Last night on the steps of the Sydney Opera House felt quietly significant.
Boy & Bear returned to one of the city’s most iconic stages under the open sky, playing to a crowd that gathered early and stayed present. With support acts Darcie Haven and Hollow Coves setting the tone, the evening unfolded with warmth and ease, layered harmonies, familiar melodies, and songs that sat naturally against the harbour backdrop.
Darcie Haven opened with an intimacy that carried across the steps, her voice clear and unforced. Hollow Coves followed in a way that felt relaxed and familiar, their set unfolding without urgency, soundtracking the space as people settled in and the night took shape.
There was an unspoken weight in the air too. As the show went on, news was spreading of the attack in Bondi just ten kilometres away. It’s the kind of moment people will forever remember where they were when they heard what was unfolding. It wasn’t referenced on stage, but it didn’t need to be. What emerged instead was a quiet sense of togetherness, strangers standing shoulder to shoulder, choosing presence over distraction. In moments like that, the music does more than entertain, it becomes a quiet anchor.
When Boy & Bear stepped on, they moved confidently through their catalogue, leaning into songs that have long carried them, sitting comfortably with tunes off their newly released record Tripping Over Time. Classic Boy & Bear tracks like Harlequin Dream and Southern Sun rippled out over the forecourt, voices lifting across the steps on choruses that felt instinctive rather than rehearsed. Where Does Life Begin, Roses and Vertigo showed their direction forward, while the Fall at Your Feet/Heart of Gold medley is a highlight of any Boy & Bear show.
Walking away, it felt like stepping out of a shared moment. A reminder that even when the world feels fragile, there is power in gathering, listening, and holding space together.
