Kew Court House is lighting up Melbourne’s cultural calendar this winter with a live series of events spanning literature, music and performance. The historic 80-seat theatre in the eastern suburbs will feature an eclectic mix of genres performed by acclaimed artists and emerging talent, with some genre-defying collaborations. The program promises intimate and unforgettable experiences in one of the city’s most unique venues.
Brandishing their unique, fiery brand of Soul, Latin, Jazz and Blues music, Melbourne instrumental band The Winfield Road Experiment will have you feeling the heat one moment before melting your heart the next.
The Winfield Road Experiment is an eclectic and diverse group of musicians that has grown into a must-see act within the Melbourne music scene.
Expect to hear highly energetic and jam-packed instrumental music featuring catchy melodies, infectious rhythms, flamboyant percussion, thunderous horn lines, virtuosic flute and wailing solos. The Winfield Road Experiment does it all.
Since their formation in 2020, The Winfield Road Experiment has gigged extensively around Melbourne and regional Victoria. Highlights include their 2022 debut Album launch at Bar 303, their 2023 sophomore album launch at The Curtin, festival performances in Mt Gambier, Castlemaine, Shepparton, Eltham, Newport and Foster, two sold out shows at the Mildura Arts Centre and countless gigs in classic Melbourne venues.
Fresh off the release of 3 new singles in 2025, featuring both Sean Hutton and Shannen Wick, The Winfield Road Experiment show no signs of slowing down in 2026.
The Winfield Road Experiment’s Jake Underwood took some time to ponder a dozen questions for us
Tell us about the name of the band
The band was initially formed in a big sharehouse on Winfield Road, Balwyn North, during the first Covid lockdown. It was just an ‘experiment’, a bit of fun to record some songs during the lockdown. I guess it turned into something bigger!
How did the band members come together initially?
As in the first question. The core members formed as a ‘sharehouse’ band. Slowly but surely, we added other members from outside of the house, and it eventually evolved to a really unique group of musicians from all different walks of life.
Are there artists that everyone in the band are collectively into, or do you have diverse influences?
Very diverse influences. A lot of us are very jazz based, but the rest delve more into soul, blues and rock music.
First concert you ever attended?
AC/DC when I was 14 in 2009. – Jake
Which other person has had the biggest influence on your music career?
Mario Lattuada from Box Hill Institute. By far the greatest influence on my taste of music, work ethic and inspiration to push myself. We have been exceptionally lucky to have him involved in the band’s first two albums and several live shows.
Where is the band at with recording? Anything on the horizon?
We are in the mixing stage of our third album. Aiming to have it released in spring!
Describe the Kew Court House series and what we can expect from your June 18 appearance
A very diverse and eclectic mix of Soul, Latin and Jazz instrumentals.
We are bringing a great band for this one. Yael Zamir is on the flute, and Rob Simone is back on the sax after more than a year of being too busy doing theatre shows! We can’t wait!
What would you like your music career to look like in 5 years?
Honestly, we love the freedom of having such a beautiful and creative outlet to perform and release music. We all just hope that the band continues to grow and it can become our full-time jobs!
What would you consider to be the favourite gig you have played so far?
We have played so many great shows. But for me, the launch of our second album ‘Soulsa Verde’ in December 2023 was so memorable for so many reasons. Perhaps most touching was that it was our final show with Mario Lattauda before he left for sunnier pastures in QLD.
If money were no issue, what would a WINFIELD ROAD EXPERIMENT concert look like?
We have a pretty big band as it is (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys, Percussion, Flute and Sax). So perhaps with endless money, we could go more extravagant on the visual side of things. Otherwise, we are proud to have all of the members we could ever need.
An important life lesson someone gave/told you?
To make music that you want to hear, not what you think others want to hear.
What’s happening for the rest of 2026?
We have had a really good start to 2026, and we think it will only continue to improve. With the release of our third album, ‘No Dice’, we hope to play at some festivals in the Spring and Summer months.
