Fifteen years after the release of their acclaimed debut album Forever So, Melbourne indie-folk outfit Husky are returning to the intimate venues where their remarkable journey first began, celebrating the record that launched them onto the national and international stage.
Released in 2011, Forever So introduced audiences to the rich harmonies, thoughtful songwriting and understated beauty that would become Husky’s trademark. Recorded while the band was based in a modest Northcote bungalow, the album quickly captured the attention of listeners across Australia after Triple J Unearthed championed the band. Their breakthrough single History’s Door became one of the standout tracks of the year, earning a place in Triple J’s Hottest 100 and establishing Husky as one of Australia’s most promising new acts. Strong support from community radio around the country further fuelled the band’s rapid rise.
The success of Forever So soon reached beyond Australian shores. Husky became the first Australian band to sign with legendary Seattle independent label Sub Pop, home to artists including Nirvana, Fleet Foxes, The Shins and Father John Misty. The signing positioned the group at the forefront of the global indie-folk movement alongside acts such as Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons, opening the door to extensive international touring throughout North America and Europe.
Critical acclaim followed. Husky won the prestigious Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, received the APRA Professional Development Award, earned ARIA Award nominations and toured nationally with Neil Young, performing before thousands of Australian fans. The band would go on to release four further albums, including Ruckers Hill, Punchbuzz and Morning Believer, continually evolving their sound while maintaining the lyrical depth and melodic warmth that first won audiences over. Frontman Husky Gawenda has also built an impressive solo catalogue, releasing three acclaimed solo albums and establishing himself as one of Australia’s most respected singer-songwriters.
Now, to mark the 15th anniversary of Forever So, Husky are revisiting the rooms that helped launch their career. The special run of intimate performances will see the band perform the album in its entirety for the first time in years, alongside a selection of fan favourites spanning their catalogue. For long-time followers, the shows promise a nostalgic return to the songs that defined an era of Australian indie folk, while newer audiences will have the chance to experience the album’s timeless songwriting in the setting it was always intended for.
