That Collar” found a home on CMT Australia.
With “Lucky Stars,” the band step into darker territory. Written during a period of sudden personal upheaval, the track leans into uncertainty, disconnection, and the unsettling experience of confronting life-altering realities before there’s time to fully process them. There’s a quiet tension at its core—reflecting moments where the world shifts without warning, and the answers come too quickly, often in ways that feel distant or detached.
The single offers a first glimpse into the band’s forthcoming second album, recorded in October 2025 with acclaimed producer Jordan Koop (Orville Peck, PONY). Pushing further into dynamic contrasts and sharper songwriting, the new material signals a band unafraid to evolve—digging deeper while hitting just as hard.
Having built their name on stages from Out On The Weekend and Queenscliff to Tamworth and Meatstock—and alongside artists like Ella Hooper, Luca Brasi, and Henry Wagons—The Smith & Western Jury continue to carve out a space that’s entirely their own.
