If The Ramones weren’t so straight ahead rock, didn’t have such an affinity for black leather and were raised in Brisbane rather than New York, then perhaps we’d call them Custard. It’s a stretch of a theory I know but Australia’s fave popsters Custard do cook a mean two or three minute catchy pop song and churn them out consistently, album after album. They’re one of those bands that have just always been around (apart from that small 16 year glitch when they weren’t of course)!
Lately, singer Dave McCormack has had that voice of Bluey thing goin’ on, which he needed to put aside for a minute as the rest of the band were beckoned to put their day job tools down and gather at Custard HQ to lay down some new choons.
As a result, today they release ‘Suburban Curtains’, yet another quality pop/rock album from the band and to celebrate, they’re hitting the road along with support buddies The Fauves and The Stress of Leisure.
They’d already offered us two fab singles from the album, ‘Molecules Colliding’ and ‘Someday’ (featuring Canadian singer-songwriter Serena Ryder), a great taste of what was to come. And now it’s here, a 21 track double album in old speak. In fact there actually is a double vinyl version of this fine product. It’s so fresh, it was recorded in merely days.
Prior to the release of Suburban Curtains, Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips spoke with Custard bass player Paul Medew about the making of their brand new opus.

Featuring a small bounty of collaborators – Michael Lira (Darth Vegas), Serena Ryder, Maureen Hansen, Charlie Bedford and Lucy McLure – recorded with Chris Townend at MONA’s Frying Pan studio in Hobart, mixed by Glenn at the beach… feel the joy, season, and sun of it all.
GLENN notes: “I was at work researching art museum / human digital interfaces when I stumbled upon the new recording studio at MONA with an old EMI/Abbey Road desk plus a Studer 8 track tape deck. I emailed them immediately. A short while later we got together at my place at Culburra Beach and bashed out 21 songs. We wrote down the chords on sheets of A4 paper and recorded a version of each tune on an iPhone. We put a PDF of the chord sheets and the recordings up on DropBox so we could study at our leisure. A month later we flew to Hobart and recorded all the songs in two days. 8 tracks straight to tape. Then we did what we normally do; we took our songs back to our respective home studios and recorded our vocals and other overdubs. I mixed it in my granny flat and sent it off to be mastered. Then I went back to work.”
