An outstanding evening of Australian songwriting and performance was experienced last night by a full house at Memo Music Hall in St.Kilda, who had come to see Don Walker as part of his Love Songs album tour. Support act, Jimmy Dowling set the tone with his understated charm, poetic storytelling and wonderfully offbeat musical style, warming the room with songs that reward a careful listen.

Then the iconic Australian master storyteller Don Walker delivered the kind of show that reminds you why he is one of this country’s great songwriters. With his unmistakable touch for melody and lyrics that capture the grit, tenderness and complexity of life, Walker let the songs (aided by his wonderful band) do the talking. Intimate, unpretentious and full of character, it was a night that celebrated the craft of songwriting rather than the spectacle. Backed by an incredible group of musicians consisting of Hamish Stuart, Michael Vidale, Garrett Costigan, Shannon Bourne (Suave Fucks indeed!) and the 3 piece sweet voices of The Harmonettes— Amanda Roff, Erica Dunn, Brigitte Hart, the night was real treat for anyone who loves great Australian music.
