BLACK FLAG has turned a new page and begun a bold new chapter with the addition of three new members: Max Zanelly (vocals), David Rodriguez (bass), and Bryce Weston (drums), joining founding guitarist Greg Ginn.
With a fresh lineup and renewed creative energy, BLACK FLAG is gearing up for exciting live shows and new music production. The group has already begun writing and rehearsing together, building on their signature sound while embracing new influences brought in by the latest members.
BLACK FLAG’s upcoming performances will showcase the chemistry and talent of the revitalized lineup, giving fans a first taste of the new era.
Black Flag are one of California’s most influential and uncompromising punk bands, central to shaping the American hardcore movement. Formed in Hermosa Beach in 1976 by guitarist and songwriter Greg Ginn, the band became known for its blistering speed, DIY ethics, and confrontational live shows. After early vocalist Keith Morris departed to form the Circle Jerks, Black Flag cycled through singers before settling on Henry Rollins in 1981, whose intense stage presence helped define their most iconic era.
Throughout the early ’80s, the band toured relentlessly, often operating outside traditional venues, and released landmark records such as Damaged (1981), My War (1984) and Slip It In (1984). Their sound evolved from straight-ahead hardcore into slower, heavier, more experimental territory, incorporating elements of metal, free jazz and noise.
Black Flag were also pioneers of the American independent music infrastructure through Ginn’s label SST Records, which supported countless underground bands. Internal tensions, legal battles with former label Unicorn, and Ginn’s demanding work ethic eventually led to burnout, and the band split in 1986. Despite intermittent reunions under various lineups since 2003, Black Flag’s original run remains legendary for its raw intensity, innovation, and foundational impact on punk culture.
