Written during a pivotal creative retreat in Yallingup, Western Australia, ‘HEARTLESS’ captures a moment of raw inspiration and clarity for the band. What began as a last-day idea on a week-long writing trip quickly became one of the project’s standout tracks.
“We went down south and recorded this one at our mate’s massive property. This was our first session where we officially started the album,” shares frontman Zaya. “It’s a real heartbreak story about a past relationship. It’s about heartbreak, but it’s uplifting at the same time – it flips that feeling so people can feel a bit better about themselves.”
Bandmate Nath adds: “We started this tune on the last day of that writing trip. We had three hours left and just ran with an idea. It was pretty much started and finished within that time. It had an instant impact – it’s quite a heartfelt song.”
True to its name, ‘HEARTLESS’ explores the emotional weight of drifting away from someone you once loved, balancing heartbreak and accountability with catharsis. It transforms pain into something expansive and healing, a sentiment the band holds close. Sonically, the single marks another step in South Summit’s evolution. Known for their genre-fluid approach, the band lean into dance and house-inspired melodies while retaining their signature storytelling and warmth.
For the band, the single is a defining moment in the album rollout. “We’re in the guts of the RUN IT BACK campaign and this is the perfect song to show everyone what the album’s all about. For a lot of us, ‘HEARTLESS’ is our favourite track, we’re super keen for the Summit family to hear this one.”
The accompanying video was filmed atop Western Australia’s iconic Bluff Knoll, adding a striking visual layer to the song’s emotional intensity. The band comment on the video, “For the Heartless video, we were up at 1am starting the four-hour hike up Bluff Knoll with just a tiny crew – literally just our videographer and a drone operator. By the time we got to the top we were already cooked, but we just kept running takes over and over on the mountain. We were completely exhausted, but it looked exactly how we pictured it, so it was 100% worth it.”

The release follows a wave of momentum for South Summit, including a 15-date UK and European tour supporting The Terrys, and the announcement of their biggest Australian headline shows to date. The band have also confirmed a New Zealand run across Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, alongside a 17-date UK and European album tour this September and October.
Early releases from RUN IT BACK have already made a significant impact, with latest single ‘ON THE DASH’ surging into the Top 5 most played tracks on triple j, earning full rotation and a first play on triple j Breakfast. Previous singles ‘TOP OF THE HILL’ and ‘WE ARE’ have also received strong national airplay, Top 50 chart placements, and widespread DSP traction.
Alongside radio success, South Summit continue to build an impressive media footprint, with support from Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Esquire Australia, Scenestr, 10 Magazine, Triple M Homegrown and HIT Hot Hits, further cementing their position as one of Australia’s most exciting and fast-rising acts.
With ‘HEARTLESS’, South Summit deliver a soaring, emotionally resonant anthem that underscores their evolution, and sets the stage for what’s shaping up to be a defining moment in their evolution.
