Last night at the Enmore Theatre, Pamela (indie pop duo of Sarah Ellen & Josh Kempen) set the tone with a shimmering, nostalgic indie-pop set that had the early crowd swaying from the first track. Their 60s-inspired melodies and effortless harmonies gave the room a warm glow, making it the perfect prelude to the haze of Dope Lemon (the moniker of acclaimed Australian artist Angus Stone ) to come. Pamela are currently in studio working on their highly anticipated debut EP with the likes of Grammy nominated producer Justin Stanley, Tele, Robby De Sa, and Dennis Neuer.
When Angus Stone and his band took the stage, the atmosphere shifted instantly. Bathed in deep reds and blues, with dreamy visuals swirling behind them, Dope Lemon rolled through a set stacked with fan favourites like Marinade, Salt & Pepper, and Coyote, blending them seamlessly with newer tracks from the recently released Golden Wolf album. The live versions carried extra grit – extended guitar jams and heavy grooves that pulled everyone into a laid-back trance. Guitar solos, harmonica riffs, dancers with animal heads – they had it all.
By the time the encore hit with Home Soon and Uptown Folks, the entire theatre was singing, moving, and completely lost in their blissful melodies. It was the kind of show where time slips away, and you leave feeling like you’ve been somewhere else entirely – Dope Lemon magic.
